I enjoyed it, but then again I listened to it at 1 in the morning. I liked it more than The Epic, which is kinda long. It was a nice breathe of air to listen to him and it be over in 30 minutes. Seriously, I couldn't believe it was over when it was. I'll return to it but most likely to focus on it and not half awake and drunkenly listen.

I tried to make a jazz thread yesterday and it crashed and burned.

I'm going through Davis's discography. Gonna listen to more this afternoon. REALLY looking forward to the fusion era.

For, I haven't heard everything front to back, but I've heard most of like most all but his 80's and 90's material.

How worth checking out is Coltrane?
I might consider it after Davis.
Has he done fusion/Jazz Funk like Davis and Hancock have? All I've heard from him is A Love Supreme (cliche, I know).

His fusion albums are good but slightly overrated. The real treasure is his 60's quintet albums. If you don't have that much experience listening to jazz you probably won't understand why at this point but if you keep listening then someday you'll understand.

He's definitely worth it, he played on some of Davis' most beloved albums, but he's definitely worth checking out. Once you figure out what Miles albums you like, it'd be easier to recommend a Coltrane album though.

Also sorry I forgot to respond to your second part, he didn't do any jazz fusion/funk stuff because he passed in 1967 before that was a thing. But he did do Spiritual Jazz (much better than Kamasi), and some other Free/avant-garde jazz in his later life

I'd still give him a chance, I used to only like Fusion but now I"m far more selective with my fusion.I hated cool jazz and hard bop and modal jazz but now I love that music and spiritual jazz is awesome. I honestly would just give him a shot. listen to the classics and see what you think

making a "jazz" album with a complete lack of knowledge or respect for the art form. people arent kidding when they say he literally is just running up and down blues and pentatonic scales and his band doesnt groove or swing for shit. its just gimmicky trash. it feels insulting that he thinks thats what jazz is or is about and its just not good man. if someone wants to post those transcriptions with the analysis of one of his solos i will post my transcription and analysis by a different jazz musician to show you the difference in how he plays vs. how every jazz musician plays and youll see that he literally has the soloing competency of a shitty rock guitar player, he just does it on sax.

This is kinda irritating me, like what the fuck. Even in my first semester of jazz combo, which to be fair I only took two semesters of, but they taught you to at it's simplest, change the scale/mode for the chords. not to use one single scale. I mean I'm no talented player, but this is kinda bullshit.

Taking a picture was a pain my ass but here you go. This is the most straight forward solo on the most straight forward tune i had a transcription of. Its the second chorus of wilbur ware's solo on Softly as in a Morning Sunrise from Sonny Rollins live at the village vangaurd in the late 50s. I analyzed the first chorus too but taking a picture is just too much of a pain. Notice the mixture of C minor scales used, the super impositions of the tritone sub of the G7 over the ii-7b5 chord, imposing the parallel major over the F minor in the bridge, motivic development at top and bottom, restatement of the melody, and use of pedal point to create tension leading to the begining of Rollins solo. Also more synchopation and less notes then Kamasi.

I liked it a lot but it doesn't really subvert any expectations or take a lot of risks, which is fine. It's just accessible, very well made jazz, which is why /mu/ pretends to hate it.

Listening right now, and this first song just sounds like elevator music. Like there's really nothing distinguishable about this other than when Kamasi does his weird squeak thing in every solo he decides to do. Not a sax player so I don't know if that's good, but I mean, it's kinda just whatever so far. I will come back with an update

I've been on a Hank Mobley streak as of late. For the longest while I was listening to nearly nothing but bebop, nowadays I'm taking a turn towards hard bop. Feels kinda weird as a bassist, honestly, but as a pianist it feels much more natural, especially since it tends to base itself around the melody rather than the harmony.
