If I were to get into this band what album should I start with?

Are they any good? Even worth getting into at all?

Which is their best album? Most accessible album? Best album? Least accessible album?

Is this buttrock?

>> No.54997614

Meant to say 'worst album?' instead of best album twice.

How old are you and how the fuck did you never listen to them when you were younger?

Listen to Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Just do it. Report back.

Start with BSSM
>If you liked it
Listen to Mother's Milk and Californication, very rock oriented
>Not that much
Listen to By the Way and Stadium Arcadium, they're much poppier

>I didn't like any
The RHCP are not for you

>I like it!
Listen to their older stuff and John Frusciante's solo stuff

They're a good band. Grew out of them and detest them a bit now, mostly because my friends never grew out of them and it got annoying as fuck listening to fucking Anthony Kiedes or whatever.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Liked it? Listen to Mother's Milk
Liked MM? Keep going backwards in their discog and get One Hot Minute too

Didn't like BSSM? Go to By the Way
Liked that? Try Californication, then I'm With You

Want two hours of Rick Rubin's sonic diarrhea? Listen to Stadium Arcadium

If you are listening for the guitars, the first three albums are Hillel Slovak, then the rest are all John Frusciante except One Hot Minute (Dave Navarro) and I'm With You (whatever their new guy's name is.

Make sure to try John Frusciante's stuff too.
Pic related (The Empyrean) is great psych rock.
Niandra Lades And Usually Just A T-Shirt is a great avant garde sort of album.
To me it sounds like Mr Bungle - s/t mixed with Sebadoh - III.
I haven't tried beyond that But I've heard good things and those albums I heard are worth checking out.

The guitar isn't even that prominent on OHM and generally just serves to complement the grooves laid down by Smith and Flea. Have you even listened to the album or are you jut another one of those children that automatically resents and RHCP guitarist that isn't Frusciante?

I'll break it down to you.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik is their core. Plain, great funk rock, what they're known for. From here on, I'll split it in a couple of different paths.

>You liked the album as a whole, and want more of this band in particular
Go to By the Way and Californication. They are a bit poppier, but also very great.
If you enjoyed the sound of BTW and Californication, but could want it poppier with more focus in Frusciante's guitar work, you should listen to Stadium Arcadium.
If you want it even poppier with a tad more disco-funk, listen to I'm With You.

>You liked the funk, but I don't think the combination between funk and rock works too great.
Freaky Styley is the album which has most focus on the funk feeling, and it was also produced by funk legend George Clinton, so now you should go here.
If you want the funk a bit poppier, I suggest going to first I'm With You, and then Stadium Arcadium (if you liked I'm With You, you'd most likely enjoy SA, BTW and Californication too)

>You liked the rock, but I don't think the combination between funk and rock works too great.
You should go to Mother's Milk, this is their most hard rock-ish album.
If you want more of this hard rocking with a taste of funk, you should listen to The Uplift Mofo Party Plan and then their s/t (which is often called their worst, though I disagree). Those two albums are almost funk metal, though not too metal-y.
If you want some darker vibes, you should listen to One Hot Minute. This isn't nearly as bad as everyone tells you, and especially tracks like My Friends and Shallow Be Thy Game stand out for me.

Continued.

Also be sure to pay attention to which guitarist is on which release, as it highly influences the style. I'll give you a short rundown here:

>Jack Sherman
He's only playing on their s/t, and is generally regarded their worst guitarist through the times
>Hillel Slovak
Was a co-founder of the band, but only plays on Freaky Styley and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (their 2nd and 3rd album), before he sadly overdosed in '88.
>John Frusciante
Without a doubt the most liked of the guitarist (and for good reasons) with a big solo career to look into as well. He plays on Mother's Milk, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication, By the Way and Stadium Arcadium.
>Dave Navarro
Formerly of Jane's Addiction, Navarro played on One Hot Minute, but he's getting some stick from some of the fans who only like Frusciante.
>Josh Klinghoffer
Their current guitarist, who played on I'm With You. He's talented, but it doesn't really show too much on IWY unfortunately. Next album should be better for him.

Finally, I just read that you're into hardcore punk. I suggest you this route then.

The Uplift Mofo Party Plan --> s/t --> Blood Sugar Sex Magik --> Mother's Milk --> One Hot Minute --> Freaky Styley --> Californication --> By the Way --> Stadium Arcadium --> I'm With You

RHCP is extremely unchallenging in every way, but they're great.

If you like funk, listen to Mothers Milk or BSSM. If you can stand a little corny rapping, their first three albums are even better.

Their melodic stuff gets a lot of hate, but it's my favorite period in their work. By the Way and Stadium Arcadium both have a good bit of filler, but they are extremely awesome and guitar-melody driven. Oh, did I mention? You must learn to respect Frusciante as your lord and savior. Californication is my least favorite album, but it spawned their best singles. Otherside, Californication (the song), Road Trippin', and Parallel Universe are all great. Don't forget to check out the two tracks that were going to be a part of an unreleased album and were later included on their 2003 Greatest Hits: Save the Population and Fortune Faded. Both Fantastic.

Also, One Hot Minute is awesome. Just fucking awesome. John is a fantastic musician, but this album is actually my favorite of theirs because of the awesome collaboration between Kiedis and Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction. Will Ferrell, their drummer, is at his best here, too.

And for John Frusciante's solo stuff, it's all good. If you're looking to get into it, check out Shadows Collide With People (basically the Chili Peppers without Kiedis), The Empyrean (lots of old school psychedelia), Inside of Emptiness (hard rockish), Curtains (sad-core, maybe), and The Will to Death (very late-60's rock sound, awesome lyricism).

>> No.55000862

>>55000387
Haven't listened to IBY, but IWY is really good. Klinghoffers playing style reminds me of Slovak, and it would be awesome if we could see the kind of heavy metal riffs that were in late-slovak rchp and early-froosh rhcp

that said, a few of the songs on IWY are pretty lame but none ruin the album for me

I'm glad you like it, so do I. Meet Me at the Corner is an amazing song. Since you like the early stuff I suggest you go listen to Victorian Machinery from IBY. I really love that track, and it's so heavy compared to anything else they've done with Josh.

i was a very big fan of rhcp, now i'm off with post rock-metal, but when i was a teenager i listened to them really a lot, i have the complete discography of rhcp and john frusciante solo works, BUT now there are my advice: you can find the real rhcp in the first 3 albums (self-titled,freaky styley, the uplift mofo party plan), if u don't like it, u can pass to their most famous works in the '90s: mother's milk (1989 and first with frusciante), BSSM (john frusciante best work with rhcp), one hot minute (with dave navarro) and californication that definitely opened them to the commercial music. The following album are like pop rock and i don't like it a lot now, i enjoyed it a lot but now with consciousness and without the teenage-hype i can say that the 2002-20xx era sucks.
VERY IMPORTANT: listen to the john frusciante solo albums. Very exp and u can really feel the artist behind his rockstar figure.
<- what i listen to

it's the two most recent rhcp guitarists (josh and john) plus the bassist from fugazi
