Not even trying to defend LGBT rights etc. but there have been many cultures and even times in history when the masculine/feminine divide was much less tied to sex as it is today. You obviously can't go from being a man to being a woman, but you can go from being, for all intents and purposes in society, from being masculine to being feminine.
