After being a fan for like 4 years, I really can't imagine them having a vocalist at this point; or ever for that matter. They get the point across effectively enough without vocals. I think it would ruin it if they had Scott Kelly or someone screaming over everything.

That being said, with the song 309, that part where it's kind of like a breakdown in the middle with that ominous ambient guitar wailing in and out, they should have had something extra like another instrument. It's still one of my favorite songs by them but I was waiting for something else other than dat bass part.

I listened to Geneva (my first album of theirs) all the way through yesterday, and found that I was really missing having vocals. It could be incoherent screaming for all I care, but I feel like I need to have vocals of some sort in my music. Maybe prog stuff and instrumentals just aren't for me.

Essentially all you needed to be "black metal" in the those days was to have similar lyrical themes to venom and mercyful fate. These bands were immensely influential to the future of extreme heavy metal music and in a way 2nd wave black metal is a return to extreme metal's roots which are primitive, underproduced and evil heavy metal music.

I guess it would probably depend on who you would call 2nd wave or not.
I've heard people categorize both Celtic Frost and Bathory as either 1st or 2nd wave so I don't even know anymore.

>> No.55152745

>>55152663
I can only see it as a chronological thing.
The 80s had bands like Bathory, Celtic Frost, Master's Hammer, Sarcófago, etc. releasing albums, so I think the black metal sound was already created by the first wave.

>> No.55152880

>>55152745
They still sound vestigially like thrash played fast, the tremolo isn't quite there, the blast beats aren't as relentless. That's were the 2nd wave came and did their thing, they also streamlined the vocal styling.

>> No.55152970

>>55152880
Hey, I'm not gonna deny that the sound evolved and 2nd wave made a clearer definition of that sound, but it's silly to deny the very roots of the black metal sound were already created in the 80s, you can't simply say first wave was just aesthetics.
It's like saying Seven Churches wasn't a death metal album because it was still heavily thrash influenced and didn't have characteristics that other bands developed later.

>> No.55153040

>>55152970
Yeah but if you were to classify those bands now a lot of them would be blackened thrash while the Norwegians made it's own specific brand of black metal with even less influence from other stuff.

Similar to how Black Sabbath started metal but right now are classified as doom metal.

>> No.55153239

>>55153040
I think this will lead to nothing because we're aiming at different things. I just think that even if you argue that 2nd wave bm was more 'pure black metal', the 1st wave already had 'musical black metal' and not just 'aesthetical black metal'

Anyway, I wouldn't call this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdj4FgcjrDI a blackened thrash album, and this is a cornerstone on 1st wave black metal. Also other later black metal like Blasphemy borrows more from bands like Sarcófago, who basically created the sound that Blasphemy and their copycats followed.

I like to think of it this way. During the 80s there really weren't really "black metal" regional scenes going on, although this is very debatable (see south america, esp brazil and maybe germany to some extent). Musically black metal then didn't gravitate to one sound or style of play. In the early 90s, black metal was celebrated by regional scenes like scandinavia, canada, the usa, japan, greece, poland, etc. and this was the time where these places celebrated it in their own ways.

i explained why i like lost horizon - i said they have the best vocalist in the genre, a unique songwriting style, and Highlander (The One) is among my favorite songs ever. when questioned whether i was being serious, all i could prove was my paltry number of last.fm plays. and it is paltry, that was meant as a gesture of humility.

apologies if i offended you.

if i need to elaborate further:
LH's songwriting is very dynamic and takes an interesting approach to incorporating progressive metal influences. Their use of synth is nicely subtle and not overtly symphonic. And their lyrics deal with positivity and self-empowerment, which make them very comforting to listen to when feeling hopeless and powerless.

considering the other shit you posted, i shouldn't be devoting this much effort to a post, but i felt like it, dammit. (also reddit is cool for following band news and other stuff, the "reddit sucks" meme is pretty tiresome.)

Guessing the scribbles are bands you didn't like? Judging by that, feel free to skip right ahead to Iced Earth, Persuader and Orden Ogan. Kamelot is amazing as well though they might not be to your liking, that list just needs Black Halo instead of Epica.

List has a lot of really obscure shit, but is missing a few great popular ones like Pyramaze, Demons & Wizards and Thunderstone.

And how is this shit for beginners? I bet most people here haven't heard of half of those bands. I sure as fuck haven't.

I have a question

Am I supposed to understand the lyrics of (most) metal tracks? Like at times where its really growly.

I can appreciate and enjoy the sound of it and how it fits in with the music, but for example I was reading an interview with Deafheaven and a lot of the questions were about the lyrics, and I don't think I've ever understood one without having to look them up online. (Although I can normally start to hear it if I read along with the song)

Is it something people can begin to hear as they listen to more metal?

Lyrics in my opinion dont matter one bit in metal. The only times I care about lyrics is when i'm learning the song. Depending on the band, some harsh metal vocals are easier to comprehend than you'd think at first. Listing to Deafheaven, to use your example, I can make out about as much as I'd be able to from any band with clean vocals.

On the other hand, no one's ever going to work out what the hell Demilich are talking about without a lyric sheet in front of them.

That said, if I'm particularly interested in a band I'll look up their lyrics sooner or later, and if they're actually decent I'll probably be able to piece them back together when I listen to the song from then on.

I wouldn't say you're supposed to understand the lyrics unless lyrics are one of the main aspect in the song you're listening to, in songs such as those the lyrics are pretty okay to understand. A good example of that would be last Nachtmystium album, every song is shrieked as most black metal but even without having to look the lyrics up they're coherent enough to make them out yourself.
Although I suppose as you listen to more metal you'll eventually start making out most of the lyrics yourself, but no, I don't think you're supposed to understand them.

sounds about right. What about the Dutch scene? I always thought when it comes to those guys, they were pretty much the most accurate descriptors for what 'classic' 90s death metal should be. A lot of Death and Autopsy influence but updated contemporarily (for the time)... except for Sinister who were definitely very Florida like.

It's not, it's dark folk, which why I mentioned Kveldssanger in my post. Nathanaël Larochette, the main dude from Musk Ox, has worked with some metal bands like Woods Of Ypres though

So I don't have to ask this in other threads, is there a compiled gallery of all the charts?

Also, can I get more Acid Bath type of sludge? Is that stoner? Or just too early to categorize?

acid bath were pretty experimental as far as sludge goes and helped forming the general sound of it, try dax riggs and agents of oblivion

This list is good if you want the most generic power metal possible. Lots of the artists on there have albums that are much more mature and diverse while still being power metal. I'm just going to recommend some other albums for some of the bands on the list to show a more diverse portfolio of the genre.

Angra - Temple of Shadows
Dream Evil - In the Night
Dark Moor - Autmnal or Tarot
Sonata Arctica - Winterheart's Guild or Reckoning Night
Helloween - The Time of the Oath or 7 Sinners (Keepers I and II are required power metal albums though)
Falconer - Northwind or Among Beggars and Thieves
Iced Earth - Horror Show or Something Wicked This Way Comes
Symphony X - Paradise Lost

I'd definitely agree with that. The list is more of an intro to the defining albums of the genre. I'll do the same thing:

Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica
Blind Guardian - All of their discography, specifically Nightfall in Middle-Earth and A Night at the Opera
HammerFall - Glory to the Brave
Keldian - Outbound
Kamelot - The Black Halo
Lost Horizon - Awakening the World
Sabaton - The Art of War
Triosphere - The Heart of the Matter

As for stuff I like or other essential bands also try:
Alestorm - Sunset on the Golden Age/Back through Time
DragonForce - Inhuman Rampage/Maximum Overload
Nightwish - It's not strictly power metal, but their discog is also solid, esp. Once
Noble Beast - s/t
Demons & Wizards - s/t
ManOwaR - Kings of Metal
Gloryhammer - Tales From the Kingdom of Fife

Again, that chart is comprehensive for the earlier stuff but there have been a lot of great bands since then. Sorry if it seems like a lot, I just sort of dumped my list of essentials on you. Enjoy!

Seems like they're being needlessly anachronistic. Do they even sell walkmans anymore? How do you play tapes nowadays? It's no wonder they're still underground when they needlessly cut off such a large portion of their fanbase. Why can't they just upload shitty home videos to Youtube or something?

You my friend don't listen to very much black metal then. That is the main format for underground black metal and always has been. Some releases never even make it out of the tape realm regardless of popularity. Others are demos that end up as vinyl down the road.

Are you serious? Walk into any thrift store and there are stacks of used decks. Are you not in the US? Only asking because it seems like this mindset is reserved for other countries where tapes may not be as plentiful.

The black metal / death metal releases people are constantly creaming themselves on here for were first released as cassettes. Most recently / notably Bolzer, Misþyrming, Wulkanaz, Vorde, Caveman Cult.
