Let's have a Beach Boys thread.

>Favorite album?
>Favorite song?
>Best Beach Boy?
>Album(s) you've recently been enjoying?

And anything else you feel like discussing. Let's have fun.

Friends is such a tight little album. It has a moment or two where it kind of loses me (I'm really really not a fan of Transcendental Meditation) but it's too warm and inviting not to love.

>>55093792
What do you think of it from what you've listened to? I've got a little love/hate relationship with side A. Sometimes it's brilliant, sometimes not so much.

Also if anyone has pics they want to dump so that I don't look stupid, go nuts!

I love it. Most of the songs that we're left off of Smile are very good.

well I don't listen to the beach boys like ever but there was a cassette at a store I was at and in the mini van my family owns only the cassette player works so I got it for that

>>55095337
Endless Summer is a pretty good summation of the first four years of their career so you made a good uneducated guess that day. I don't wanna tell you how to live your life but I'd strongly recommend listening to Pet Sounds. I get the feeling you might have heard its most famous song, God Only Knows, already.

I've never really been sure where to start with the Beach Boys. I've obviously listened to Pet Sounds and it is GOAT.

My favourite song is probably still I Get Along.

Samefag. Yeah I meant "I Get Around".

I only know Pet Sounds and the surf surf surf stuff. What else is good and what do I avoid?

>> No.55095611

>>55095462
What songs do you like off of Carl and the Passions? It's been the slowest grower out of any album I've listened to so far honestly. Marcella, All This is That, and Cuddle Up are all great imo but not much has stood out to me beyond that.

>>55095467
>>55095529
I made a chart but it's big and convoluted so I'm hesitant to post it. This pastebin I cooked up a few months ago is more succinct, although it's loaded with hot opinions so I hope it doesn't cause any bias.

Also I Get Around is one of my textbook definitions of a flawless pop song even though I don't listen to it a lot so I can see why it would be someone's favorite.

Sunflower and Love You are both underrated masterpieces

POB is a work of fucking art. What's your favorite song? You and I is so gorgeous.

>>55095873
>the one who doesn't like Frank Ocean

Or punk rock, apparently.

I'll Bet He's Nice is by far the best song on Love You imo, one of my favorite Beach Boys tunes. The synth parts are so fun, and I love how the synth bass introduces the bass part before it's sung by Mike in the outro. Reminds me of the french horn introducing the tenor 1 part during the canon at the end of God Only Knows. That's such a cool songwriting convention and I love when Brian uses/used it.

hard to tell, I've just listened to it once, yesterday. I really loved You and I and Rainbows. It's such a beautiful album, it's like Hall and Oates and The Beach Boys had a child who listens to country and folk.

>> No.55096145

>>55095993
yeah I'll Bet He's Nice is def the standout
I bought the 2014 re-issue of Love You though

Also, I probably like POB more than I do Pet Sounds

>> No.55096241

All This is That was my favorite. A very overlooked song and one of their best in that period. I also liked Marcella, Make It Good and Here She Comes (even though it sounds nothing like them at all). It's not Pet Sounds or Surf's Up but I think it's an enjoyable listen and better than any of the albums after.

>> No.55096250

>>55096101
Holy shit, I never realized how funny a midwest emo revival band covering this would be. Might actually make it more listenable too. As cute as this song I just can't stand Mike's vocals on it.

>>55096130
That's a great way to describe that album. I love how it sounds more like the Beach Boys than other Beach Boys albums of the time (particularly Love You).

>>55096145
I honestly didn't even know that was a real thing. I just searched for it, but I got nothing. Can I get a link?

>>55096177
I can see that. In a way it's sort of like Dennis's own Pet Sounds.

>> No.55096354

>>55096241
Even better than Love You? I know it's a divisive album, but damn. That's an opinion too hot for me to handle.

I totally agree that All This is That is overlooked. It's so wonderfully produced; both Mike and Carl's parts are incredibly warm-sounding and have an intimate vibe to them. That song's just like a pillow in the form of sound.

I'm gonna give this album some more love and listen closer to the songs you mentioned, but the opener always puts me off. I really dislike it. It just sounds so ridiculous to me. :\

but All This is That is transcendent . It really is a godly song. Better than anything George Harrison released. And they did it without Brian

I wouldn't disagree. It's probably my favorite from that album.
