I've never really paid much attention to lyrics in music. However, lately I've been getting into poetry and whatnot so I'd like to get some recommendations for good lyrical music.

Joanna Newsom
I don't know another artist who is so playful with her use of language

Joni Mitchell
Her lyrics just match so well with the sounds she is making, especially on Blue

Everyone is going to list hip hop because it's "poetry in rhythm" or something but it's all pretty garbage, the culture and amount of intellect it represents is shit and low respectively.

If anything, stick to poetry. The focus is fully on the art being expressed in the form you're paying attention

I agree with this sentiment. I've never heard hip hop that had genuinely above 6/10 lyrics (compared to things like poetry).

Joanna Newsom is pretty decent though

Tbh I've been listening to a lot of hip hop over the last few months and I really enjoy it, but I was hoping mainly for non-hip hop recs in this thread.

I've never heard any music that's had great lyrics compared to pure poetry.
