So I listened to the first three of Satriani's albums a little while back and found myself bored, because while he WAS a great guitar player, it didn't matter because the rest of the music around him was boring. It's like a solo singer who's an amazing singer, but they have like little tinker-toy synths to complement their voice (Whitney Houston). That and the melodies were generally dull and unimaginative. So I jump ahead to this, which is well into the 90s, and it's more of the same. Fuck.

>Sufjan Stevens - Michigan You know what I thought about this when I first heard it? Poor's man Illinois. Seriously, the great arrangements, folk ballads, interludes, some moving rhythms, it even starts with a piano and Sufjan's voice just like Illinois! That was really stupid of me. Even if the two share a lot of similarities, they are actually entirely different projects: Illinois is grand, majestic, baroque, intense! Michigan is much more calm, melancholic, quiet: it rarely makes you jam hard like the former does, it's more like an album to listen to in the dark night before sleeping, in a tiny house outside the city. Don't worry, it's relaxed only in the feeling, and not too much in the sound: the big walls of sounds are still here, and this time they sound bigger than ever. The writing and mixing makes all the instrument coexist in the same space, making them melt together to create pleasing (read: orgasmic) sound masses. Since it's a (relatively) simple album the songwriting isn't as complex as some other Sufjan's works, but it still isn't predictable and for sure it isn't afraid to throw some twists here and there, could they be climaxes, unexpected reincorporation, sudden switches of verses and all that jazz. The cure for details is immense, like in any other Sufjan compositions: every instrument plays very originally, and the songs are full of little tiny changes and variations, which make them more enjoyable than how already are, and they work as a reward for your active listening. It should be obvious that Michigan is full of emotions, and it's ready to make you feel something. Songs like "Romulus" are simply heart breaking, and the general vibe is melancholic, but also serene in a strange way. One of the best feelings if you ask me.
It helps that the quality of the mixing is crystal clear, letting you hear all of the sounds and also giving them presence and making them really beautiful.
Michigan is surely a very enjoyable album, and despite not being perfect, it's not that far away from that achievement.

>Janine Jansen; Antonio Pappano: London Symphony Orchestra / Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia - Brahms: Violin Concerto / Bartók: Violin Concerto No. 1 Brahms should never (or rarely) shimmer, so instead Jansen makes it positively gleam. The virtuosity in this piece is in disguising the difficulty rather than communicating it, and she does so beautifully. The real fire comes with the finale of the Bartók, which the best I've heard, albeit compromised by an opening movement altogether too transparent for me. Santa Cecilia bring the warmth as usual.

>Tengry Lab - Tpaнccибиpcкий Tpaнc (Transsiberian Trance) This is an interesting album from a Novosibirsk band. Describing it is sort of difficult but if I had to shoot, I’d say it’s like a psychedelic folk/post-rock/post-punk/straight-up pop crossover with throat singing. Jew's harp and beat boxing (which reminded me of Кoммyнизм for a second) are heavy on this album. Occasional kvlt riffs pop up which sound fucking surreal next to the throat singing. There were times when the clean post-rockish guitar sounded boring, but there’s plenty of interesting things going on to distract you. The lyrics are mostly concentrated on shamanic themes and the Siberian life. Freezing surroundings, starshine, wild horses and more! Very fitting to the musical component. Check this record out! The band’s main goal is to revive the Siberian /trad/ with rock elements and they did well. It does give off a retro-vibe at times but I dig it a lot! 7+/10 Favorite Track: Meтpo Least Favourite: Пepeзимoвaть

>modern classical, symphony A fair amount of kindasorta irritating and 2deep4me atonal segments, but these sections are still pretty pleasing. The best part of this album is the dynamics between these quiter, noodly, atonal sections and the bombastic, Wagner-esque symphonic sections. These make the entire album worthwhile, even if the atonal bits may be kinda hard to sit through to get to the really good bits.

Leon Redbone - On the Track (1967)
>dixieland, ragtime, american folk music Comes off more like a biting parody of old-timey american folk music than a loving tribute to it. That's the problem with a lot of music like this though (early Holy Modal Rounders, Old Crow Medicine Show), music like this needs grit, it needs legitimacy, it needs to be a portrait of the podunk, low-income 1920s town it was recorded in. This sounds like an affluent dude who likes Elizabeth Cotten and Scott Joplin recording some boring tunes he wrote himself. And the melodies are all incredibly simple and unmemorable, Redbone's affectedly old voice (the man was 26, no 26 year old's voice sounds like that) just tries /way/ too hard, and every song sounds the same and the pacing of the album makes it feel like its 2 hours instead of 40 minutes.

Nine years into this band's discography, so far so good! I heard that around 2000 the band is basically just Ed Wynne (yes, that's his name), but still, that could be a solid fifteen years. Or who knows, maybe the "band" is still good from that point on. Admittedly these guys don't really have a lot of growth for the time they've been around (from what I've heard), they found their psych/dub/prog/electronic/world music mix and stuck with it, but it's a very nice sound. It can be in the background or you can blast it through the house, a lot of texture in here.

>>61713417 I disagree. I feel like World of Tomorrow, if anything, proves that Hertzfeldt doesn't rely wholly on babby's first existentialism to create a touching and still somewhat thoughtful film. freeforming it up Sir Richard Bishop - While My Guitar Violently Bleeds (2007)>american primitivism, free folk Worth it for the final track, and nothing else, honestly. "Zurvan" is some pretty so-so standard primitivism/Fahey worship. Enjoyable, mostly because I love primitivism, but there's absolutely nothing special about it. "Smashana" is some more electric free improv, the guitar tone is nice but there's really nothing here of substance, it would've worked better as an interlude or an intro a track. But "Mahavidya" is good stuff. Incredibly hyptonizing and it utilizes its 25 minute run time well. 2.5+ Ulver - Nattens madrigal: Aatte hymne til ulven i manden (1997)>black metal Yeah, Ulver don't do this super raw Darkthrone-esque black metal very well. The best part of Bergtatt is its dynamics, the atmospheric BM, the pagan BM, the folk metal, the dark folk, they all combine in a spectacular way. This is just 40 minutes of pure black metal with some really short folky ambient interludes. Its good black metal, but Ulver can do so much better. 2.5+

>LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem This is exactly the kind of record that I would play in a party full of hipsters like me. Groovy drums! Funky basslines! Catchy melodies! Move your body! Dance 'till morning! Goddamn this is so fun! James Murphy is one sly fox: not only he builds perfect grooves and compose some of the catchiest melodies you'll ever ear, he also makes his music incredibly complex and interesting to analyze. So complex that I listened to this album 3 times before writing this review, just to be sure I grasped everything. I still am not sure that I understood all of the stuff that happens here. I should also mention that this record is 100 minutes long. And I've listened to it 3 times. And I've enjoyed each one. The songwriting is marvelous: the structures are minimal, based almost totally on a single melodic moment. All the instruments have the job to make the track follow its path, with variations, subtle changes, alterations; they get layered one upon another creating orgies of sounds, climaxes, build ups, making the dynamics move, use them in the best way possible. Every song has a different structure from the others: some just build up until the end, other explodes, some remain on the same level, some are full of climaxes, some others end in a chaotic sound mess, and so on. The attention putted on little details is almost unbelievable, because not only everything fits its contest, but all the arrangements are so well written that, if not listening actively, you won't notice all the changes that are happening just under your nose. Ok, even if you listen actively you won't notice all the changes that are happening under your nose, because they are so many and most of the times they are so subtle. This means that every track constantly evolves, constantly changes, making this very, very enjoyable and never boring. Remember when I said that I listened to this 3 times and I was never annoyed? Here's why. [1/2]

James Murphy is unbelievably versatile, and if you haven't noticed that in its other two albums, you will notice it here: we have everything that ranges from house, to punk bits, to softer rock ballads, to electro jams, to bass focused compositions, the list could go on.
Yes, they all sound similar, but they never sound the same. You know what that means? That means that Murphy's writing is coherent and consistent. That's another reason why this album works so well.
This is probably the funniest thing that LCD Soundsystem has ever putted out.
Not only that, but under that layer of enjoyability, we have enough material to maintain concentrated and on the edge of your seat.
It would seriously make me and all those hipsters at that party really happy.

pg.99 - document #8 So I've heard Pygmy Lush's Bitter River (an album from this band's side project) and thought it was pretty cool! This is uh, a little different, though. In a good way! document #8 has some really tight drumming and a great atmosphere. This album can be fast and aggressive and then slow down and sound really haunting. It's a real rollercoaster! Sometimes the change of pace is a little abrupt. I don't like the way the album ends at all. The last song is unsatisfying and kind of ruins the mood. I feel like it would have been better as the second track, so that way the album would have gotten progressively darker. It also ends like a Rock Band song pfff. But overall, this doesn't take too much away from a very enjoyable record! 7/10 What next?

I'd give it a higher rating but it's not really something mind-blowing, it's just very good.
turns out the only way to win in my tourneys is to be the second album lol
Since eldurrson didn't give me a rec, talking cat bob can come back to the tourney if he recs something by tomorrow.

I listened to Milk Time and loved it, it's still up on my top 50, and then I forgot about the other two albums. Will definitely check those out soon.
Also, who else is hyped as shit for Painting With?
The Deakin solo album is allegedly also coming out next month.
