Yo, @ anyone who has heard the new and old TJC mix, am I nuts or am I alone in thinking that the original mix is MUCH better? I mean, Pearson's voice is incredible for sure, but I think bringing it to the forefront and removing so many effects from the guitar mix really removes a lot of the remarkable sounds from this album.
Like, compare these two songs for example. It's considerably worse to my ears but I'd love a second opinion:

These albums make me even more pissed about the cold shitty ass weather.
>James Blackshaw - O True Believers I guess this would qualify as babby's first primitivism but i don't give a shit because it's gorgeous. The guitar playing is beyond amazing (I think 12-string guitars are my fetish) and the additional instrumentation really creates that extra bit of atmosphere. The last track is an especially droney track that functions kinda as a callback to the first one (reworking the first section from the first track into something even more intoxicating), which I thought was really cool.
Makes me wanna go hike in the woods in scorching 40C heat and discover a huge open field with stinky flowers and butterflies and shit. I know I tend to overreact sometimes so regard this blue as a cautious blue but it's fucking gr8 mates.
>Earth - Hibernaculum I think this is p much what I was looking for in The Bees Made Honey. I liked Bees, but it didn't quite deliver the droneyness I'd expected; I guess it was too high energy (???) in a sense for what it was trying to accomplish. Hibernaculum delivers in spades, slowing down the woozy, sun-struck post-metal of Bees another 20 BPM and overall just letting it breathe more. Earth are at their best when they just...drone, and that's exactly what they do on this record.
The overall atmosphere actually kinda resembles that of the Blackshaw album, just with a different approach.
Probably my go-to Earth album/10.

The placement of Happy End's Kazemachi Roman at number one on their list of the '100 Best Japanese Rock Albums of All Time' now makes perfect sense to me, now that I've listened to it. By that, I don't mean that I particularly loved the album, but it definitely is the kind of record that would be critically lauded as a country/folk rock classic had it been sung in English, and would probably have been one of my parents' favorite bands (and have placed highly on the American equivalent of this list). However, I'm not condemning the album as some westernized dadrock relic (though it sort of is), as I couldn't help but enjoy most of the music on offer. Maybe it's because of my conditioning from being forced to listen to a lot of music similar to this growing up, but a lot of this record makes me... well, happy. I wasn't expecting twangy country guitars to be so prevalent on this album, especially because of it's country of origin, and especially didn't think there'd be any *yodeling* on this album... but I was certainly proven wrong. All of the songs here fortunately are short enough to never overstay their welcome, but this occasionally leads to some tracks feeling like they've only explored a portion of their musical ideas. Overall, there's nothing exceptional on Kazemachi Roman, but it's a pleasant, feel-good record that I can see myself coming back to for some background music.

None of them have that loose and holey feeling that some of the other shoegaze albums I've heard have-- then again, that could just be the post rock influences doing their work. For that, I'm glad said influences are here.
The obvious MBV throwback of the opener, the dreamier aspect of Tzar Morei, the contrasting falsetto of Amsterdam, the ending of Swarm, the small and triumphant saxaphone of Rulons and melting clarinet, and the final track's calls of glory-- it melds well. Even with some disparate elements that make a track recognizable, layered upon the other instruments, it would take much more time to dissect each one's function in a minute of time.
This one's going to be a grower, that I can tell.

I want to listen to this out in an empty dark expanse of Arizona Desert; a deep Navy Blue and Ebony sky, perforated by shades of color. Out in the expanse, there would be a distant plateau, but I wouldn't want to walk there. I would lay down on the orange dirt, and shiver while watching the lights in the sky glide onward.
Some mile away, a great construct vaguely shaped like an animal, quadripedal, would slowly stalk the land. Sporadic blazes of red appear in my peripheral vision. I can hear it howl and murmur to itself, but pay it no mind.
review from 15-year-old-where-music-saved-his-life aside I really liked this and im sure if looked into its composition more I could justify it

>Dirty Three - Whatever You Love, You Are Suffers from post-rock x slowcore syndrome in some of the worst ways. Pretty, songwriting that's super overblown and unnecessarily elongated. I can't bring myself to dislike it, but what it basically amounts to is just very drawn out pop songs.

>Pauline Oliveros - Accordion & Voice Her voice is incredible, and as a concept I really like this. However, the accordion’s timbre I don’t think works in the slightest as a drone instrument. In fact, I think it’s probably one of the worst things you could use for this format. It’s so breathe-y, and the fact that every few minutes it stops for a fraction of a second really takes me out of an otherwise pretty atmospheric release, albeit conceptually flawed to my ears.

>The Chameleons - John Peel Sessions Someone needs to tell me the appeal of Peel Session right the fuck now. The Chameleons first few albums are impeccable and the song choice here is great, but literally every one of these is just a worse version of an already existing song. Jesus christ. I find that with a few notable exceptions, that's pretty much every Peel Session. There's some damn good bands on Peel Sessions, I just find them to be pretty much worthless recordings.

>Sesame Street - Born to Add Lol. I liked Bert’s Blockbusters more than I thought than I would, but I didn’t LOVE it like I expected. It was innocent, fun, and it made me smile a lot, so how could I hate it. This album was much less charming, and just kinda dumb in a way that wasn’t really fun or enjoyable. Completely skippable but I doubt you were interested in the first place.

Based on that, I would recommend everything Zappa made from Freak Out! to Weasels ripped my flesh.
Freak Out has the same kind of humor and proto-progressive/conceptual vibe that comes from Absolutely Free and is incredibly consistent.
We're Only in It for the Money is probably the most experimental of the Mothers' albums. It fuses rock, concrete, Doo-Wop, etc and goes everywhere at once. It's pretty insane, but not everyone's cup of tea.
Lumpy Gravy is a bit similar in WOII4TM's sound collage, but with more spoken-word sections and a bit of Avant-Garde/Third Stream jazz thrown in.
Uncle Meat is everything music was meant to be and nothing more. Originally a film soundtrack, it culminates experimental rock, avant-garde jazz, musical concrete. It builds up your expectations and immediately shatters them. I think it's impossible to go through Uncle Meat without saying "Wait, what?" at least a few times.
Hot Rats is probably Zappa's most accessible from this era, and is mostly Jazz-Rock fusion/prog. Peaches En Regalia is one of the best songs ever made and the rest is pretty damn good too.
Burnt Weeny Sandwich uses more Doo-Wop and Jazz Rock. It's pretty damn good, but far from his best. Little House I Used to Live In is, I would argue, one of his finest pieces. In a lot of ways is an Uncle Meat lite.
Weasels Ripped My Flesh has more staight-forward experimentation, a mix of free jazz, noise, blues and everything in between. Not quite Uncle Meat levels of insane but it's for sure out there.
Don't go into his comedy rock era though. Please.

RC Sucession's Rhapsody is a pretty standard arena bluesy rock record. It features a collection of energetically performed yet entirely generic rock n' roll tunes, with a few occasional highlights such as the catchy, reggae-esque baseline on the third track, and a riff completely stolen from the Peter Gunn theme on the fourth. The musicians certainly don't do a bad job with the material, all quite proficient at their instruments, but the whole thing is ultimately so forgettable that it's hard to care.

This record is more purely pop than the other releases on this list that I've heard so far, most comparable to Kazemachi Roman. However, unlike Happy End, Yazawa is pretty damn funky. It's reminiscent of western pop of around the same time, though it never matches up to the best of the era. The fifth track, though, is a genuinely great jam, and I can see myself returning to it whether or not I do the same for the rest of the album. It is fun background music, and certainly pleasing to the ears. The cover is fucking incredible, though.
