Remember when Brian Wilson met John Lennon?

He doesn't either

>I was sitting backstage after the 1974 Grammys with Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s lyricist) and John Lennon. This was when Brian was really having some mental issues. During the course of the conversation, I kept seeing Brian out of the corner of my eye, just kind of staring at us from different angles. Finally, he came up to the table, bent down and whispered in my ear ‘Hey Alice, introduce me to John Lennon.’ I couldn’t BELIEVE that these two men had never met! They were virtually neck and neck in the 60’s as the greatest bands on the planet, and I’m SURE they must have crossed paths at some point. But then I thought to myself, ‘Wow, if they REALLY have never met, I’m going to be the one to introduce them and become a part of rock history!’ So I merely said, ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, this is Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was very cordial and polite, saying things like ‘Hello Brian, I’ve always wanted to meet you. I’ve always admired your work, and Paul and I considered Pet Sounds one of the best albums ever made.’ Brian thanked him and walked away, at which point Lennon went right back to his conversation like nothing had happened. About ten minutes later, Brian came by our table again, leaned down and whispered something to Bernie, and all of a sudden, Bernie was saying ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was just as cordial and polite as the first time, saying essentially the same thing about always wanting to meet him. As soon as Brian walked away, John looked at both of us and casually said in his typical Liverpudlian accent, ‘I’ve met him hundreds of times. He’s not well, you know.

I saw them 2 or 3 years ago, it was mostly a sad experience. Brian Wilson had this dead look in his eyes when he sat by the piano the entire night, at many times he neither sang nor played the piano but simply looked off to the side like he didn't want to be there, his voice was also almost completely gone, hearing him sing lead on I Just Wasn't Made For These Times was heartwrenching for the wrong reasons.
The other guys barely sung either, the backing band did almost all of the lead singing while the beach boys did backup vocals you could barely hear, I'm not even sure their instruments were plugged in.
Mike Love was also sad to see, he said stuff like "we might be in our 70s now, but we still like to look at young cute girls", like wtf why would you say that. All of his talk on stage was cringeworthy and made them seem like a caricature of a washed up boy band who got too old.

Honestly, it was cool to have seen them once, but I wouldn't go again when this is what it's like.

I remember reading this and had to go find it to post it.

(from Bob Dylan's Chronicles)

>In the 60s, legacies were canonized very fast. You could just tell who was going to be hanging around in the conversations of critics and public in the next decades. Well, Brian Wilson was one who got the other end of the deal. Everyone knew that he had a self-imposed artistic rivalry with John and The Beatles, but he had lost. I'll always think of him as a great songwriter and a saintly soul, though it was apparent to Brian that his legacy was going to be shadowed by The Beatles. One of these parties I was at, Brian was there, and he wanted to show us a new song he'd written. He sat at the piano and began singing with that wonderful, crystal voice, and then the song ended. Before anyone else could speak, some house guest said it sounded a lot like "Nowhere Man" and Brian, looking off in the distance, said "Does it?" He started the chords of Nowhere Man and sung very softly those lyrics and his smooth voice started cracking. Though we couldn't see his face, we all knew he was beginning to weep. I just felt such empathy in that moment for this poor guy who everyone knew was a great writer. It was like Lennon wrote the song straight from Brian's soul. That's what was so powerful about that moment to me.

He did, but only due to how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success. The Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worthy of being saved.
