Rap has to be the most contrived genre of our time. The bands of other genres can be influenced by the same bands and have similar styles. But usually even in those cases no one artist does the exact same thing another artist does. That’s not the case with rap. With rap you get something that sounds basically the same as the other rap artists who came before them. The only thing different about it is the lyrics and the music that they rap over.
If all of this was some elaborate beat poetry thing, where people were doing interesting poetry over a beat then maybe it would be interesting. There’s a lot of really fine poetry in our world, but rap music is not what I would call fine poetry. It’s contrived themes mostly, rappers talking about the hood. That is another contrivance of rap music, it always seems to be about street life. It must be because people in the street are exposed to rap because it relates to them, so the cycle of poor people becoming rappers remains unbroken.
