To be fair OP, if you view it in the context of the time he was relatively impressive. Lots interesting techniques that nobody else had done, yet

Anyway, for my pick, anyone who plays in a generic '5-minute solo' power metal band. The idea of such songwriting is great, the first three times you hear it, at least.

Jimi Hendrix was a great guitarist AND a fantastic musician. Sure, he was a skilled and revolutionary in his approach to guitar playing, but I feel like too often people ignore the fact he was a great songwriter too.

And what comes to EVH, I think he was a great guitarist too. Although Van Halen is obnoxious cock-waving hard rock band, Eddie's guitar work is often quite memorable, melodic and angular in rhythmic sense especially considering their radio-friendly hard rock context. Just listen the intro of Mean Streets (muh tapping) and tell me it isn't musical.

He is very, very good, but he doesn't play nearly as cleanly as he lets on in print, and the model he "pioneered" was being done to less excess beforehand, and has been improved upon ceaselessly since.

Jason Becker, at 19, was technically superior to virtually any guitarist that has come before or since. And not only that, but he was actually able to write beautiful music and be soulful and melodic. He's was simply the perfect guitarist.
And then he got ALS and has been paralyzed ever since.
Then, the fact that he was given just a few years to live, and now, over 20 years later is not only still alive, but improving, and continues to compose music, is simply mindblowing.

Jason is one of the GOAT inspirational stories and will go down in the hall of fame of life.

>When Frank Zappa was given a huge list of all the top guitars players in an interview, EVH was the only guy he thought was good.

I don't know about anyone else, but it was only when I picked up the tab book for VH1 that I realised just how insane EVH's stuff was for 1978.

The left hand stretches are fucking inctedible.......8 to 9 fret strectches for the first lick in the ice cream man solo (it's picked, not tapped). There's also a ton of jazz shit going on in his solos. I only read recently that his dad was a touring jazz musician too.

If one guy deserves his cred, it's Eddie.

I also own a Van Halen classic songs tab book and yes, I can't play a single thing by him.

He's just nuts. You hear a song and think it's pretty simple, but you break it down and realize it's anything but. He's crazy and I gave up. I haven't learned a single song of theirs yet.

I've got a lots of tab books of Vai, Satriani etc but EVH solos are still some of the hardest shit i've ever come across. It's just so unconventional the way he plays scales, bends are crazy wide and the stretching is off the charts.

The tapping is actually the easy bit compared to the other crazy shit he does. Sometimes what sounds like him tapping is actually really wide alternate picked licks though.

Why overrated, some of you may wonder. Jimi was an ideal icon for for the hippie twat movement of the late 60's, that's why. He was exalted to the skies by an "oh-so-counterculture" clique that yearned for their "hippy saviour", regardless of his actual musical ability (damn, "musical" and "hippy" in the same sentence). In fact, they were fascinated by shocking noisy tricks and stage gimmicks that he borrowed from free jazz avant-gardists of the time, not by his compositions or musicmanship. Hendrix the myth filled a niche of an anti-establishment ideal in belief system of your average slimy dope head of the early 70's. Hendrix the man was a decent pop musician at his best, with a natural talent for improvisation and a distinctive flair for showmanship. Don't tell me about Hendrix's " guitar innovations", nobody gives a f*ck about fuzz pedals and feedback in our time, nobody copies his "technique" (or rather his deliberate disregard of any consistent technique). Plus, he didn't even accomplish most of what he said he will because he died.
All the idolatry didn't go unnoticed by wheeler-dealers of the music industry. And voila - they tell us we've got to worship black Apollo with a six-stringed (Strat®) lyre now. These fuckers teamed up with old drugged rock'n'roll farts to make guitar-playing teenagers' lives miserable. The kids are obliged and conditioned to enjoy the "profoundness" of his rusty blues-rock anthems and silly ballads as if they were a religious revelation.

Alright, I agree with Hendrix being the most influential and etc etc etc guitarist. But for fuck's sake, can we stop putting him on top of every "best guitarists ever" list?
