So I'm just starting to really get into listening to music and I want to go full hipster and pick up a vinyl record player.

I know a lot of the cheaper ones with built-in speakers are terrible so I was wondering, what set-up do you guys use? Any recommendations for an 'entry-level' set-up that won't cost too much?

General vinyl record thread too I guess

Crosley is the way to go. Just buy your own speakers to plug in to the headphone jack and you'll be fine.

i use an audio technica lp 120 and audio engine a2's. was a little pricy tho, 450 in total

Look for an older model with strobe calibration and no preamp. Shouldn't cost too much. Put the bulk of your budget into a vintage mid-tier reciever, like a Pioneer SX-650, and a good pair of 10"s that match. Get somebody who knows their stuff to walk you through it. Make sure the seller has maintained the stuff, good belt and cartridge on your turntable, recent cap job on your reciever, speakers in good shape, etc.

Agreed, be sure to get either bose or beats headphones too.

HEY I was about to make a thread about this.

So I started collecting vinyl, and my dad gave me a Technics Fg Servo SL-BD1 from 1985. Are those quality players? I have to replace the cartridge and the belt. Is it worth it, or should i just invest in a better turntable? And if yes, which should I invest in?

Thanks.

You will got a good life out of that if you take good care of it. You probably want to dress it up with the rest of
>>54897994
Honestly, with the right receiver and speakers, the turntable you pick won't hurt the sound too much as long as it has some basic features, and Technics is a good brand.

This is literally the best way to go. Fuck all this belt drive bullshit. Unless you wanna get a 1200 and risk the used market. Audio Technica kills it. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of other nice high grade players that are belt drive but anything less than $250 this is the one.

Technics is my favorite go-to brand. Most audioheads think its shit, but most people dont go for Technics so it can be had cheap.

You have the belt-drive model, I have a direct drive, quartz drive model QD-20. It's great gear. fix it up and get it running

I was thinking about getting the Basic Orbit turntable, is this decent for a cheap setup?

>> No.54902410

technics make great tables. you can grab an older one like a SL-D1 direct drive for about $100 or barely more on ebay.
marantz receivers are fantastic too. grab a 2015 model (not the year 2015, it's just called 2015). they have many models but the 2015 has great sound.
speakers are your preference. i like yamaha, boston acoustics, and b&w.

I collect CDs for the simple fact that they're affordable, easy to replace and a whole lot less prone to stop working because I'm not very handy.
Vinyl is just too prone to dying eventually or just losing quality from playing it too often.

I'd love to get into vinyl collecting as well as most obscure bands only release their albums on that platform but I think I'll stay away from it.

Can anyone help me identify my record player? The guy I bought it off said it may have been re-badged for a different company when it was made, and i'm leaning towards that. It looks to be very similar to some of the older Technics and even some Pioneers (the arm especially). I not, it's definitely a pretty alright knock off. Works well, sounds a lot better than the shitty 4-in-1 phono/aux/radio thing we had before.

You can purchase affordably, you just have to look around for places that will sell you the item you want for the cheapest price (especially online).
Also you can get turntables pretty cheap. I'm not too concerned about sound quality when I listen to records, it's more just the novelty of putting it on and having something large and tangible. It's fun, but I only started doing it for the same reason you're thinking about starting - for those one-off releases.
