I've recently been obsessed with Hotline Miami and the movie Drive. What are some 80s synth-pop records that are similar to the sounds of these things?

The thing is that most 80s synthpop actually does NOT sound like Kavinsky etc. at all. It's nowhere near as heavy and dark sounding and lacks many production techniques these new artists use.

The things that come the closest are actually soundtracks, so start digging through those b action movies of the era and hope you find something that pleases you. Dance and pop music in the 80s was much lighter in atmosphere, so you're bound to be disappointed if you expect it to sound anything like Kavinsky. The gothic synth pop bands obviously have a darker sound but they don't sound as "cool" as the 2000s artists.

The whole 80s synth revival thing is about being nostalgic towards a musical style that never really happened. Which isn't a bad thing, but it's really misleading.

That's because he's not synth-pop you idiot

Kavinsky borrows more form rock music than pop. He's influenced by 80s synth guys like Kano. He also has elements of horror music (John Carpenter in particular) in his stuff.

There is nothing "pop" about Kavinsky.
