Yeezus is just a Death Grips rip-off so how can it have a bigger score
| >> | No.55014929 The "Dean of American Rock Critics," Robert Christgau, gave a witty one-liner (as he is wont to do) about Kanye West's bold project, Yeezus: "Sign spotted on church in the wild: Death Grips--Be Like Them." The crucial part of this phrase is "Be Like Them." Because this isn't Death Grips, despite ridiculous claims made by many people. There is nary a tesla coil sample to be found here, the production of these tracks is not filled in maximal overload but rather minimal primalism, and Kanye sure as hell isn't MC Ride. But that is to his benefit: Death Grips, despite whatever pseudo-intellectual hipsters like to write about them, are a group focused in the schizophrenic and incomprehensible. Whatever messages their albums are focused on are clouded in abstract and disjunct lyricism that conveys the hopelessness their lyricism reinforces.
Hopelessness, however, is not the thesis of Yeezus. Rather, it is revolution. Kanye couldn't be MC Ride for this album. Ride is an unstable figure blown by the system. Kanye is a cultural demagogue; his words must be powerful and convincing. Phrases like "Fuck you and your corporation / Y'all niggas can't control me" are authoritative statements for his flock to march to. The mix of weakness and aggression in "Blood on the Leaves" could not have been accomplished by a Ride-figure; they are far too focused on the extremist side to accomplish anything of profundity. And the mix of abrasive honesty and heartfelt passion in Bound 2 are certainly beyond anything created by Death Grips. |
