Well Live '77 is the obvious one but for the real deal go straight to the Double Heads boxset. Best quality recording, additional guitarist who acted as a counterbalance to Mizutani's noise generator and some of the best versions of their songs.

Heavier Than a Death in the Family is just 77 Live with a couple of awful tracks tacked onto it.

Also, Enter the Mirror > Night of the Assassins.

>> No.55322712

>>55322667
77 is a good starting point.

I wouldn't say they are a "conclusion" to music let alone a logical one; I don't think there ever will be. I also think they have a lot better releases than heaver than a death in the family.

>> No.55322714

Is that Alice Glass?

>> No.55322726

>>55322689
Think about it. Their basic song structure and line-up is very rock-n-roll like The rest ventured into a more improvisational area without the "jam band" bullshit. One version of the song has the same backbone but each version of the track is incredibly distinct. Early Fushitsusha is fairly similar but in their later days Haino started adding in crazy electronics, flutes and hurdy gurdies, etc.

Ot's not like you have a choice with this band. Also there are great bootlegs out there, for example Pink Floyd's best stuff is on bootlegs.

My favourites are
>Animal Instinct
Recorded on Animals tour in 1977, has complete Animals and WYWH, bith with extra improvisation, some encores
>Cruel But Fair
WYWH tour 1975, some proto-animals songs, almost complete WYWH, complete DSOTM and absolutely amazing Echoes-encore. Great sound quality, almost like official release

That one early Hamburg concert is good but I can't remember it's name. Who Was Told Not to Spit on the Fan is also good, it's the kast show of Animals tour, the athmosphere is amazing especially considering what happened there. Sadly the sound quality is pretty poor.

Animal Instincts is in the archive, I upped it to mega. Cruel but Fair should be too but if it's not I could try to upload it but my internet connection is pretty bad.

The four-disc box-set Mars Studio 1980 (Phoenix Records, 2012), featuring guitarist Fujio Yamaguchi, is one of the least amateurish documents. The more recordings surfaced, the less relevant the band seemed to be. Most of their music was disposable, an inept imitation of the Velvet Underground occasionally decaying into childish mayhem.

I've always liked this one more. The mixture of their heavier songs and those nice vocal driven soft tunes makes it feel more rewarding (and a little less taxing on my ears). I can see why people prefer the albums that are heavy all the way through though.
