Has there ever been a culture that has contributed as little to music as Islam?
| >> | No.55273171 >>55272965 If you think music isn't going to happen just because some say it's haram, you have no idea how religions work. I don't normally go into music from most muslim regions so I don't know their musicians all that well, but I know enough that I can say there are even artists who do music with a heavy islamic devotional bent, like Sami Yusuf.
Plus there's always been an awful lot of music coming out of the sufi tradition, which is a subculture of islam. And there's loads and loads of mainstream pop produced in arabic countries like Egypt and Lebanon - Tamer Hosny is huge, he even worked with Snoop Dogg once - hell even Saudi Arabia has a few pop stars, you just never hear any of it outside of arabic-speaking countries.
Since I'm not that well-versed in muslim musicians, though, I'll just go for three big names: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Zakir Hussain, and, I dunno, Nazia Hassan. |

My whole point in this discussion is that if we focus too much on islam, we're only creating this boogeyman to take the blame, and that does NOT solve the situation.
You act as if we removed islam from the equation, everything would be better, which of course is true, but the underlying problems would still be there. People would still be fucked up. Maybe if you give em education and more choices in life than either growing opium for the invading force in their country, or growing opium for the radical islamists in their country, you will start to see some change. And then you will see islam change too. |
