>There are people on /mu/ right now who have never listened to Tom Waits
>>55272608who?
what do we listen to first by himtoss us a freaking bone here
>>55272625me
Just my opinion but to really get into the man listening to his early work is essential. That pre-lucky strike voice is beautiful.
>memerap kiddies don't know who tom waits iswhat a surprise
>>55272625i tried once, but cringed way to hard to get through it. He sounds like out of tune Disney music
>le fedora manwhy would I listen to this enlightened man's music kek
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK9Zg14M0cINo one knows he actually made simple good music early on.
>>55272608i feel bad for themNighthawks at the Diner for best live album ever
>>55272682That was disgusting
>>55272671>out of tune Disney musicperfect
>>55272697
>>55272642Rain Dogs, It has enough variety that you're bound to find something you like on it while maintaining a consistent level of quality.
>>55272642There's two Tom Waits "timelines", one that starts with Closing Time, his first album, and another that starts with Swordfishtrombones. The early stuff is more traditional piano jazz-rock, the latter is gloomy, low-key music with a lot of different instruments and styles. Those two albums above are both top 10 albums all-time for me, but people usually consider Rain Dogs to be his best.
>>55272608I recognize that it's technically good music but I hate his voice.
>there are people on /mu/ who never listened to Einstuerzende Neubautenhttps://vimeo.com/36556349
>>55272608id like to keep it that way
>>55272608Tom Waits can wait.
One of the best songwriters of all time everyone listen to him now

Well, I feel like telling a relevant story:>>Drinking in brooklyn>>Share a smoke with a redhead in overalls>>She tells me she's a dominatrix>>Dawns on me that she likes me>>Rare realization>>We fuck casually for a few weeks>>She plays early Tom Waits>>We snort amphetamines >>She blows me in her overgrown backyard as the sun comes up>>Stop texting her back>>Inexplicably miss herThats it. Cool story bro
why don't people like this album? i think its awesome. the concept is so cool. tom waits' later stuff always sounded like demented carnie music so it's cool he did a whole album about that
>>55273544Agreed. Before I listened to it, I saw someone going on about how it was the most challenging album they've ever heard (whatever that means). It's really a pretty solid album, although not his best.
>>55273634>I saw someone going on about how it was the most challenging album they've ever heardweird so maybe people don't like it cuz it's his most experimental? that's interesting. what's your favorite by him?
>>55273688I'm not sure if it's necessarily his most experimental, maybe his weirdest. I could definitely see some people being put off by that; although I don't really mind. It's not any worse than Trout Mask Replica. My favorite is probably Rain Dogs partially due to it being the first one I've heard and I pretty much know all the songs by heart at this point.
>>55273544It's a soundtrack album, so people dismiss it as non-canon.
>>55273779By that logic, wouldn't Frank's Wild Years also be non-canon due to being a soundtrack album?
>>55273813Yeah, but Frank had a more personal connection for Waits since that was the name of one of the songs on Swordfishtrombones, so it seems more canonical. Plus, it's more similar to his other music than Black Rider, so it's easy to forget it's somewhat extraneous. People also speak of it fondly because it spawned the song that'd become the Wire's theme song.
>>55272608Fuck off, that can't be true.

Is it weird that Mule Variations is my favorite Waits album?
>>55275173Yes it is weird congratulations
>>55272608Instead of shitposting you could recommend people who haven't listened to Waits where to start.Quit being part of the cancer.
>>55272671Finaly a genre for Tom Waits.
>>55273356Goddamn the feels are hard there, anon.
>>55275225>implying the chemo didn't kill the cancer and the patient
>>55275173Not really, it's considered as his best post-80's album (i prefer Bone Machine tho)
>>55273544To be honest, I have only listened to it like twice, and it was too strange for me at the time, and there is so much other good stuff he's done that I didn't really feel the need to go back to it. but now I'm starting to run out of albums i will probably go back to it..
>Why has no one listened to this guy with like five good songsFor fuck sake OP
>>55277200>with like five good songsHe has at least 5 10/10 albums
>>55272608I listen few things but not impressed.
Tom Waits is just as interesting a musician as he is a man. This is my favorite piece he's been a part of. The shyness and sincerity reminds me of a first date.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49tTzEifY6M
There's something for everyone with Tom Waits. The beautiful. The macabre. Playfulness. This is Tom's playful side, which is the kind I tend towards.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuRfJDYl6Ts
>>55277334Man that's good, I dont know how many times I've watched that, but it never stops being awesome. Obviously that's not completely like how he is in real life, but he does that standoffish asshole thing really welll. If you haven't checked it out, you should watch Fishing With John, the Tom Waits one is really good, and he does a bit more of the self-obsessed curmudgeon thing that he does in Coffee and Cigarettes
>>55277361This I think is what makes his work so enjoyable, there's something not only to suit different people, but different moods. No matter how I'm feeling, there's always some Tom that will suit the mood.
