I've never heard this album yet. I've noticed other people saying it's not that special if you dont listen to the other BB albums before it.
Should I crash course their previous albums like Safari, Today, and Summer Days, so I can properly appreciate their evolution and importance of Pet Sounds?

who has ever said this?

context helps i guess because it is a big leap in songwriting, but the instrumentation is pretty similar to the two records preceding it. either way, you shouldn't really need to listen to anything before or after this to appreciate it. just keep listening to it until you get it. it might take some time.

other albums are worth checking out though.

They said that because they were clearly ignorant of mid 60s pop.

You don't need to have a knowledge of pre-Pet Sounds Beach Boys to appreciate Pet Sounds. you need a knowledge of pre-Pet Sounds pop music as a whole. IMO, to REALLY appreciate pet sounds, get a grasp on what most pop music sounded like prior to or roughly at the time of its release. Really envelop yourself in the general sound of what would make it big on the charts in those days. This can include listening to "Today!" and "Summer Days ..." if you want, or maybe just the singles off of it. That's your call.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Year-End_Hot_100_singles_of_1965

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Year-End_Hot_100_singles_of_1966 (stick to stuff released prior to May, which was when Pet Sounds came out)

Nothing in pop prior to May 1966 sounded like Pet Sounds (save for material on the b side of "Today!"), especially not anything on the billboard. Now, I can just TELL you that, but I think the best thing to do is to listen and just feel the difference in instrumentation, atmosphere, and sonics. I think it'll be easier to appreciate stuff like the vocal harmonies and the chord progressions if you compare it to what was on the billboard prior to and around the time this song came out.

It's easy to take a lot of the material on this record for granted because our standards are different nowadays, and this record sounds relatively safe according to those standards. But I think if you just listen to maybe one or two dozen pre-May 1966 singles then you'll get an idea of how dry everything sounded compared to Pet Sounds.

>Smile?

The unfinished album that Brian started working on in mid to late '66 to early to mid '67.

>Smiley Smile?

The album they came out with instead due to pressure from their record label, Capitol. They recycle and re-record some material that was written for Smile; about half of the album is original, and the other half is stuff intended for Smile. Very stripped down since costs for Smile were monumental and they didn't have the money to record anything big. People consider it one of the first lofi albums ever made, and certainly one of the first lofi pop albums, even predating The Velvet Underground & Nico.

>Smile Sessions?

In 2004, "Brian Wilson Presents Smile" came out. This was Brian and his backing band "completing" Smile (even though many fans believe Brian Wilson in '66 and '67 would have come up with something different than what's on BWPS). Seeing how people loved BWPS so much, Capitol put out the Smile Sessions, and the name should speak for itself; they're tapes from the sessions of the original Smile album. Here we have the original Beach Boys and the Wrecking Crew doing their thing, and it's MOSTLY all material from the Smile sessions back in '66 and '67. The first two discs use the tracklist that BWPS came up with in 2004.

That's about it.

SMiLE is the legendary unfinished album that Brian shelved due to a lot of mostly personal reasons, a lot of the material was recorded but it was never fully released.

Smiley Smile is an official album that came out in 67, and it's basically a very watered down version of what the original SMiLE would've sound like. Still and incredible album and some people actually prefer it to Smile Sessions.

Smile Sessions is a collection of sessions of what would've been "SMiLE", released in 2011. It's mostly finished but not 100% and you can notice how it's unfinished at some places. This version is what's mostly considered as "SMiLE" since it's most close to the original. But it's still not the original.

Now there's another one, called "Brian Wilson Presents Smile" which is an album that came out in 2004 that Brian recorded as an old man. This version is supposedly how SMiLE was supposed to sound like, keep in mind it came in 2004 before Smile Sessions. It's pretty good but it doesn't have the rest of the boys and doesn't really captivates the 60's and the times of when the material was written.

So almost everything that could be about this album said has been said countless times. Yet, I'm still left with one lingering and rather aggravating question? What exactly are they feeding those goats on the album cover? Bread? Some sort of unspecified goat feed? It could conceivably be some blend of corn husk, alfalfa or hay? I've heard some farmers feed goats a mixture of hay, molasses combined with a probiotic culture of bacillus subtillis to promote healthy digestion?
Heres what we know:
The picture of the album cover was taken in May 1966, at the San Diego Zoo. The San Diego Zoo is revered for its highly ethical care of its fauna. With that in mind, we can infer that the Beach Boy's aren't feeding these goats, the average run of the mill goat-feed but rather a complex recipe likely designed by caprine nutritionist. A caprine nutritionist is an expert specifying in the dietary requirements of goats.
So with this, we can eliminate the possibility that they are feeding these goats raw hay or alfalfa.
Also let's talk about what we know of these goats.
The goats pictures are domesticated goats, Capra aegagrus hircus, which is a subspecies of a wild goat originating from eastern Asia. These goats can be used for skins, milk or meat. But in this case, considering they were at a public zoo, they were almost certainly used solely for public display.
My guess is they were being fed pressed cubes, a concoction of dried lye grass, alfalfa, some culture of a bacteria for digestion, vitamin B-1, vitamin B-2, and copper.
See I think their would be a heavy emphasis on B vitamins due to domesticated goat's susceptibility to anemia. Also, its a well known fact domesticated goats frequently possess some variety of a copper deficiency.
But that's just me /mu/... What are your thoughts?

The lyrics are profound and depressing yet uplifting. The key is not fixed, and the chord progression is very unusual. The vocal harmonies are amazing and have that ending vocal coda like on At My Window, God Only Knows, Surf's Up, etc. with all the intertwining contrapuntal voices. I can't think of another song that sounds like it. The way you can feel the waves crash with the harmonies on the initial "i'm a cork on the ocean..." or the blowing (synth?) melody for the "i'm a leaf on a windy day..." it's spiritual, psychedelic, something indescribable

The San Diego Zoo is perhaps the most highly regarded zoological park in existence. It currently accommodates 3,500 species of animals and has been accredited multiple times for its unsurpassed animal care. Feeding the goat's apple wedges is something you would find in a petting zoo not the in the world's first-rate zoo. Still, we can see Brian is clearly holding an apple wedge, the cultivar of which remains unknown. 7,500 cultivars of apples are known to exist, but we can narrow the search by eliminating cultivars that don't posses a red skin.
Even if we discovered which cultivar is being used , the apple was likely filled with, or peppered with some sort of vitamin mixture. I wish someone had asked this in Brian's recent AMA.
I live in Los Angeles and could make a trip to San Diego. Perhaps a seasoned staff would recall what they fed the goats in the mid to late 60's.

I'd really would've liked to see how that sound collage portion would've gone over in 1966-67.

Well, technically, it probably would've been as well-liked as Revolution 9.

I mean musically, the rest of the album is darker, just look at the cover. Student Demonstration Time just does not fit well into the album

>> No.54771523

I borrowed that from a library in my teens. Didn't work for me, listened once maybe and returned it. I was a fan of Simon & Garfunkel back then and liked some Beatles so it's not about that. I probably just couldn't appreciate it or get into it then. What is the best song on that album, I'll play it next?

Since we're all talking about later BB albums, what the best post-brian era album? Surfs up? Sunshine?

I guess i'm just not a fan
>All Summer Long
I only ever listened to the first verse and just assumed it was a hot rod track, but it's not at all bad. Only problem is I don't think it can be fit into the order of Girls on the Beach > Surfer Girl > Summertime Blues > Lonely Sea > Warmth of the Sun
