Name an edgier musician who isn't being even a little ironic. You can't.

inb4 faggots say Gira isn't an edgelord because they like his music.

He's pretty much at John Lydon status theses days when it comes to edge - Just a stubborn but basically harmless old crank that can be depended on for a predictibly snarky comment. During the 1990s when he wrote The Consumer he was alcoholic, Jarboe was also very edgy during that period so she played a part in them trying to out-goth each other.

Gira got less edgy after Jarboe left, the later Angels of Light stuff is tame by comparison.

Both Gen and Gira, due to their heavy psychedelic use have a bit of an obsession with the relationship between the body and the soul.

SECONDS: How prevalent or integral were drugs to the punk scene in your experience?

GIRA: People seemed to drink a lot, and certainly there was a lot of Methadrine around - a really evil and corrosive drug - and though at first LSD was looked down upon as a vestige of the hated Hippies - I took a lot of it myself when I was a psychedelicized thirteen-year-old runaway street kid - towards the end of my time in LA, around 1979, I seem to remember that people were taking a lot of LSD, which was a weird sensation coupled with the music of that time.

I read an interview in which Gira admitted he did a lot of drugs as a teenager but stopped entirely once he seriously started to make music, and he also said he was very glad to be out of that phase and wouldn't wish it upon anyone as he was just a "zombie". I think the interview was from 1986, so I doubt he was on LSD in the '90s.

It's what he said. Michael doesn't even state what drugs he was taking in the interview I was referring to. I'm not sure why it matters either.

>MICHAEL GIRA, this extremely polite and almost formal person who onstage in crusty longjohns roars out his bile and occasionally drools, was born in Los Angeles. He won't say when, but his teenage years in the late '60s and early '70s were spent "taking so many drugs I was like a zombie looking in at life through a window.

>"I was just misguided. I don't think I got anything out of that indulgence - it just destroyed any potential I had at the time. I'd recommend all teenagers abstain from drugs and corrosive substances. There's no romance in self-destructive behaviour."

I've deleted a bit.

>"I put that in public? God, I'm really an idiot. I don't want to talk about it. Suffice to say, when I was young drugs turned me into a zombie. Within the space of a week I was both[...] The one that happened to me was [...]. It's really a sordid thing. [...], being powerful and powerless, were disgusting.
