Is the animal collective actually good?
Or is it by autists for autists?
I heard one of the members thinks he is a wolf or some shit and I saw that youtube video of them moaning and slapping the guitar.
But at the same time their albums are really celebrated on this board.

best band ever

Their music is legitimately good but it's celebrated mostly by autists.

Their fans are mostly autists but they're pretty laid back and generally nice

It would be good if autists didn't like it.

It's fucking weird as fuck.
I personally don't get it. It's like someone took an average progressive rock song, and entropied the fuck out of it. It's just..noises. Upon more noises, upon screeching sounds throughout. With singing in the background.

I personally think it's unlistenable, but y'all niggers are entitled to your own opinions.

its not that weird. its actually pretty cool because it takes all these avant garde and psychedelic ideas and mixes it with indie tropes, and yet it still has pop sensibilities, even in their old stuff.

imo, the music can be mediocre, but they have some gems, like STGSTV, sung tongs, prospect hummer, merriweather, etc. the more noisey, free form stuff is cool too, in the right setting, and the feels stuff is pretty easy to listen to. to me, feels, and strawberry jam are super "indie" sounding.

there are much weirder neo psych bands out there, but anco has good minds. so they have good lyrics, melodies, textures, etc

def one of the better bands out there, and i dont know what people are talking about with the autist thing, even my highschool english teacher liked them for christs sake, they also talk about them on my local alternative station.

I've never understood the disdain for those threads as theyre usually pretty civil and most everyone gets along, even if a lot of the posters are weird.

Actually great.

But I don't get why MPP gets shitloads of praise. It's boring and uninventive, while being cheesy at the same time. Most of the songs are just simple beats under guitar/synth arpeggios with some vocal harmonies over them. One of their worst IMO.

What album did you listen to? They have so many different ones, some being noisy and some being very enjoyable

They have excellent melodies, try listening to them again- particularly recent releases

Even in its simplicity, they manage to make it beautiful and the sounds are very fun. It's not cheesy at all to me. I mean you could say almost the same thing about Pet Sounds, but it doesn't mean that's bad

They are a very good band, for the simple reason that they change their sound to something original and interesting on each album and still keep it consistent.

You can't take one song out of context from their first album and judge the whole band

here listen to this just to see how varied they can be

Even if it did, my question is. Why the fuck did it start off so shitty in the first place? What's the point of having nails on chalkboard screeching? What's the point of having a random mish mash of dinging metal instruments and other assortments of wacky things playing in no discernible rhythm or melody? I guess I'm too much of a pleb to understand it. I did like the sky song the other guy posted but that's not their experimental shit. That's very radiohead-esque of them.
It's their weirder, lesser known shit that makes me think that I've been dragged into hell. Yet that's the stuff you guys love so much

Listen to the whole album and you might get it, but the noise juxtaposed with the childlike melodies is really interesting and adds a sort of mystery. Like a grim fairy tale. This is what Avey and Panda Bear tried to convey with this album (found in the liner notes)

>Not long ago a young boy named Avey and his friend Panda Bear roamed the patch work which covers the land (some call it forest). They were looked upon by Pan and raised by fairies and the Angels of light who play deep within the Wood. 'Let's make the music of childhood,' Avey shouted one day as the two played. Panda thought this idea was a good one. 'I can use my magical Rythm sticks and you can play your Sun harp,' he said. So the two began to create melodies and Panda brought rythms from every direction while Avey sang. All of the songs were about wooden toys and invisible friends and filled with the light of the forest. This is the first group of songs they played.

AFAIK the song is meant to represent the growth of a child into an adult through their youth and teenage years. The beginning of the song sounds so formless and incomprehensible because that's the way the world seems to a child. It's basically the musical equivalent of Joyce's A Portrait. This is just my personal interpretation of the song but that's how I would explain it.
