Give me one reason why this isn't The Beatles best album. Just try.

It lacks the cohesion of Pepper and Abbey Road.

>> No.55299645

It's definitely their best in terms of songs but it lacks the cohesion that, say, Sgt. Pepper or Abbey Road has, and it lacks the variety of Revolver or the White Album since MMT is basically all psych/baroque pop.

Side B is a lot better than side A though so it does feel a little "lopsided" when I listen to it. That sort of detracts from the enjoyment a bit because I just start to feel like it'd be nicer to just start on side B.

Also can someone tell me why some people dislike The Fool on the Hill so much? I learned recently that it's not universally adored and I have no idea how. Paul is fucking rad as hell on this album, every single song.

Nah mate. I love Fool on the Hill and IATW, but I never really thought Flying had any place on this record with this many fantastic songs; it's a pretty stale psych rock instrumental as far as I can tell.

And you're out of your mind if you think Lennon and Macca don't BTFO FotH and IATW with Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever.

It always bothers me when people use this insult. Could you dickride Lennon any harder than to use the exact same phrasing he used to shit on Paul's tunes on Sgt. Pepper's? It's not even a legitimate criticism.

She's Leaving Home is just a slice of Eleanor Rigby-esque baroque pop mastery, there's nothing overly cutesy or silly about it. Lovely Rita I can see but it's still too weird, I mean, that outro certainly doesn't lend itself to lowest-common-denominator classification.

>> No.55299909

But what the hell is "granny shit"? How is it inherently bad?

Like, it's an empty criticism. It was empty when Lennon said it and it's empty when you parrot it.

>>55299787
>she's leaving home
>granny shit

Are you out of your mind? Just because the song is from the perspective of two parents doesn't make it granny shit. It's an incredibly poignant song and the arrangement is sublime.

Also how is Lovely Rita granny, whatever that means? Because of Martin's piano part? It's got a ton of great psychedelic moments, and psych at that time was anything but granny shit. "Granny shit" to me would imply something old fashioned sounding and at that point in time psychedelic was the farthest thing from old fashioned.

Wasn't it Ringo who coined the Granny insult to describe Maxwell's Silver Hammer? It was him or John but I can't remember who.

>> No.55299984

Doubtful, given that John had called Obla-Di-Obla-Da granny shit, which predated Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Plus the Lennon quote for ODOD is "paul's granny music shit" and MSH is "_more of_ paul's granny music shit" which implies that he dropped the bomb on ODOD first.

Plus Ringo is an angel and wouldn't say something that rude. W-would he?

I don't think I'd disagree with this statement but I don't really agree either. I think its biggest problem is that it's just not noteworthy at all. It works in the context of the album but that's it, really.

It's not an album, that's why. It was released as an EP soundtrack to the film and they just put a bunch of their singles and unreleased tracks to flesh out an album for America because they didn't like EP's.
