The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Yo, @ anyone who has heard the new and old TJC mix, am I nuts or am I alone in thinking that the original mix is MUCH better? I mean, Pearson's voice is incredible for sure, but I think bringing it to the forefront and removing so many effects from the guitar mix really removes a lot of the remarkable sounds from this album.
Like, compare these two songs for example. It's considerably worse to my ears but I'd love a second opinion:
Original:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lhvX-Ba5kc New:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cI7k2tolfF0 The opener is a better example of changes in the mix really not working, but I chose this track because it's at least slightly noticeable. Someone tell me I'm not alone in this.
>>72558187 It's the final version except I have to change one transgod album, masked dancers, to Ruiner by A Wilhelm Scream.

Shoji Aketagawa, Kan Mikami, & Toshiaki Ishizuka - Daikanjyo Wow, this performance was amazing. I can't believe this was improvised because this sounds fully composed, and I guess you can't really ask for much more in a free improv record. The piano playing of Aketagawam was far and away the highlight for me, and the chaotic and dense sections were my favorites. I was sort of iffy on the strained vocals at first, but as it went on they grew on me a bit. I can't really think of anything else to say, but this was entertaining almost in its entirety which is rare in a free improv record. 4.0/5 sorry for shitty review, what next

>tfw file size too big so need to switch to disgraceful .jpg format >trip up vs s >Bluetile Lounge - Lowercase I get it, they play slowcore so of course the music is sloooooowwwwww, but these guys lack everything that makes other slowcore acts interesting. There are no melodies to latch onto, the lyrics are barely comprehensible due to the singer sounding like he's on benzos, it just trudges forth without going anywhere, really. It's not offensive to the ears or anything, in fact it's a little too inoffensive, a little too sleep-inducing. Moments like the last 3 or so minutes of "Ambered" save this one from being entirely forgettable, but yeah, I can't say I'm a big fan. 2.0 smurm, gib rec + meme>Peste Noire - Ballade Cuntre lo Anemi Francor I don't give a shit about most black metal at this point, but this is serviceable enough. These albums make me even more pissed about the cold shitty ass weather.
>James Blackshaw - O True Believers I guess this would qualify as babby's first primitivism but i don't give a shit because it's gorgeous. The guitar playing is beyond amazing (I think 12-string guitars are my fetish) and the additional instrumentation really creates that extra bit of atmosphere. The last track is an especially droney track that functions kinda as a callback to the first one (reworking the first section from the first track into something even more intoxicating), which I thought was really cool.
Makes me wanna go hike in the woods in scorching 40C heat and discover a huge open field with stinky flowers and butterflies and shit. I know I tend to overreact sometimes so regard this blue as a cautious blue but it's fucking gr8 mates.
>Earth - Hibernaculum I think this is p much what I was looking for in The Bees Made Honey. I liked Bees, but it didn't quite deliver the droneyness I'd expected; I guess it was too high energy (???) in a sense for what it was trying to accomplish. Hibernaculum delivers in spades, slowing down the woozy, sun-struck post-metal of Bees another 20 BPM and overall just letting it breathe more. Earth are at their best when they just...drone, and that's exactly what they do on this record.
The overall atmosphere actually kinda resembles that of the Blackshaw album, just with a different approach.
Probably my go-to Earth album/10.

The placement of Happy End's Kazemachi Roman at number one on their list of the '100 Best Japanese Rock Albums of All Time' now makes perfect sense to me, now that I've listened to it. By that, I don't mean that I particularly loved the album, but it definitely is the kind of record that would be critically lauded as a country/folk rock classic had it been sung in English, and would probably have been one of my parents' favorite bands (and have placed highly on the American equivalent of this list). However, I'm not condemning the album as some westernized dadrock relic (though it sort of is), as I couldn't help but enjoy most of the music on offer. Maybe it's because of my conditioning from being forced to listen to a lot of music similar to this growing up, but a lot of this record makes me... well, happy. I wasn't expecting twangy country guitars to be so prevalent on this album, especially because of it's country of origin, and especially didn't think there'd be any *yodeling* on this album... but I was certainly proven wrong. All of the songs here fortunately are short enough to never overstay their welcome, but this occasionally leads to some tracks feeling like they've only explored a portion of their musical ideas. Overall, there's nothing exceptional on Kazemachi Roman, but it's a pleasant, feel-good record that I can see myself coming back to for some background music. 6+

Day 3: Zimbabwe Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi - Tuku Music (1999)>Chimurenga Chimurenga is a genre categorized as "Afro-pop music from Zimbabwe popularized by Thomas Mapfumo. It is based on the traditional mbira thumb piano but with modern electric instrumentation and the lyrics are of social and political nature." This album was really good, it was nice weather here today too so I listened to this album on repeat about three or four times. It's really breezy, warm and chill. The first track has some really cool syncopations and is, along with Tsika Dzedu and Ndima Ndapedza, the most upbeat track on the album. The rest of the album feels mostly like relax-in-the-sun. It's a nice mix of traditional southern african music with a more modern, western pop sound. The instrumentation mostly consists of various hand-played percussion instruments playing along with a standard drum kit, electric guitar playing soft easy melodies, and an organ playing some backing chords. The vocals are supported by background vocals, both male and female, which fits really well into the mix. It's very easy listening and pretty poppy but goddamn it's nice. I would definitely suggest this if you want a nice, chill album for summer days, or would just like to get an easy foot into African music because this is probably the best intro to it that I can think of. 3/5

ihavemidtermin20minutes>David Thomas Broughton - The Complete Guide to Insufficiency >Folk, Drone Apocalypse-core, depression-core, stare-at-nothing-for-five-minutes-as-you-think-about-mortality-core. Brighton's voice is stiff and alien, and his guitar very simply picked and repetitive. What carries the album is not the emotion or songwriting, but the looping: Execution grows to a feverish drone within some sodden chamber, as Broughton's repeated line ("I wouldn't take her to an execution") feels like footsteps towards a demise. Unmarked Grave's chords return to the same sound of the latter half of Ambiguity, as if the previous track was just an afterlife daydream, before stacking on Broughton's wolks to the until they're undecipherable. Tubular bells are struck weakly to the repeated melody, before cutting off into Walking Over You. A panic attack occurs, the guitar literally back-tracking as it attempts to find a place for itself. "As I decay 'neath my blanket of earth / My heart is yet to be satisfied / A seedling grows on my burial ground / Just to wither and die" Broughton sings about a soldier KIA, leaving a grieving lover, yet I can't help but laugh at these lyrics. This guy's miserable to the point that it's humorous. Repeating the lyrics to "emphasize" what he feels seems more like having one of those shitty self-effacing thoughts that linger for 10 minutes. I guess some would say that I haven't experienced the sadness of falling into a routine, beginning to go numb after a interpersonal event or a month of being "stuck". To that, I say, "yes". 5/10

>>72565102 >Kairon IRSE! - Ujubasajuba >Shoegaze, Post Rock What's more impressive than the easy space rock and "playing in a giant open space" vibe from this album, is that the band is able to break down and maintain interest through each of the 5+ minute songs, and play very well between each other. None of them have that loose and holey feeling that some of the other shoegaze albums I've heard have-- then again, that could just be the post rock influences doing their work. For that, I'm glad said influences are here.
The obvious MBV throwback of the opener, the dreamier aspect of Tzar Morei, the contrasting falsetto of Amsterdam, the ending of Swarm, the small and triumphant saxaphone of Rulons and melting clarinet, and the final track's calls of glory-- it melds well. Even with some disparate elements that make a track recognizable, layered upon the other instruments, it would take much more time to dissect each one's function in a minute of time.
This one's going to be a grower, that I can tell.

>Valium Aggelein - Hier kommt der schwartze Mond >Space Rock, Slowcore Duster's first album, released in 1998. The feedback and crackles of guitar flow through one ear to the other.
I want to listen to this out in an empty dark expanse of Arizona Desert; a deep Navy Blue and Ebony sky, perforated by shades of color. Out in the expanse, there would be a distant plateau, but I wouldn't want to walk there. I would lay down on the orange dirt, and shiver while watching the lights in the sky glide onward.
Some mile away, a great construct vaguely shaped like an animal, quadripedal, would slowly stalk the land. Sporadic blazes of red appear in my peripheral vision. I can hear it howl and murmur to itself, but pay it no mind.

Nation of Ulysses - Plays Pretty for Baby It's ok, it's like Fugazi only not interesting and kinda pretentious because they read edgy poetry in the middle of their live shows, who the fuck does that at a punk show, that's not punk, that's so intellectual establishment man Fugazi - Steady Diet of Nothing It's like Fugazi, only not interesting and they don't get a 5 because the band is actually Fugazi Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsys Hendrix is the most underrated of the overrated things in music. Like there's certainly a reason he's recognised as one of if not the best guitarists of all time by everyone and their mother and their mother's dog, he does tasty, bluesy jams man. Oxbow - Serenade in Red Like, Oxbow is fine and all, but why does everyone really really like them, it's a serviceable noise rock record with a dude that yells on it. [Disclaimer, have only listened to this and The Evil Heat] The Millenium - Begin Ahhhh so fucking comfy, like it's just so happy, immediate pick up. Think the last album to do such a thing was Strawberry Jam waaaay back when I was 16. This is also really ahead of it's time, like the first track could almost be a hip hop instrumental. What next

lol mini-review dump>戸張大輔 - ギター It's fucking good bitch. Put these sounds in your ears or die. 8 In all honesty though, I find myself thinking a lot of "avant-folk" are just songs that start out as regular-ass folk songs that are made shittier, but this guy legit has an interesting and unique style of folk. Really surprising and captivating at times, but I'd be hard pressed to call it consistent. Maybe that's part of the appeal though.>Pekka Pohjola - Visitation Really excited to try out the rest of this guy's discog. What I've heard from him so far has been incredibly consistent and enjoyable. I know /daily/ has a thing about fusion, but know that this feels like a much less pseudo-virtuosic version of "prog" if you could even call it that. The songwriting is simple, satisfying, and has some of his best songs on it. Would highly rec if you don't consider yourself a purist in the genre. 8>Various Artists - Princess Nicotine: Folk and Pop Music of Myanmar Too many loose tracks, poor recordings, and overall shottyness for me to love the whole thing, but what's amazing here is really incredible. I can't bring myself to dislike something so unique despite all of its obvious flaws. 7>Joe Henderson - Page One The playing is good, well-progressed, and overall fun, but I found myself surprised basically never here. It sounds great, but basically exactly what I thought it would be like. For my money, Mode For Joe is this dude's best (even though I've heard basically none of his stuff). 7>Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider Really consistent and tight songwriting, but it had very few of those "WOW" moments that were packed in "It's a Wonderful Life". I enjoyed what I heard, but if I ever feel in the mood to listen to Sparklehorse, I'm just gonna play the album that has "Gold Days" and "Comfort Me" on it. 7 1/4

>>72567133 >The Coup - Genocide & Juice Less forward-thinking, catchy, and, ya know, GOOD than their next release, but still a pretty worthwhile album if you enjoyed "Steal This Album", but ultimately I can't shake the feeling that it's just their next album but worse.
7
>Death - The Sound of Perseverance Their music has been incredibly tight and consistent. It's slightly complex without being overbearing and too proggy. It starts to drag in a full length release when your sound is slightly limiting, but a pretty good output regardless.
7
>大貫妙子 - Mignonne Not as consistent and fun as Sunshower or Sugar Babe’s release. In fact, there were only really a few of stand-out tracks here at all. But how the hell you gonna hate something this pure? Ya can’t.
6
>Blind Willie McTell - Atlanta Twelve String: Blues Originals Vol. 1 Was actually really surprised by how uninterested I was in this, I'm not sure if the songwriting in this release was THAT much worse than 1927-1933, but something about that release is a hundred times more captivating to me.
6
>大森靖子 - 洗脳 I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it again: A lot of these Japanese prog-pop artists have really good density, layering, and variety in their artists, but very few basic pop sensibilities. They’re really mind blowing at times, but as pop songs most of the time they fail. The opener, track 3, and the closer were all great, but they were exceptions as good pop songs imo.
6
>Dirty Three - Whatever You Love, You Are Suffers from post-rock x slowcore syndrome in some of the worst ways. Pretty, songwriting that's super overblown and unnecessarily elongated. I can't bring myself to dislike it, but what it basically amounts to is just very drawn out pop songs.
6

>>72567149 >Magrudergrind - s/t I'm starting to think less and less that I "like grindcore" and instead like a handful of good grindcore albums. There were maybe a handful of good songs on this, and I loved how tight and fast-flowing it was, but I didn't find myself liking a single song after track 8.
5
>Taku Sugimoto - Opposite In the spirit of onkyo, always captivating, occasionally surprising, and never satisfying. You’d have to be much more into free improv to get a kick out of this.
5
>Pauline Oliveros - Accordion & Voice Her voice is incredible, and as a concept I really like this. However, the accordion’s timbre I don’t think works in the slightest as a drone instrument. In fact, I think it’s probably one of the worst things you could use for this format. It’s so breathe-y, and the fact that every few minutes it stops for a fraction of a second really takes me out of an otherwise pretty atmospheric release, albeit conceptually flawed to my ears.
5
>The Chameleons - John Peel Sessions Someone needs to tell me the appeal of Peel Session right the fuck now. The Chameleons first few albums are impeccable and the song choice here is great, but literally every one of these is just a worse version of an already existing song. Jesus christ. I find that with a few notable exceptions, that's pretty much every Peel Session. There's some damn good bands on Peel Sessions, I just find them to be pretty much worthless recordings.
4
>Sesame Street - Born to Add Lol. I liked Bert’s Blockbusters more than I thought than I would, but I didn’t LOVE it like I expected. It was innocent, fun, and it made me smile a lot, so how could I hate it. This album was much less charming, and just kinda dumb in a way that wasn’t really fun or enjoyable. Completely skippable but I doubt you were interested in the first place.

Ingmar Bergman - Persona [1966] Pretty nice for the first 40 minutes, but after the letter it goes downhill. I would have preferred it much more if Elizabeth's reason for her willing mutism wasn't revealed at all, but the way it is I think the last part of the film is messy, even if I get what it's going for. Isn't as amazing as it's pushed to be but it's a cool watch. 6.5

4
>Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis I really couldn't find myself getting really into this at all. Idk what it is about southern-soul/pop but it's just unappealing as all hell to me. I didn't hate this in particular, I just found nothing of value in it whatsoever.

my first attempt at rectifying how little miles I've heard Miles Davis - Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (1958)>film score, cool jazz The coolest of all cool jazz. I find that most cool jazz is only "cool" because it's laid-back and simple, which often comes off as corny. This album is cool to the bone, because it's so not corny and timeless. Davis' performance is incredibly emotive, especially on the wonderful opener "Générique", evoking the most vivid noir scenes even without the backing of it's accompanying film. The best tracks are the one's that focus on Davis, some of the more upbeat, full band tracks seem out of place, but Michelot's "Evasion de Julien" bass solo is a nice touch and a nice change of pace. It's also a tad repetitive, but it's less than half an hour, so whatever, it's a great album. 3.0+
natkingcole !e/TFYR9PuA
Kraftwerk - Trans Europa Express (1977)>electronic Incredibly ambitious effort from Kraftwerk. The whole album is essentially one big suite focused around the title track, with many different tracks utilizing the same melodies and themes. This of course makes for some repetition, and the tracks outside of the suite tend to suffer, but the group's brutish minimalism and their wonderful combination of simple synthpop with glorious progressive electronic flourishes turns the suite into one of electronic music's crowning acheivements. It's catchy as sin, too, but I tend to prefer Kraftwerk's poppier releases. 3.0 The Music Tapes - First Imaginary Symphony for Nomad (1999)>lo-fi indie, tape music, indie pop Koster's an incredibly creative, unpretentious musician, but his ideas are often expressed in very scattershot, unfocused manners. The structured tracks on here are incredible, Koster's child-like voice is wonderful as always and his songwriting is nothing to sneeze at either, and the usage of samples on these tracks adds to the wonder and joy the whole album tries to create. The tape music gets on my nerves, though. The structure of these tape pieces really make no sense, with ideas being floated around for split seconds before they're taken away. None of the ideas presented here stick and it makes for an infuriatingly hectit records with some high points. 2.5-

BOY
Based on that, I would recommend everything Zappa made from Freak Out! to Weasels ripped my flesh.
Freak Out has the same kind of humor and proto-progressive/conceptual vibe that comes from Absolutely Free and is incredibly consistent.
We're Only in It for the Money is probably the most experimental of the Mothers' albums. It fuses rock, concrete, Doo-Wop, etc and goes everywhere at once. It's pretty insane, but not everyone's cup of tea.
Lumpy Gravy is a bit similar in WOII4TM's sound collage, but with more spoken-word sections and a bit of Avant-Garde/Third Stream jazz thrown in.
Uncle Meat is everything music was meant to be and nothing more. Originally a film soundtrack, it culminates experimental rock, avant-garde jazz, musical concrete. It builds up your expectations and immediately shatters them. I think it's impossible to go through Uncle Meat without saying "Wait, what?" at least a few times.
Hot Rats is probably Zappa's most accessible from this era, and is mostly Jazz-Rock fusion/prog. Peaches En Regalia is one of the best songs ever made and the rest is pretty damn good too.
Burnt Weeny Sandwich uses more Doo-Wop and Jazz Rock. It's pretty damn good, but far from his best. Little House I Used to Live In is, I would argue, one of his finest pieces. In a lot of ways is an Uncle Meat lite.
Weasels Ripped My Flesh has more staight-forward experimentation, a mix of free jazz, noise, blues and everything in between. Not quite Uncle Meat levels of insane but it's for sure out there.
Don't go into his comedy rock era though. Please.

RC Sucession's Rhapsody is a pretty standard arena bluesy rock record. It features a collection of energetically performed yet entirely generic rock n' roll tunes, with a few occasional highlights such as the catchy, reggae-esque baseline on the third track, and a riff completely stolen from the Peter Gunn theme on the fourth. The musicians certainly don't do a bad job with the material, all quite proficient at their instruments, but the whole thing is ultimately so forgettable that it's hard to care. 4- The Blue Hearts' self titled debut contains twelve catchy, but quite standard power pop punk tunes that are pleasant and fun, but ultimately not particularly memorable. It is elevated somewhat, however, by just how much fun you can tell that these guys had while recording this, the incredibly passionate vocalist bringing a smile to my face in a couple occasions. However, there isn't anything here that isn't done better by the Ramones or the Descendants, and the whole time listening made me just want to listen to them instead more than anything else. 5- There are very few albums that I can name that are more purely fun that Yellow Magic Orchestra's Solid State Survivor. This record is a wonderfully dated compendium of (incredibly influential) synth pop disco cheese. Songs like Technopolis, Rydeen, and Behind the Mask are some of my favorite genre, and I find myself going back to YMO much more than I do with, say, Kraftwerk. However, the album is kept from greatness by the ill-advised cover of the Beatles' Day Tripper, and the two more moody electronic tracks, Castalia and Insomnia, while certainly good in their own right, don't fit on the album at all. This isn't the first time I've listened to Solid State Survivor, and it probably won't be the last. 7+

Bob James Trio - Explosions>Free Jazz, Tape Music A statement for the sake of making a statement. James' style of free jazz / improv is often interesting on it's own, but the execution of mixing that with tape manipulation comes off sloppy. The tape tracks are an entirely separate layer in the mix, and not coordinated at all with the trio's playing. The tapes alone come across very amateurish, especially the stereo panning in the first half of the album. Whatever great ideas the jazzmen had in their playing gets buried in the mix, and the atmosphere feels contrived rather than genuine. The compositions are also a little lacking, and the players often stumble outside the realms of interplay, using the background noise as a crutch. Certainly an interesting entry into the ESP discography, but not one that stands the test of time. 6.0 / 10 Crass - Yes Sir, I Will Probably the most balls-to-the-wall punk I've ever heard, shit's dialled up to 11 almost the whole time less some quiet bridging 'tracks' for effect. Despite listening to this with my eyes closed and fully focused on the music, I still feel like I missed 95% of the nuances in the music. The album is screamed into existence and mixed by someone with extreme tinnitus, so pulling out even individual instruments is a mental workout. I definitely enjoyed it though, and even with it's brazenly political lyrics and cacophonous instrumentation it's still a ton of fun. Will be revisiting. 7.5+ /10

My record vendor here has an OG Penis Envy for $40 that I've had to look at every fuggin time I go there.
Will probably try to jew him down to $30 next time I go.

http://daily-mu.blogspot.com/p/welcome.html Made a quick/simple template for the new /daily/ site. I pretty much copied what was on the old site but I'll be making some changes/trying to keep it up to date. Gotta get used to Blogger though t b h
If anyone wants to be added as an editor, shoot me a message on RYM and I can add your email
But any suggestions? Any ideas for the background image? I was also thinking of including the /daily/ covers in another tab if you guys want

That's a wrap for the top /daily/core, now time to get to the real fun, starting with fish. Not sure if I should write my thoughts about the things I've heard before doing this chart, a lot of it will be youtube comment tier "reviews". >不失者 [Fushitsusha] - 1st Fucking AMAZING. This is the first LRD-esque album I've listened to that's not from LRD. I loved everything about it - the blues parts, the sharp noisy guitar solos, the haunting vocals.. fuuuuuck. For some reason this aesthetic appeals so much to me. Highlights are 好きにすればいい (Suki ni Sureba Ii) and the second half of the last track. What a perfect way to close this set. 4.5/5>The Cornell Lab of Ornithology - Voices of North American Owls I mean idk, it's just field recordings of owls. How am I supposed to rate this? I personally don't necessarily love the sound of them, but it was interesting to hear all the variety. I also do in general enjoy the sound of nature. 3/5

Ran Blake - Ran Blake Plays Solo Piano>Jazz Nothing particularly bad about this album, but it’s lacking in most regards. Blake does not put forth a very exploratory play style (especially for the ESP label), and also fails on the fronts of being catchy, groovy or emotionally resonant. The rhythm is a little sloppy at times, and that doesn’t feel like an aesthetic choice. The improvisational passages are frequently directionless, particularly on Blake’s own compositions, which comprise 4 of the 10 tracks. The remaining tracks are reworked standards, of which care is taken to vary up the structure, but the solo structure fails to capture the highs of the pieces or remain interesting through the play time. 5.0 /10

Eikichi Yazawa's Goldrush is another pleasant, yet not exceptional album. This record is more purely pop than the other releases on this list that I've heard so far, most comparable to Kazemachi Roman. However, unlike Happy End, Yazawa is pretty damn funky. It's reminiscent of western pop of around the same time, though it never matches up to the best of the era. The fifth track, though, is a genuinely great jam, and I can see myself returning to it whether or not I do the same for the rest of the album. It is fun background music, and certainly pleasing to the ears. The cover is fucking incredible, though. 6
