So I've finally decided to listen to the new Sufjan Stevens LP and hey why not everybody share their first impressions?
Right now: Light 7. It'll probably grow on me into a decent 9.

Its my favorite Suf album. I listened to Illinois and Age of Adz (as well as the Christmas albums this past Christmas) and I liked them but never really listened to them.

But I can't stop listening to C&L. Every time I listen to it I cant not tear up a bit. My personal AOTY so far.

There really isn't a track I don't enjoy other than Blue Bucket of Gold. It's definitely a 5/5 for me.

>> No.55341339

I'm real into it. Started at a 9, now that i've sat with it longer a strong 7.

Fav tracks: Death with dignity, Eugene, The Only thing

least fav:drawn to blood,

It ain't very dynamic though and I think thats a real strength sufjan has had on other albums, a lot of high energy manic stuff contrasting with the stripped down numbers. I dig the atmospheric Bon Iver bits though.

5/5 means perfect though....
and you just said that you don't enjoy one of the songs....

>> No.55341355

Already listened to it several times. 7/10.

>> No.55341396

Its lack of variety honestly does not bother me in the slightest and fits well with the themes on the album as well as the overarching narrative. I think it's easily his strongest songwriting by far, too.

Carrie & Lowell > Illinois = Age of Adz > Seven Swans > All Delighted People > Michigan > Enjoy Your Rabbit > A Sun Came

Each of his albums is great though.

>> No.55341410

Can't get enough of it at the moment.
As one who generally prefers Illinois and Michigan to Age of Adz, this felt like a pleasant return to form in my opinion.

>> No.55342675

Pretty much this exactly. Glad I'm not the only person who noticed the Bon Iver similarities in some of the more ambient bits. Them slide guitars. Solid 7.

You need to round things. A 96/100 would certainly be a 5/5. Otherwise your 5-point distribution makes no sense, it would be basically a 3-digit distribution (you would be weighted against ever using 0 and 5).

I think this is great. This and All Delighted People are maybe my two favorite Sufjan releases.

>> No.55344014

7.5

Favs: Death with dignity, The only thing, all of me wants all of you

Its fuckin disgusting people rate this anywhere near Illinois

Just managed to get tickets to see Sufjan in the UK. His show sold out almost immediately.

I love sufjan but he's not a good singer. The live performances of this album so far is proof of this.

I love the music but the lyrics go over my head

>> No.55345507

One of the less interesting Sufjan albums, a huge step down from the brilliance that was Age of Adz. Very little variation on the album, songwriting and production didn't do much for me either.

Favorite tracks are Death with Dignity, Should Have Known Better and No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross

It's really good but I still prefer Michigan, Illinois, Seven Swans, and Age of Adz. Just needs to grow on me more, I think. I'm loving Should Have Known Better, John My Beloved, and Blue Bucket of Gold.

After letting the hype come down I'd say it's a good 7. An album based almost entirely on feels is good for a while, but the actual music lets it down (although those ambient sections are sublime).
I get the lyrics are the focus, but the music shouldn't be watered down because of that.
Great lyrics, OK instrumentation.

When I saw him live, Blue Bucket of Gold was amazing, he adds like an 8-minute freakout at the end that builds up like crazy and is really intense. I'm sad that the studio version isn't like that, but I don't think it would ever work well being recorded.

>> No.55348152

>>55348110
Nah, I think they could have recorded the live version (and should have, it was fucking rad). Sufjan has already proven his ability to record walls of angry noise (like in Impossible Soul)

>> No.55348197

>>55348152
it's unlikely, but i really hope professionally recorded live versions pop up of the songs that have been changed dramatically for the live shows, like All of Me Wants All of You or Blue Bucket of Gold

>> No.55348243

>>55348197
Yeah, that would be rad. The live versions in general were a lot beefier and more complex than the recorded versions IMO. They did Chicago as an encore but it was arranged to be piano based and spacey sounding and it ended up sounding pretty much exactly like Clocks by Colplay which was pretty funny.

Illinois has some bad songs (Seer, Zombies, Metropolis) that add little. There aren't any bad songs on Carrie and Lowell.
