I was once at an Erykah Badu show. All these 30 something black women around me start giving me the eye. One of them asked why a little white boy is at an Erykah Badu show. I say I've been listening for a while. I'm singing along and know all the words. She goes into a rap medley (tupac, snoop, biggie etc.) and I know all the verses. The women start to dig it and we have a nice time. But I still felt like I had to prove myself just because I was white. It still makes me hesitant to go to a rap show and I think I've retreated from hip hop in general because I feel out of place. I feel like this is the feeling the writer of this piece is feeling. Where the blame goes is tough, though. I don't feel like she was right to throw B&S under the bus. If she feels alienated while trying to enjoy something she likes, I can appreciate it. I just don't know if she's actually helping. I would not fault her for speaking her mind, but her then not standing up for it and being willing to debate was the worst part. Her general attitude of being anti-white also does not help her case. I'm torn on this thing.
