It's the 21nd of October
The point of these threads, is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to, and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.
We track our progress using calendars, which we fill with the albums we listen to on each day and a rating of some sort for all of them. There are templates in the following posts. We encourage you to write the albums' titles and the artists' names somewhere on your calendar. We don't have any tools for creating these calendars, we use simple image editing softwares. You can predetermine a schedule for a month or you can report back on whatever album you randomly picked every day. Many of us make our schedules interesting in various way, popular ones being genre restrictions, new releases, and recs from the /daily/ community.
We had a
plug.dj room, which we used to shitpost for a little while. It's now forever empty, so if you want to spend a little time there, it is too late. You can find the temporary substiute here though:
>https://synctube.org/r/Some_dumb_synctube_channel Anyone can start the threads, but usually one of /daily/'s dedicated trips starts them.
We encourage you to start it, just be sure to use the standard OP.
>Templates: TOPSTERS
Most importantly, get taste! (or don't if you don't feel like it, who am I to tell you what to do?)

Nicolas Collins - It Was a Dark and Stormy Night (1992)>electronic, glitch I normally don't let a single track ruin an album for me, but when that single track is 27 minutes long I'm fine with doing that. The first four tracks are /phenomenal/ glitch. Definite 3.5+ to those tracks alone. Sadly, the title track is an overblown mess with some of the worst spoken word I've ever heard on record. Probable 0.5+ to that, the weird fuzzy guitar sound is kinda cool. So a 2.0+ to the whole thing.

> David Crosby 'If Only I Could Remember My Name' (Atlantic, 1971) Crosby's debut solo album. The songs I like on this are the ones that have a slightly sinister undercurrent to them. "What Are Their Names", for example, evokes the hidden machinations of the faceless corporations that run the world, and "Cowboy Movie" reminds me of the darker tracks from Neil Young's 'On the Beach'. Other tracks, such as "Traction in the Rain" and "Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)", just washed over me without leaving much of a lasting impression, although they were reasonably pleasant to listen to. 7.5/10

hello lads, I haven't browsed /mu/ for something like a year, now this seems like one of the most interesting threads in the catalog, how should I come up with a calendar? should I just pick a genre or a theme and then find some releases I haven't listened to yet and put them there?

Today, I listened to Alcachofa by Villalobos (not the guitar one, the bleepy one). I'm not really feeling this and worst thing is, I have no idea why. With this kind of very unorganic stuff with movements pulled on a long structure, getting "hooked" is pretty much what matters the most. And in this case, we have a fairly sober style with pretty much just the bare essential for a tech-house album. That means it leaves you very little to dig through if you do not adhere with the overall style of a track. Which sadly is my case. Be it the computerized vocals of the opening track or some of the distorded basslines you can find all throughout the album, I'm just not really feeling this tbh (to be honest).

>DJ Screw - Bigtyme Vol II: All Screwed Up With an innovative technique DJ Screw remixes various southern rap songs from the 90s, creating something new and unique. The tracks are slowed down, and Screw adds to them effects like beat skipping and scratching: the resultant songs are muddy, relaxing, psychedelic. But what's the point? What is so special in this extremely simple thing? It's difficult to explain, but the fact is that as you go on with this album, the more this album grows within you: it relaxes you, it makes you feel its atmosphere, it makes you feel what he wants you to make you feel. This is because of the very peculiar sound: this type of songs, when slowed down, became a lot more hypnotic and mesmerizing, thanks to their funky instrumentals and monotonous and deep voice. This creates a unique vibe, and this monolithic songs are touched only by Screw, that chops and screws them, creating interesting combinations of sounds. This style of remixing makes this album flow, making it a long, immersive and psychedelic mix. So I just finished listening to Gas, Zauberberg as part of my first entry in my first week (my calendar:
>>59938233 ) and this album was fucking colossal. I started listening to it on my way from university while biking and I took a detour to go have a look at the park, it was amazing to hear these tracks while biking in the thin mist among the autumn trees.
It felt like the tone of the album progressively became darker, with the end of the record being a very dreamy, slow descent into silence, not really paid attention to each track progression but the album as a whole is a very nice ride from a slightly more focused sound in the beginning to just a droney hazy comfortable sound in the end. I definitely need to hear this again though.
9/10, great album.

>Daniel Blomquist - Nascen/Egress Acloserlisten.com did a writeup on this one, but that it didn't convince me to listen to it. After recognizing Blomquists name I decided to check it out anyway.
Blomquist throws sounds together into a big soup of noise and the result somehow manages to sound a little loungy. The sounds transition very smoothly and nothing sounds out of place. That might be the why it's so boring. idk this did nothing for me. If I want to listen to quiet music I usually don't want to listen to something so noisy.
>Godafoss - Trans-neptunian Objects I listened to the first track of this project while hanging out of my window smoking a cigarette. Somehow the soft sound of traffic blended very nicely with the dark ambient droning.
The whole thing reminded me a bit of the first few minutes of Feedbacker, but that might just be because I haven't heard that much dark ambient music like this.
This was a very relaxing listen.

Sooo I typed up a review on Księżyc but accidentally a button and everything disappeared. Here's a quick version. Loved the medieval classical/freak folk influenced vocals, liked the medieval instrumentation (big plus for harpsichord and woodwinds, indifferent to the synths), didn't care much for the lyrics that sounded like they came from a Sapkowski novel. That's great and all, but I didn't dig it that much. Together it all felt great though, so 8+ with a possible 9 bump eventually.

>>59936856 Jambinai- Differance
(South korean post rock fusion, recommended for fans of GY!BE, Macha, and Geinoh Yamashirogumi's AKIRA soundtrack)
I've known this album for some time now, but I felt it deserves more attention, so I'm reviewing it for y'all.
Jambinai is a fusion of post rock and traditional Korean music, incorporating many traditional instruments that I don't know the names of into their music. The blend is seamless, giving an already powerful post rock sound a strong cultural identity and a sound entirely unheard before.
The album has mighty swells and inviting, atmospheric lulls. It starts incredibly strong with the songs "time of extinction" (for which they recorded a music video) and "Grace Kelly" (my favorite on the album). From there, it moves into the more expected post rock territory, with the characteristic long-winded building up and crescendos- but not without surprises to keep you drawn in (as if the instrumentation hasn't done a stellar job of that already).
I feel that the pacing on this record is a bit off- the start is so strong, the rest almost feels like catching up. It makes the longer, more subdued tracks seem more dull than they really are. Despite the structural shortcomings, it remains a mighty release that has me incredibly excited to hear what they create next- not to mention their visiting my state for sxsw in march (a show givingbear and I just might be at!).
If pressed, I would have to give it a score of 8.5 or 9, with room to grow. I believe this band is capable of making 10s. They are, to me, one of the most exciting current acts.

Edu Comelles - A Country Falling Apart This might be recorded at a beach near an old deserted ship like the one on the cover. Or it might be recorded somewhere near another deserted human structure. It reminded me a little bit of Day-Z. Usually in field recordings the artist plays a very passive role in the recordings. He or she usually isn't part of the "field" that's being recorded. This might work for nature or traffic or places with a lot of people, but I don't think it works as well for abandonded buildings. Buildings don't make sounds like birds, cars, trains or people. Edu Comelles most likely did step into his own "field" on this album (or had someone do that for him). There's sounds of objects moving around. There's sounds of someone banging something against a metal surface. There's sounds of rusty doors opening. This makes the building (or boat or whatever) come to live. One thing I really like about this is how he managed to combine nature sounds and man-made sounds. The contrast between the serenity of nature and the abrasiveness of metal is very cool. This label was fantastic. I got the idea to do little pictures with my thoughts on the netlabel and the albums I listened to. In the end of my journey through these things I will add them all together into one big collage. Since most of these artists don't have a RYM page I need something to come back to to see what artists I need to dig deeper into and this will do.

I planned on listening to Univers Zero today but idk if I will get around to doing it. In the last couple of days, I have listened to some japanese memes from my chart:>Ichiko Aoba - 0 I'm really amazed by this album. It's just a japanese girl and her acoustic guitar for one hour, with some field recordings on the side. I don't understand the lyrics (looked up some translated lyrics though) and nothing going on here is really experimental or odd, and yet it's just so great. The melodies Ichiko creates on her guitar are just so serene and pleasant to listen to, and her clear voice compliments her guitar playing excellently. It's really wonderful how she can take a standard formula and make it sound so wonderful, somehow. It's hard to do this record justice with words, I can only say that I recommend it to anyone to see what it's about. 8.5/10>Taku Unami, Moe Kamura & Tetuzi Akiyama Speaking of acoustic, subdued japanese music, here's another little gem. Contrary to what tags like "avant-folk" and "onkyo" might suggest, this album is far from inaccessible or unpleasant to listen to. It's soft and calm, usually having Kamura's pretty vocals float on top of two (usually acoustic) guitars and subdued percussion, with the occasional appearance of electronics or electric guitar effects. Especially cute is "Before Sprout, After Seed", where besides guitar there's some maracas and a lil bit of small keyboard sounds thrown into the mix. It's comfyyy. Some other tracks make use of silence, which I guess is why the album is tagged as onkyo (also probably just because it features two onkyo figurehead). It's all nice and surprisingly pretty diverse, it's just soothing and comfy and ah. That being said, not all of the tracks hit home for me, especially the instrumental tracks. Kamura's vocals are really sweet and give a lot of these tracks their form and make them so good. Nonetheless, definitely worth a try for everyone. 7.5/10

>>59949530 >Jun Togawa - Suki Suki Daisuki A quirky little synth pop album with Togawa's vocals as the main attraction. Her vocals are either high-pitched and girly or deep and operatic, which is quite a weird juxtaposition and only works to some degree. It works best on the bouncy, catchy title track, where she utilizes both vocal styles on the same track to surprising effect. "Sayonara wo Oshiete" is also a success, as well as the only track where she only uses her deep voice. It's darker and more mature than most of the record, and while the more fun and catchy stuff works most of the time, most tracks just stand in the shadow of the title track. "Koino Corrida" does something completely different by being some sort of synth pop classical crossover thing, but I can't say I'm a fan of this kind of quirk. There's also the awkward "Angel Baby", which sounds strangely dissonant and has Togawa singing in gratuitous English. Pretty bad. Luckily, most of the album is fun synth pop stuff that happens to be overshadowed by one clearly superior track. 6.5/10

http://insub.org/ >On vous parle de la prison - Improvised Music out of Jail This is all recorded during music workshops in Swiss prisons. In a sense this could be outsider music. Some of the prisoners performing on here clearly have never touched an instrument in their lives. Some of the guys try to imitate English punk rock, but their English isn't that good, so it ends up sounding somewhat retarded. On several songs skilled artists (that are most likely not in prison) remix the recordings into professional sounding music.
The entire thing is extremely experimental. There's field recordings, spoken word and glitches all over the place. Definitely not what you'd expect from random prisoners.
It's too inconsistent and varied to work very well as an album. Some of the tracks are really good though.

>VA - Music Of Idris Ackamoor 1971 - 2004 This was incredibly exhausting. 2 hours of spiritual free jazz with afrojazz bits. Idris is a very powerful leader with amazing sax skills (his fiddle playing was cool too). I think what really made this compilation stand out is the additional ethno-jazz instruments kicked into this already spiritual mix, as well as the quality level. There isn’t a moment on this album where I would say the quality is lacking. In general, I think I did enjoy the ethno-jazz bits a bit more, although tracks like Topanga kicked some major ass. It’s all really really good and works well as a portrait of Ackamoor’s life work. 9/10 PS: Cubana is a 10/10 composition.

>Life Without Buildings - Any Other City I don’t get this. The whole album sounds exactly like Kim Gordon’s bit on Teen Age Riot over and over and over again. I am not sure if I am missing something in the girl’s lyrical delivery outside of her talking about her life ideas, events, surroundings. I guess she has a pleasant voice for spoken word sections and sometimes the instrumentation varies from sped up clean guitar twangs to slowed down clean guitar twangs but that is about it. It’s nice for a background listen but nothing special up close. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ tbh fam 5-/10

Ladies (>implying) and gentlemen, today in the Jambinai Arena in some small rural town somewhere in South Korea, the fight of the century! On my left, we have some loud tracks that go all out with heavy percussion and cleverly dissonant woodwinds, all of this without the slightest idea of what "dynamics" are and a steady flow that makes some completely directionless tracks! And on my right, we have long, two-parts tracks with minutes of buildup and creshendo without any climax! Now watch in awe as those two never collide and give you an painfuly frustrating album because no one had any idea how to articulate anything and cannot understand what "momentum" means! Seriously though, it's not bad but it's not good either. It could very well be but it missed the point. The guys have all the elements they need to make stuff work, they have the right ideas, but they apparently can't see what to do with what they have. Bummer.

>Joanna Newsom - Divers I like Joanna. While I was never fond of her voice, I did really like her orchestration on both Ys and HOOM. She always got a really interesting melodic component out of either larger scale ensembles or her solo harp. So what’s up with her new album? It’s good. A lot of the tracks owe a lot to the playful piano sections that work very well with Joanna’s vocal style. The harp was awesome as usual here too, especially on one of my favourites from here “Leaving The City” and "Divers". The bits on the title track were very pretty as well. What I did not like is this little track “Goose Eggs”. Once the track approaches the culmination, it sounded like it simplified her songwriting methods to some 80s progressive rock cheese. The lyrics do redeem it by quiet a lot though, so that’s a plus. The other interesting track was “Same Old Man”, which was a very short banjo-infused folk track. The sheer simplicity makes it stand out. I also have to say that her vocal delivery grew quiet a bit on me since the release of HOOM. It is rather fitting to all her lyrical endeavours as well as the instrumentations presented here. The production sounds good as usual. Once again Albini was involved, so I am not surprised by how natural all the instruments on here sound. Also reminder that there is a sample of a mourning dove from Cornell Lab Of Ornithology on “Time, As A Symptom” so she definitely gets extra /daily/ patrician points for this.

>>59965178 The lyrics are cool as usual. Her lyrical imagery is very well-developed and has some depth, even when she talks about very simple emotional states. I feel like the artwork of the album in the bootleg fits the lyrics very well too. They all feature this feeling of some historical pantasma floating all over the natural world of today and narrating all the things it sees. This image probably makes no sense, but this is overall image this album radiated to me.
To finish this shitty review off, I think it doesn’t surpass Ys and HOOM. It is really hard to follow up albums like that but I still think she did a good job. I liked it. I think it can get to an 8 at some point.

>cold body radiation - the great white emptiness just when i thought black gays would never produce anything to my liking. tasteful use of abraison (its not overinflated which would hurt something that tries to be "beautiful" - the un/distorted contrast may be a bit cliche but this band does either well), chords (its not going for obvious overt sappiness), bass (how its aiding and adding melody, idk just thought it sticks out in a nice and soft way) and drums make this stand a cut above the glossy mush. only things that i can say bugged me are that it sometimes fails to provide satisfying endings, and the distorted sections coulda been mixed a lil differently 7/10

Volker Hennes - Emperor Ambassador As suggested by the title, this record is made using only Remo drum heads. Hennes has attached some kind of excitation device to various drum heads under different tensions to produce sounds that have textures of orchestral instruments. The clear heads sound like trumpets and trombones and sometimes strings. The coated heads give an edge to the brass sound, and in CoatedEmperor 12" can sound even like an overdriven guitar. A ton of work and experimentation went into this album, and really pushes the envelope on what is possible. Who knew there was an orchestra hiding in the drum kit?
