I'm seriously wondering, it's definitely better than Lizard, and honestly it's not really that odd or weird by KC standards. Peter Sinfield is a MUCH better vocalist than Gordon Haskell, and the instrumentals were gaining that gripping feeling and style that they would master with Red. There isn't really a wasted track here as far as I'm concerned, not even The Letters or Ladies of the Road which typically in an album like this may be bad apples, but neither one really does.

Also King Crimson discussion in general.

I've never seen Islands get much love outside /mu/. I don't like it personally.

Because it's uninspired and the shitty vocalist makes everything on it cheesy as hell. The only exception is Sailor's Tale, one of the best tracks by King Crimson overall.

>> No.55429485

This and Beat are their weakest albums.

Cheesy? I'll be honest in that it seems like he's a bit more prototypical, but it's better than the shit Gordon Haskell pulled on Lizard with the scattershot lyrics, and straight up annoying distortion on Happy Family.

>but it's better than the shit Gordon Haskell pulled on Lizard

no way, Haskell was their best vocalist by far

Lets just agree that even their "worse" albums are not as bad as really bad bands

I don't even see how. He didn't seem like the type of person who should be on the mic, let alone someone fronting King Crimson. The dude couldn't hold a note if he tried.

Agreed.

I suppose. Lizard had at least 2 tracks I'd like to hear on repeat, and the infamous In the Wake of Poseidon even had several tracks which are worth listening to even if you hate the fact that it's basically a rehash.

>> No.55429780

Yup, not even close to being "really" bad, just not as good

>> No.55429805

I think Islands is better than Lizard as well, mainly because of Sailor's Tale. I still think the title track on Lizard is better than Islands', though.

>>55429736
I think it can be a little unfair to write off ITWOP as 'ITCOCK 2.0'. It does sound similar, sure, but I've always loved Pictures of A City, Peace- A Theme is a pretty nice guitar piece, Cat Food is some nice jazzy stuff and Devil's Triangle is one of my favourite King Crimson songs.

>> No.55429855

Sounds more classical than rock, which probably put people off.

>> No.55429859

>>55429405
Best of their symphonic period easily. Red, Larks' Tongues and Discipline are all better though.

King Crimson ripped this off on In The Court (Song)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBgV9WSFT_c
>The Gun - Rat Race (1968)

They also had some influences from this other song of them on 21st Century Schizoid Man
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFyEjUXGE2I
>The Gun - Race With The Devil

and from Frank Zappa's Invocation & Ritual Dance of the Young Pumpkin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb1oAmRhKLE

Have you found any other "Proto-Crimson" songs?

>>55429805
Those are the exact tracks that I enjoy from it, Pictures of City is probably my favorite of the bunch. The structure feels almost exact after a few tracks, which I think may have been less obvious if they moved Catfood to the other side, moving Cadence and Cascade into its place although I'm not sure how it would affect things. When they started doing the drum hits from Epitaph in Poseidon though, that was about the point where I just went "Fucking hell this really is a rehash".

>> No.55430012

>>55429885
I think that first song sounds much more like Epitaph than TCOTCK. And I can hear some similarities, but it's not even close to being a rip off.

I wasn't serious about the rip off thing.
But do you think it's possible King Crimson listened to them and were influenced by them?

>>55430021
Yeah, it's awesome!

>> No.55430197

>>55429987
Yeah, the song structure and order on the album pretty much mimics ITCOCK's. It does have previously used ideas in there, but there's no way it's a complete rehash as some say. It's still worth listening to, even if just for those tracks I mentioned. I guess they couldn't really come up with songs that were completely original because of the near disbanding of the group at the time and having to pretty much reform the group from scratch.

Because King Crimson is a band of white males, who possess the power to oppress womyn. In fact, progressive rock is the whitest genre of all. When a white progressive rock artist sings of groupies, he's committing the sins of a thousand "rape a bitch nigga" African-American rappers.

Pretty sure King Crimson has always received mixed reviews due to the controversial and inaccessible nature of their music

Red, perhaps, since it was the last of their 70s run and since they were established at that point. The debut? Nope, it was definitely scrutinized by a decent number of critics at the time, even if it's unanimously considered a classic now
