“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.
It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

tl;dr: if you believe hipsters exist, you are a plebeian.

Solitude by Lord Snow is the best skramz album of all time. Better than anything Orchid, Funeral Diner, Pg.99, City of Caterpillar, etc. ever released. It's unbelievably chaotic and emotional but so tight and complex at the same time. The guitar work is incredibly innovative, the drumming is fucking crazy, and the vocals are some of the best the genre has to offer. I don't know why they're not more well-known to fans of skramz/emoviolence.

Shinobu-Worstword, ho!
They have a strong following in san antonio but they've never gotten as much recognition as other acts to be on AMR like Bomb the music industry and AJJ. I personally think they're better than bot.
Also home movies is ace

I really fucking love box codax, no idea how they're not more popular considering the work that goes into their albums and that Nick McCarthy also plays in Franz Ferdinand

I used to listen to this a lot, not quite my cup of tea anymore but I mean it's got a good bit of nostalgia, if you like fleet foxes this is probably right up your alley

>i'm not a big post-hardcore fan

>i don't have that album though
really? i've tracked down and listened to all of their stuff. abracadaver is decent, the rest of their stuff is mediocre, but imo please believe it is perfect. sort of like a diamond in the rough. dancy, irreverant, with relentless guitar hooks and great vocal meoldies.

Fatano reviewed it when it came out for some reason, pretty much out of nowhere

seen it posted here a few times in noise rock threads back when it came out.
one of my top 5 albums, and the band broke up about 2 months ago

Not enough love for Tub Ring around here, seems like something /mu/ would like a lot.

Additionally, Jerry Paper also seems like something that could easily be /mu/core, incredibly unique.

yeah, there's a bunch of loosely related stuff that gets called that. not all of it sounds like this though

you might like These Arms Are Snakes, Decahedron, Milemarker, or Drive Like Jehu

Some 70's lo-fi acid folk from the 80's. Some tracks are ok, but others are very good.

don't listen to it much anymore, but fav tracks were The Partisan and Gone Darker. don't think they have much of a following. they broke up a few years back. as far as i know they're still broken up.

Yeah Dories' stuff is fantastic! Found it a few months back but I'm all hands on deck for anyone out there spreading the Women family about.

Dories, Cindy Lee, Gold, Friendo, Viet Cong, Chad VanGaaleen (Diaper Island specifically), The Dorothys, Androgynous Mind, The Chris Reimer Tapes.... anymore anyone?
