>Kaija Saariaho - Chamber Music Wow, I had no expectations going into this, but I was floored. It’s modern classical alright, but definitely leaning toward the stranger side. It was cool to hear compositions centered around a flute, and the first two compositions, utilizing sinister whispered vocals, really was uniquely terrifying and awe-inspiring. Also, most pieces on here featured an interestingly organic-sounding implementation of electronic effects.
Speaking of the flute, I haven’t ever heard it played quite like this. The juxtaposition of sweet melodies, haunting drones, and harsh overblowing really surprised me. Around the 5 min mark in the song Laconism de l’Aile is a perfect example of this. Until now, I’d only ever heard woodwinds used to support the more popular violins, or in a more structured manner. The only other time I’d been so impressed with flute playing was on Eric Dolphy’s Other Aspects.
The last quarter of the album switches styles a bit, diving off the deep end of weirdness. If the first three quarters were odd and ominous, this last part is terrifying and bizarre. Most of this part has a strange tribal ambient vibe to it, but still is identifiably composed by this Kaija Saariaho person. That’s to say, it has the same style as the rest, especially in its organic style of electronic effects and tape manipulation.
Sorry for the unusually long review, but I really enjoyed this.

>Steve Reich - Radio Rewrite Apparently inspired by Radiohead songs, but I don't really see the connection. I mean, there's a guitar in there a few times? Anyways, decent stuff here, but not much new for Reich. This gives me somewhat similar vibes as Memoryhouse, where it feels a little forced. Another odd thing about this was that every once in a while Reich will introduce a new idea into the song so suddenly that I had to check to see if anything else accidentally started playing in the background. I've heard this kind of thing done before, but the execution here is really the oddest thing. Either way, overall pleasant enough listen, but nothing really grabbed me.>6/10 >Charlotte Moorman - Cello Anthology Also, I've been listening to Charlotte Moorman Cello Anthology on and off for a bit. I really want to like it more. I'm a huge fan of Polly Bradfield, and Moorman does similar stuff on a bunch of songs here. The problem is, with Bradfield, you can savor all the little minute inflections of the violin, and really appreciate all the little details. Whereas in this Cello Anthology album, most of these pieces are live recorded, and the recording quality is usually inappreciably shit. A few songs are pretty great, like the Stockhausen piece, or the first Duet II, but a lot of it is really mind-boggling. Like, who thought it would be a good idea to release this poor quality of recordings. In several tracks, she talks over the music to a reporter. She does this for about 30 minutes on the unnecessarily hour-long TV Cello Duets track (which eventually produces some interesting sounds, though). Really, this is just bizarrely poor quality for a kind of music that sounds like it focuses on the details. Thankfully the first chunk of the album is actually good, and I've played those tracks a few times.>7/10 What next?

>Native Nod - Today Puberty, Tomorrow The World This is a mixed bag.
The slower, more emotional tracks are the most disappointing with pretty boring and not really inspired song structures. The melodies are nice, but they are placed in a structural context where they don't work really well or are too predictable.
On the other hand, the faster, more hardcore songs are the most effective.
The great technical ability of Native Nod is really displayed, with the only exception being the vocals: where on the more emo inspired songs I loved how the vocalist sounds like he's on the verge of tears, he that very amazing performance is lost.
Paradoxically, they are also more emotive: they deliver, thanks to the speed and melodies, a big dose of anger and frustration.
I don't really know, there is not that much to talk about here: the melodies are generally nice, even if some aren't great, the vocals sometimes work sometimes not, same for the songwriting.
It's OK, I guess, not really recommended.

>>60897625 Great lyrics right here, discussing the merits of "fucking the club up" from a nihilist perspective, basically classic Brokencyde stuff. The guest verse is strong and the way they give every singer one verse really emphasizes their marxist ideals and strengthens their image as a collective. The juxtaposition between individualism as shown by the lyrics yet a sense of community as expressed by who the members of Brokencyde actually are makes them quite a fascinating act. The rage of the screams, applied very tastefully in the background, only makes this juxtaposition more interesting by projecting Brokencyde's undiluted rage, while not expressing whether this rage is a hatred for individualism or something else. I would say the former is more likely, as the background vocals going "ayy ayy" towards the end of the track seem to indicate Brokencyde's sense of community, but it's all speculation and I would like to hear some thoughts from other people on this matter.
The beat is great of course, you can definitely hear trap influences throughout Brokencyde's music and this song reinforces this influence by making it more prominent. Not a bad idea, I must say. The melody sadly doesn't always keep up. It's pleasantly minimalistic in its approach and invokes comparisons to the likes of Steve Reich and La Monte Young, but in the end it feels too repetitive anyway due to how rather than changing subtly, it doesn't change at all. On the other hand, one could say this lack of change symbolizes that we are dealing with the same Brokencyde as back in 2009, when they were at their peak. It's good to know Brokencyde didn't sell out to the mainstream and remains the unique avant-garde outfit with lusty negro attitudes and a punk ethos that it has always been.

>Anton Webern - The Complete String Trios and Quartets (Arditti String Quartet) I already own Op. 5, Op. 9, and Op. 28 on Neue Wiener Schule, but I actually like the Arditti String Quartet versions more. I thought I was imagining it at first, so I went back to the other album to compare, and yeah. Arditti somehow does it even better.
In addition to Webern's usual unearthly serialism thing, displayed prominently on those first three pieces, there's a ton of much richer material on here too. I really loved the 13-minute "Streichquartette" even if it felt more 'standard classical' than 'modern classical'. I also thoroughly enjoyed the tender, sweeping, closing pieces, Langsamer Satz for Streichquartett (Slow Movement for String Quartet) and Rondo für Streichquartette (Rondo for String Quartet).
While I truly do enjoy listening to the strange, delicate serial pieces that Schoenberg, Webern, and Berg seem to be so fond of, it's refreshing to hear some simply beautiful classical music from a violin quartet.
>9/10 Man, there's been a lot of good music on this chart. Glad I decided to do this. I'm still doing Szalonek next btw.

>Claudio Rocchi - Volo Magico n. 1 >70s progressive rock, pretty psychedelic This album is still one of my favourites in the genre, might be because I really like the guy, though. The lyrics are influenced by what we can call "new-age" philosophy and stuff like that, they can get a bit cheesy but it's part of the album's charm if you ask me. The first two tracks are a must-listen for every psychedelic prog aficionado, the guitar solo at the end of the first one is very simple but pretty sweet, love the cheeky crescendo that leads up to it. The whole album is incredibly catchy btw

Yesterday's album was really fantastic. Beautiful hushed overtones combined with an ear for melody that I totally loved. Each of the four parts in this main suite were distinct and likeable, ranging from charming to precious to uneasy to playful. My favourite was the 2nd part, carrying the melody in the bass and gently dabbing these gorgeous downtempo beats, which might just be the most soothing thing I've heard all month. Wonderful album. 7/10 Time to listen to today's. Let's see if it can top the last.

The first track is my favorite and probably everyone's favorite, featuring 3 amazing "songs" joined by moments of chaotic but controlled freakouts. The album keeps up the great quality, never surpassing the first track but having memorable moments all around. Instrumentation is what takes the cake here, and even though I didn't like him for the first couple listens the vocalist fits the style very well. He may sound a bit off place at first but I enjoyed his voice a lot on this last listen

Motor Booty Affair - Parliament (1978) The first half of this album was actually really good. Extremely danceable, extremely corny what with all the sound effects and altered voices and parliament-ish lyrics. If the first half of this album were an EP by itself it would be an 8, but the second half really killed the whole vibe they had going in my opinion. The second half traded the wacked-out, fun stuff that had occupied the first half for much plainer material so overall I'm going to have to go with a 6.

>Dag Nasty - Can I Say I would like to thank Dag Nasty to remind me that good music doesn't have to be experimental or anything like that, it only has to be good. But what does "good music" means? In this case, when everything is exceptionally well made. When I say everything, I mean everything. The songwriting is very enjoyable, despite not being that original. The melodies are exceptionally well written: they are violent, hardcore, fresh, original, enthralling. This album is filled with amazing arrangements: fills, melodic bits, motifs putted in the right place at the right moment and all that jazz make Can I Say even more enjoyable than how it already is. There are even some guitar solos, that, even if they aren't that much, they still sound gorgeous. Don't forget the fast rhythms and pace of this album: the songs take you with violence and they put you in the center of an angry mosh. A few moments of pause in between the tracks, and then the mosh starts again. I love this type of punk sound. The performance by every member of the band is top notch. The singer, sometimes, can deliver amazing performance, like in the beginning of "Values Here"; unfortunately this doesn't happen often, but is still a very good vocal part. The guitar makes for some fantastic melodic moments in almost every song, it's definitely the best part of this record. Are you a fan of punk? Recommended Are you a fan of emocore? Recommended Are you a fan of good music? Recommended 8/10 Also I've been getting a lot into Jim O'Rourke and Subaru Stevens lately, probably gonna make a chart soon

>>60922397 It sounds tempting but Brian ain't too great live anymore. If I went I'd want him to sign my copy of pet sounds like every other person there will want too. I'll consider it though, thanks for the infi.

>Henry Purcell - Dido and Aeneas Moving through Baroque operas, I found myself facing with Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas. Now this one had several moments that grasped my attention. Starting off with the lute. I guess it is my love for the instrument at this point that made its small performances stand out. In particular, I would like to point out the guitar dance that occurs in the second act (track 24 on the CD). I heard a lot of John Dowland in the arrangement, a lot of virtuosity in the performance too. The next thing that caught my ear was the execution of the transition into the second act. The ground-shaking percussion and the very tense string arrangements were a perfect introduction to the whole witches plotting theme. It really stands out as compared to the more joyful harpsichord driven sections prior to this particular bit. The choruses were prevalent as expected but one thing that really caught me by surprise was the echo execution at the end of the first scene, second act. I don’t recollect encountering something like that, so it was pleasant to notice. My final comment would be on the performance of Simone Kermes as Dido. The moments when she performed her softer soprano sections made my heart melt. That final “Remember me!” that pretty much closed off the whole play made me tear up even though I didn’t find the libretto that interesting. It’s just so tender and fragile that you are just bound to get swept away by the sheer beauty. So yeah, that’s it for this one. I really liked it but the story of the Aeneid adaptation didn’t really stick with me. Nevertheless, the more grim arrangements were brilliant and so were the performances from Kermes. 8+/10

>Witold Szalonek - s/t (Silesian String Quartet) This was pretty consistently fantastic sonorism (I think I'm using that term correctly). I enjoyed 1+1+1+1 for cello and violin better than the version for string quartet. I mostly enjoyed the 45 minute 3-part piece in the middle of the album a lot, but it might have stretched on a bit too long. Overall nice listen, but nothing really particularly struck me, except for the first version of 1+1+1+1. I might just be getting a bit tired of the whole "string quartet" thing.>7/10 I think I'm going to do For Philip Guston today, while I study for my physics and psych exams tomorrow.

>>60923815 It's not really emo, it's more like hardcore with some emotional vibes here and there.
It's strange that it's so overlooked, since the band has the guitarist from Minor Threat and it's placed among the initiators of emo
