Best is some neutral graphic design or a photo of the performer, worst is using actual artwork for the cover. It should not look eye-catching because then the product is manipulating your expectations of its qualities. I wish DG would quit it with those butt ugly stupid fonts. 3 string basses because Italy

The bass has always been far less standardised than the other string instruments - there are so many different regional tunings and number of strings.

Old Viennese tuning which was used right up until at least Beethoven's time was an open D tuning for a string bass like here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt-bNf6h0tI

The modern 4ths tuning didn't become standard until well into the 20th Century. Elgar and Vaughan Williams for example wrote for the prevalent English tuning of D-G-d-g, while Stravinsky, Strauss, Debussy etc wrote for a 5 string in 4ths with low C (rarely B)

>> No.55045820

>>55045549
what's the reason for this? why not stick to just one thing? and did people really wrote for 5 stringed basses? that's fucking crazy.

also what's the standard tuning right now? i'm currently playing on a E A D G bass and most basses i'm seeing are also tuned this way but maybe it's different in classical? oh yea, and why is it different to other stringed instruments? why not stick to one formula?

if you don't feel like answering those questions that's fine i just think it's really interesting. you could redirect me to a place where i can read about that if you don't feel like answering.

5 string basses most definitely are a thing, but much more common in Europe than in England or the US. This is basically a 4 string tuning with and extra low string.

The reason for this is composers demand that the basses are able to play an octave lower than the cello at the bottom of it's range.

The other options are a "C extension" which adds an extra length of fingerboard to the E string or tuning in 5ths - like a cello an octave lower - which necessitates more shifting

With regards to the regional variation lot of it was down to regional preference and tradition and also the transitional nature of the bass in the 18th century.

The Bass is not a true member of the Violin family even though many basses do have a violin shape. It is more directly descended form the Violone - the contrabass Viol which had 5 or 6 strings.

As the violin family became more prevalent and replaced Viols, Violones weren't just thrown away and replaced, they were converted to 4 or 5 string instruments.

Different regions adapted different tunings to match their preference. I guess part of this is that few composers were writing idiomatically for the bass - it was simply doubling the cello part an octave lower.

The exception to this is the Viennese/ Austrian composers who wrote specifically for Viennese tuning Haydn, Mozart, Vanhal, Ditterdorf and many others wrote orchestral solos and concerti specifically for this tuning.

The 4 string bass tuned in 4ths was becoming popular by the start of the 19th century - Keyper's concertos from 1805-7 are written for "modern" tuning - and had taken over by the early 20th.

For more reading, find Alfred Planyansky's book on the history of the bass.

I'll use English for "Symphony", "String Quartet" or "Vienna Philharmonic" but use the Italian or German etc for movement titles "Allegro" "Langsam" or for Vocal titles.

I try and have the work's title in the track tag as well as the movement, but I'm not totally consistent.

Artist tag is for Artist. There is a separate tag for Composer.

Learning both on an equal footing is quite rare.

A lot of us have studied both at various stages - Studying French has certainly informed aspects of my German bowing technique, but most people will study with a teacher who play a particular way and teaches only one grip.

You go to the guy who taught me to learn with German grip and to play in a robust Viennese style. You will not get the most from studies with him on a French bow and of course the same is true for studying German bow with a dyed-in-the-wool French bow player

Here's last year's production in Munich

Henze's We Come to the River has multiple stages and orchestras playing at once, I have no idea if it's any good since there are no recordings. ('A Beatles record is certainly cleverer than a Henze opera, and shorter as well,' according to Boulez)

>Cage selected Bach's The Art of Fugue as an early example of indeterminate music in his lecture "Composition as Process" because it was originally published as an open score, each voice on its own stave and with the instrumentation unspecified. "Timbre and amplitude characteristics of the material, by not being given, are indeterminate," he wrote. "This indeterminacy brings about the possibility of a unique overtone structure and decibel range for each performance of The Art of Fugue."

Further proof Bach was the most avant-garde composer of all time.
