>IOSONOUNCANE - DIE IOSONOUNCANE delivers an absurd but enjoyable mix of psychedelia, pop, experimental, singer/songwriting, electronic and so much else. The melodies are very catchy and original, but is the instrumentations that really makes this album special: the instruments used aren't very original, except for some oddities here and there, but the way they are putted together is. From guitars to synths to this percussions to a brass section to a drum machine to throat singing (!) this album uses an impressive mix of analogic and digital instrumentation. But this is kind of a tricky pony: despite the fact that the majority of this record sounds fantastic, there are bits that just are not that great to me, mostly because some synths aren't really that well-programmed. The songwriting is hit-or-miss: songs like "Stormi" are incredibly well written, are full of passion, but the longer tracks (with the exception of "Tanca") seem to be a little bit too incoherent. Definitely not a bad album, it's actually a very nice piece of music. 7/10 IT'S OVER

Jerry Paper - Big Pop For Chameleon World [2014] Jerry Paper is one of the most interesting artists in these last years because he found a cool niche of sound and can take advantage of it very well. The whole goofy and lousy future image is paired with a deep voice and dizzy cheap instrumentation - also, really good pop songwriting. It's nice but it has one of the worst thing in album format ever, the intro with computer voice that says artist and album name. I guess it does kind of fit here, but i find it still very cheesy-

There is some good moments here and there but there's nothing really memorable like in their debut. 7/10>Raate - Sielu, linna The cover art was promising but this is not very good, the overall sound is weak and too monotonous. Back in those days, albums were just vessels for two or so singles padded with a shit ton of filler. And that's /exactly/ what this album is. There's "Love Stinks" and "Cathy's Clown", two stone-cold classic tracks, and then there's absolutely nothing else of interest. Such is 50s/60s pop. 2.0-

I listened to this Reiko Kudo EP and it's very neat. The reason why I found it is because my favorite meme plays on a couple of tracks and even contributes some vocals on the last track. Reiko has a very peaceful voice that is well-complimented by her keyboard. On the other hand, I think it is really cool that it does have disrupting episodes from Haino's guitar and this interesting NOISY AS FUCK snare hit on Don't Fall Asleep. Cool shit tee bee haich 7/10

Here's some thoughts on stuff I've been listening to a lot lately Animal Collective's Feels is probably the best thing they ever did- the purple bottle, grass, bees, banshee beat, and loch raven are glorious. Wormrot's Dirge is truly excellent, but at the end of the day, just isn't insect warfare. The motifs' cross paths is so simple but oh so lovely Lift to Experience's Texas Jerusalem Crossroads is really solid, imagine a version of slint's Spiderland that doesn't suck Smog's Red Apple Falls isn't as good as The Doctor Came at Dawn

Hello friends. I've been out of town without my computer for the weekend. How have you all been? also, a few quick reviews. Little Women - Throat>post avant jazzcore Man, I really just wasn’t into this. Maybe just because I’ve already listened to Zs and Naked City and a few other experimental avant-jazz records with super loud drums and guitars and squealing saxophones, but this was neither easy to listen to nor particularly innovative or interesting. Would not recommend. Also, couldn’t you make the last song any more tasteful than literally just people screaming? Lula Côrtes/Zé Ramalho - Paêbirú>psych folk, psychedelic rock >for some reason i didn’t write down who recommended this one This was pretty cool. Apparently it’s a concept album about the four elements (Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water I presume), but I could never tell because it’s all in Portuguese. Anyways, I liked how diverse the sounds on this album were. Almost every song kept a primitive, folky vibe to it even though the rest of the instrumentation was going from jazzy saxes to proggy flute solos or a fuzzy punk jam. This is a really good example of how to keep cohesion in your album without it getting boring; diversity without losing direction. Black Elk - Sparks>drone, ambient A pretty, soothing collection of acoustic and orchestral instruments manipulated and droned out by electronics and effects, sorta like Fennesz. The first half of this album was pretty unremarkable, but the second half started to get a lot more emotional, as the melodies the instruments were playing started to become more apparent, and the droned out way the notes hauntingly ring out like they’re being heard over a dark field… Anyways, this was pretty good. Recommend for anyone who likes Tim Heckery, drony piano stuff. (1/2)

(2/2) Junior Delahaye - Reggae>reggae, dub This album seems to be a pretty safe medium between the styles of the previous three records from this month. It had some electronic elements like the more dub-oriented ones, and less guitar than Best Dressed Chicken, but still had some nice vocal performances and keeps a warm, organic energy about it with the help of saxophones, guitars, and bass. The extended jam in the second half of “All I Need is Jah” was really cool. I never really thought about soloing in the context of a reggae song, but it really makes sense with the laid back instrumental to have one instrument step in and take the place of vocals to shine for a few minutes. Generally I also enjoyed the optimistic tone of the album, focusing on happiness and love is pleasant every now and then, especially after so much avant-teen depression.

Anyone want to rec me some Houston music? Got DJ Screw, gonna get some z-ro and Big Moe. Still haven't heard Jandek. Would it actually be worth it to hear all of You'll Cowards Don't Even Smoke Crack? I'm kind of interested in some of that early psych rock such as 13th floor elevators. >Tortoise - The Catastrophist (2016) Man, this was pretty bland. It wasn't terrible, but it doesn't come close to the quality of their older work. Maybe it's because I haven't listened to an album from them since TNT, so I don't know if there has been a gradual change in style since then. Only a single track stretched past the 4 minute mark. Their strength is in their longer, sprawling compositions. I don't like their new sound direction either, I can't quite put my finger on it, but the range of sounds seems limited, like they're working with a lot less. If you love TNT and MNLWND, don't listen to this. 5/10

>Mike Cooper - Trout Steel 'I've Got Mine' is probably the best folk-rock song I have ever heard. It has two acoustic guitars that meander over a very groovy bass, while repeating a theme with several slight variatons. While this is happening several other instruments start adding a shitton of free-jazz-ish details and MC sings and hums along with the guitars. It's a brilliant song and the rest of the album is meh in comparison. Besides 'Pharaoh's March', an alright free-form instrumental track, this album is pretty much filled with acoustic Grateful Dead songs. It's not bad and I do like most of them, but not one of them comes close to that fourth song. 3/5

>Mike Cooper - The Machine Gun Co. This album has a similar pop folk-rock sound to Places I Know, but it has two long songs that both have some interesting free-jazzy elements. They're both not quite as good as 'I've got Mine', but they are a lot better than the songs on Places I Know. I still don't like the electric guitar. It's unnecessary and it sounds like shit.

>Embrace - Embrace The only release by Embrace is full of good ideas realized very well, but doesn't reach the highs of the other bands of MacKaye. Speaking of MacKaye, I don't really like his voice, I find it to be simply not that remarkable, and this album is no exception; despite this, he can still deliver some nice and intense moments. Embrace know how to write some original and effective melodies, thanks to this factor I really liked the more emotive and slower tracks here; I can only imagine how much I would have loved this album I it was all written in this style, without the more hardcore bits. The songwriting is also something to write home about: never predictable o formulaic, it places the melodies one after another, finding the perfect balance between the hardcore/post-hardcore style and progressive evolutions and never being dispersive. All this elements are valorized by the clear but aggressive production. Despite all these good factors, this album never goes above good, it doesn't do enough to be something more unique, and it's a real shame: a lot of wasted potential. 7/10

More thoughts on Mike Cooper:>Mike Cooper - New Globe Notes >Mike Cooper - Fratello Mare These albums are very similar. They both have have Cooper playing Hawaiian slide guitar licks, nature recordings and some traditional instruments from all around the Pacific Ocean. Conceptually it's quite similar to Jon Hassell's 4th World Music. The field recordings are nothing wild and the guitar playing is veeery laidback, so in theory the music should sound relaxing af, but the way MC puts the sounds together and manipulates them results in something unsettling. These were interesting listens. I don't think I will come back to them often, but they were good. 3/5>Mike Cooper & Steve Gunn - Cantos de Lisboa Shit, this one was good. All seven songs on this project have completely different styles. There's a blues track with a heavy drone in the background, there's Gunn and Cooper doing some very good Fahey-esque fingerpicking with a tape loop of another guitar keeping them together, there's harsh string scratching free improv, there's brilliant EAI, there's singing and there's even a cello. But somehow every track on this thing sounds like it belongs there. I think it's because of how gloomy every track is. The first one and the fourth one have respectively 'saudade' and 'blues' in their titles, but every single song (even the harsh ones) feels sad in its own way and I really like that. This was very good 3.5-4/5

I did dig the Death Ambient record once again. Having listened to it in August, I think I just realized that this is my first Frith-centred album. Sounds pleb as fuck, doesn't it? Don't worry. I plan to dig through his discog and through Loren Mazzacane Connors once I'm done with Jandek.
I also listened to Utsuroi by Kazuma Kubota and I thought it was better developed than the 2 EPs I heard. It had tasteful noise plastered on ambient noise backdrop ala Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. I have to say I was thinking more of Burial and Julianna Barwick when listening to it. Maybe it's the more relaxed overall tone of the album. Either way, it's short, pretty and I liked it.

Long Nights and Hell's Kitchen Park both have a grittier guitar sound and that helps a bit, but if somebody told me they were slowed down Ry Cooder soundtracks I wouldn't be surprised.
It isn't that his music is bad per se, but going through his entire discography seems like a giant chore.

tokyo anal dynamite was certainly interesting but after a certain point it lost my attention and just became background noise. i had the same problem with kveldssanger, but less so. it might grow on me. i think tomorrow im gonna listen to either parson sound, have one on me, or the dance of the sun and the moon when i have the time too. for now i think i might relisten to a couple albums off of this.

(1968)>free jazz Represents the more mellow side of free jazz, in direct contrast to the more spastic and noisy sounds I usually associate with the genre. Taylor's a phenomenal composer and pianist, but the rest of his band isn't exactly up to snuff, and the use of two bassists just makes the bass sounds seem blurry and unfocused. Still a good—almost great—jazz album, if not completely extraordinary. 3.0+

Cluster - Curiosum (1981)>krautrock, progressive electronic That "krautrock" tag is confusing, this album seems to literally just consist of Moebius and Roedelius dicking around on synths for 40 minutes.
