Is lo-fi music simlar to artists keeping their art ironically bad to avoid criticism? Wouldn't an artist who is truly proud of their work keep their music unaltered?

I know this is bait, but it's an interesting topic. lo-fi actually comes from keeping your music unaltered.
It takes lots of tricks and gadgets in post production to give it that studio sound.

I'm not trying to bait, i'm genuinely curious. Why would an artists purposefully use shitty recording equipment. thats like making a comic using only mspaint

>trying to start a music discussion is now considered bait
This word has truly lost all meaning.

it isn't
it's more like painting with very evident brushes. it's an aesthetical apropriation of something that's usually considered a flaw, but it can still be done either well or poorly

true, but I think OP is referring to more deliberately lo-fi recordings or musicians who consciously use really shitty recording devices w/ no mastering and like cassette only releases or something (think old lesser known Night People releases).

and eh for me super fuzzy and fucked recordings can feel more aurally pleasurable, and it won't necessarily change my opinion of the music too much, at least consciously. no reason for it not to be an aesthetic choice, as strange as it might scene. incredibly overdriven/squared recordings can sound super lo-fi even if they're not necessarily shittily recorded just as a decision on the like surface sound or whatever of the music. no reason to assume the musician is trying to hide something as i see it. its like the anti sound design approach to sound design

Actually, making a comic only using mspaint is more similar to making music using nothing but a single DAW.
Using shitty recording equipment would be like making your own dyes and using an animal skin canvas.

It's mostly because bands/artists are incapable of making something well produced.
