55346876 No.55346876 [Reply] [Original]

I've recently been hanging with a girl who really loves the classics (knows the shit out of Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and David Bowie) and she gave me a list of ~50 albums to listen to. Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, CCR, Jefferson Airplane etc.

I'm slugging through Sticky Fingers by the Rolling Stones right now and its painfully boring. Is it that I have developed such a scattered taste in music that I can't enjoy vanilla rock or is it really not that great?

Classic prog might not be great or the best, but at least it strove to make Rock more than some shitty crowdpleasing groove fest.

Rock hasn't evolved past the 60's. It has made nothing of artistic worth since about the 60's/70's. It's all now derivative.

Other music has moved on. Rock is stuck BEHIND its past.

For comparison, look at classical music: not once in the past 50-100 years has it remained static. Neoclassicism to Serialism to Minimalism to "Post-Minimalism" to God knows what.

Rock has been recycling the same brand(s) of music since the 60's. TMR is a masterpiece because it was one of the few Rock records that was relatively current, relatively of-its-time in art. As with Faust.

But since then Rock has just fallen further and further behind.

But what more can you expect from *POPULAR* music?

Classic rock was a revolution in music in both the 50's, and then later in the 60's.It became less about largely being background music, and more about listening closely to relateable music. That's what makes it art, is when people stop playing it, and actually listen. Any music can defined as art. It's a form of expression and telling a story, or relating to the consumer. That's art. It doesn't have to be weird or deep or complex to be art. We just have to let it reach out to us.

>Any music can defined as art. It's a form of expression and telling a story, or relating to the consumer.
I'm not saying it's not art, that would be stupid.
But it's low art. It's out of step with the art world.
That's why albums like TMR and Faust are amazingly artful: they were actually of their time. They weren't derivative records like Kid A, they were original yet still knowledgeably referential (for instance, how Beefheart chants "Come Out to Show Them").
