real life was not as depicted in High Fidelity and Empire Records. mostly you went to a big chain store like Tower, Sam Goody, Warehouse, etc. And the people working there didn't know shit (except for the classical section. they were always music savants.) so you'd cruise around the cd racks where music was sorted by genre and, if you didn't know a band, or hear of a band, you just picked something that looked cool. spent $16. and hoped it was good.

and if you didn't know about the local college radio station, you never heard anything but mtv and whatever the big radio stations played. sometimes there would be a public access show on cable where someone would play videos for bands you'd never heard of. mtv did something similar in the middle of the night with 120 minutes (alt/indie) and Amp (electronic) after grunge had broken though and "alternative" was a thing.

anyway, i guess my point is finding "good" music wasn't easy in the 90s. or the 80s. unless you had some patrician parents (hint: no one did), you usually weren't exposed to the good shit until college. the internet unlocked fucking everything.

tldr: cobain's taste was patrician as fuck for the time.

also: pleb vs patrician is such a fucking pleb construct.
