Very difficult. Most consistent is probably tied between Sunflower and Friends. Surf's Up has one of the best songs ever written (Til I Die) and is really solid. 20/20 is incredibly underrated.

First time I listened to Summer Days and Summer Nights, I got this hard for I'm Bugged at my old man. Now I think it's hilarious and one of the best songs on the album. It's so melodramatic and mocks their early career in a really clever way. It's like an extreme of the way Brian was trying to fly under Capitols' radar for the album and still moving forward towards Pet Sounds musically.

Love You is of particular interest because it doesn't rely on SMiLE material. That's why it'd be my choice. Most of the best songs after Pet Sounds were off SMiLE and most of the songs had their best recording first time round.

Not true, mark of a true pleb is opinions like this

all the dennis wilson songs off 20/20 and sunflower, mike love embracing psychedelia kind of on friends, the carl wilson production style on sunflower especially, jack reiley era and beautiful emotional songs off surf''s up or hollan's mt vernon and fairway

also the love you stuff relies on previous material anyway that would have been part of adult child

I'm not sure under what circumstances preferring the SMiLE material could be considered pleb. Its a more conventional opinion I guess?
Songs like Heroes and Villains were overwhelmingly more complex than anything the rest of the Beach Boys ever made. Between the elaborate orchestration/instrumentation, chromatically moving melodies that tend to be really complex and winding, the counter point, the multipart structure with the Cantina section/intro, etc. and the exhibition of how far a pop song can push three chord structure while still maintaining a cohesive and solid flow of ideas that is still really accessible and poppy. That on top of really great lyrics that still fit what must have been a pain of a melody to try and write over.

Yeah. He had a great voice. Even without all the studio production, vocal layering and dense instrumentation behind him.
Thing is though, I'm not sure I'd have been as impressed by a Beach Boys whose sound was defined by stripped back songs and vocals. Brian was a master at making elaborate symphoniesque pop songs. We have people like Donovan for the other stuff.

Well, dealing with vocal harmonies is probably his speciality so I wouldn't take that away from the Beach Boys. It's what defines them after all.

But i'll do anything to hear a full album of tracks like When a Man Needs a Woman where Brian sings with his clear, sweet and powerful voice by himself and without any doubling.

Too bad they're making it into such a Brian vs Landy thing. And making it a love story just feels retarded.

From the trailer, seems like it'll suck but you never know.

>> No.55284347

>>55284187
He certainly did a lot more harm than good.
Big thing about this stuff is though, there isn't one villain. SMiLE collapsed due to multiple problems. Mike Love bullying Van Dyke out of the studio and discouraging Brian was one of them. But the biggest factor was probably the fact that Brian was already unstable before he started taking drugs and would probably have had a breakdown soon enough anyway. Even without other outside forces pushing him to it.

Landy then took an already broken and easily manipulated person and took advantage of him and fucked him up even further.
>>55284249
I do hope they take a bigger look at SMiLE and Pet Sound than it's hinting at and that the whole love story aspect might be being played up to get more attention. Still though, it looks like it's gonna be enjoyable and that it's well made. They could have done a hell of a lot worse.

charged him ridiculous amounts, eventually just doubling his monthly fee every month, loaded him up on drugs, forced him to write songs (which resulted in crap like 15 Big Ones), cut him off from his friends and family, had multiple assistants just follow him around and make sure he didn't do anything funky.

his methods worked, i guess - brian looked very much in great shape after landy was done with him. but his methods were just deplorable and he was an extremely exploitative person.

Just look at the way he's got his arm around him in this interview, the way he talks for Wilson and how Wilson actually looks. And this was in front of a camera. God only knows how much worse it was behind the scenes. The guy just completely hijacked Brian's life and took over every part of it.

It's inaccessible. There are black metal albums which would be more likely to chart than some of the stuff Parks puts out. The melodies are ridiculously winding and complex, song structures are so chopped and screwed that it feels weird to call it pop and it takes influence in it's instrumentation and style from too wide a range with all the Americana, Tin Pan Alley and other folk, art and popular music, Parks' voice is weedy and unusual, he writes really complex lyrics, etc., etc.
That being said, there's little pockets of devotees scattered about the place that love him. It's the kind of music that means a lot to a few people rather than a little to a lot of people.
