and benji is literally just boring prose in a disgusting accent over boring twing twangs. The lyrical structure and melodies in general are poorly thought out. I can appreciate the levelled delivery as a representation of the repression of emotion that society demands of men, but that doesn't make it emotionally or viscerally appealing any more than Age of Adz's level of brash experimentation does. The vulnerable, innocent, yet still guided delivery on C&L in the wake of his mother's death in particular compared to the gravelly, often trailing vocals found on Benji. The elegance of his twing twangs, so airy and light and thin that they invoke angelic harps heralding his mother's ascent to the heavens, compared to the lumbering lethargy of Kozelek's album. The emphasis on Sufjan's interpersonal relationships and actual, deep emotion compared to the detached, purely descriptive lyrics of Benji.
What these all add up to is that Benji, while it may be more conceptually interesting, completely lacks any melodic or emotional appeal. Fortunately, C&L has them in spades. |
