It literally does though. And the schizophrenic Pollock-esque nature of the thing is it's identity. It's about a band tearing themselves apart and desperately trying to get the hell out of there, whilst still being bonded through their love of each-other and love of music.

> On 22 August, Starr abruptly left the studio, explaining later that he felt that his role was minimised compared to that of the other members, and that he was tired of waiting through the long and contentious recording sessions. He frequently turned up to sessions and sat waiting in the reception area for the others to turn up.

>Lennon, McCartney and Harrison pleaded with Starr to return. He agreed, and upon his return on 5 September, he found his drum kit decorated with red, white, and blue flowers, a welcome-back gesture from Harrison. McCartney described the sessions for The Beatles as a turning point for the group, saying "there was a lot of friction during that album. We were just about to break up, and that was tense in itself", while Lennon later said "the break-up of the Beatles can be heard on that album." Of the album's 30 tracks, only 16 have all four band members performing.

Long, Long, Long is a Dylan rip-off (in the best way), but it's still a melody re-hash of Sad-Eyed. Also, the line "so long all my tears have been wasting" is kind of elementary as Lennon's line in "It's Only Love": 'when i see you i get high.. butterfles' and Harrison has done a lot better, anyway.

I don't agree with scaruffi but that blog post is dumb
for instance
>You can’t accuse the Beatles of selling other people’s music and simultaneously accuse them of changing the same music before they sold it. If they changed the music, then they transformed it into their own music; if they didn’t change it, then in selling it to the masses, they can’t have wrecked it.
is deliberately missing the point (the accusation is that the beatles sold a white version of black music and sold because they were white, the idea that anybody argues it's exactly the same as a howling wolf record is a strawman), the beethoven bit argument is also obviously false

>> No.54898608

>>54898555
>the idea that anybody argues it's exactly the same as a howling wolf record is a strawman
I don't think it is. The phrase 'white boys playing black music' seems to imply that very thing.

it's not a flaw, and i'm not saying it's not a flaw because it's deliberate.

The reason it's self-titled and the album is "white" is quite obvious. The Beatles accept that they really have no identity. All of their work (with few exceptions) are their versions of other people's styles.

Paul said it of Lady Madonna being him doing a Fats Domino impression. If I Fell is very much a ballad you could hear Elvis singing. Oh! Darling is a swamp pop song that most Louisiana people actually thought was by a local artist. Good Day Sunshine is like a Judy Garland movie tune. Helter Skelter is a song Hendrix wouldn't wrote, etc etc.

All the songs on White Album are without identity, which gives it its own identity. You can't really judge this against the touchstone of the typical album aesthetic for that reason. It's for the same reason why you wouldn't hold Daniel Johnston to the typical songwriter touchstone. It's truly one of a kind.
