I've never heard this album yet. I've noticed other people saying it's not that special if you dont listen to the other BB albums before it.
Should I crash course their previous albums like Safari, Today, and Summer Days, so I can properly appreciate their evolution and importance of Pet Sounds?

You don't need to have a knowledge of pre-Pet Sounds Beach Boys to appreciate Pet Sounds. you need a knowledge of pre-Pet Sounds pop music as a whole. IMO, to REALLY appreciate pet sounds, get a grasp on what most pop music sounded like prior to or roughly at the time of its release. Really envelop yourself in the general sound of what would make it big on the charts in those days. This can include listening to "Today!" and "Summer Days ..." if you want, or maybe just the singles off of it. That's your call.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Year-End_Hot_100_singles_of_1966 (stick to stuff released prior to May, which was when Pet Sounds came out)
Nothing in pop prior to May 1966 sounded like Pet Sounds (save for material on the b side of "Today!"), especially not anything on the billboard. Now, I can just TELL you that, but I think the best thing to do is to listen and just feel the difference in instrumentation, atmosphere, and sonics. I think it'll be easier to appreciate stuff like the vocal harmonies and the chord progressions if you compare it to what was on the billboard prior to and around the time this song came out.
It's easy to take a lot of the material on this record for granted because our standards are different nowadays, and this record sounds relatively safe according to those standards. But I think if you just listen to maybe one or two dozen pre-May 1966 singles then you'll get an idea of how dry everything sounded compared to Pet Sounds. |
| >> | No.54766979 >>54764723 So almost everything that could be about this album said has been said countless times. Yet, I'm still left with one lingering and rather aggravating question? What exactly are they feeding those goats on the album cover? Bread? Some sort of unspecified goat feed? It could conceivably be some blend of corn husk, alfalfa or hay? I've heard some farmers feed goats a mixture of hay, molasses combined with a probiotic culture of bacillus subtillis to promote healthy digestion? Heres what we know: The picture of the album cover was taken in May 1966, at the San Diego Zoo. The San Diego Zoo is revered for its highly ethical care of its fauna. With that in mind, we can infer that the Beach Boy's aren't feeding these goats, the average run of the mill goat-feed but rather a complex recipe likely designed by caprine nutritionist. A caprine nutritionist is an expert specifying in the dietary requirements of goats. So with this, we can eliminate the possibility that they are feeding these goats raw hay or alfalfa. Also let's talk about what we know of these goats. The goats pictures are domesticated goats, Capra aegagrus hircus, which is a subspecies of a wild goat originating from eastern Asia. These goats can be used for skins, milk or meat. But in this case, considering they were at a public zoo, they were almost certainly used solely for public display. My guess is they were being fed pressed cubes, a concoction of dried lye grass, alfalfa, some culture of a bacteria for digestion, vitamin B-1, vitamin B-2, and copper. See I think their would be a heavy emphasis on B vitamins due to domesticated goat's susceptibility to anemia. Also, its a well known fact domesticated goats frequently possess some variety of a copper deficiency. But that's just me /mu/... What are your thoughts? |
