You sound like you just sort of half-listened to the album while focusing on something else, OP, but it doesn't really matter what you think of the album as long as I enjoy it, I guess.

Now go listen to other thing.

I listened to it five times since 2010, I don't get it. It's okay, and very inoffensive, but I don't understand why people LOVE it so much. Why is it one of the more popular albums on /mu/?

It's really not. It gets talked about a lot in autumn and winter I suppose, but I don't see it here that often. It's been posted a shitload lately though, dunno why.

Anyway, I enjoy it a lot because Phil does a great job creating the atmosphere of nature through the music and the production, and I really like the story it tells. I think it's life-affirming but in a sort of somber way, as opposed to a triumphant one, and that's something that resonates with me personally. The harmonies are unique because sometimes they'll be beautiful, and other times kind of dissonant. I love the instrumentation and the small sonic details throughout the album.

This, more or less

What makes it such a great album, at least to me, is how genuine it all is. Like, it's just this lonesome, honest, thoughtful guy from buttfuck nowhere writing lonesome, honest, thoughtful music, not trying to make a buck or anything. Just doing what he loves and expressing himself in a profound way

The lyrical themes of nature, the metaphors, the really very creative lo-fi production, the kind of concept the entire album has, and especially the way you can come back to it as many times as you want and still notice something knew/pick up on something else. It's just such a deep, leveled record, both sonically and musically.

And I thought it was fucking boring on first listen. This album and Phil's works in general are really something you have to consider and actively listen to to fully understand. I thought the love for this album was unwarranted at first as well. I was wrong

From my understanding, it's an album about him going off into nature and attempting to drown himself as a result of a break up (that last part may be inaccurate, but the first line on the opening track is about him and his ex gf/ex band partner breaking up). He fails to do so but ends up almost freezing to death out in the wilderness. Various songs are about him exploring his surroundings and reminiscing on past memories and figuring that he doesn't want to die, and then on Samurai Sword it's a matter of survival; him killing a bear to stay alive. By the end of the album, we know that he made it out alive (My Warm Blood). But the atmosphere of that song and his delivery just isn't that upbeat or happy. He doesn't seem particularly pleased with surviving, or maybe he isn't pleased with how he went about surviving (killing an animal).

This is partly conjecture on my part but the general idea is agreed upon that it's an album about attempting suicide via drowning, almost freezing to death, but making it through. The thin vocals and instrumentation paint images of a man freezing to death in the wilderness pretty well, in my opinion. When lyrics and music (and production) marry so well, I just really enjoy it.

>>54589244
Yeah, this album and basically any of Phil's work took me time to vibe with. I never seem to like anything on first listen, and this album in particular put me off for a long while.

The albums I've listened to have been good to great, but I've been going through it chronologically and taking my time in doing so. Lost Wisdom, Dawn, and Wind's Poem are what I've enjoyed so far. I'll probably end up liking them more as time passes because that's how every Phil-fronted album I've ever listened to works.

What I'm wondering is if his Microphones stuff outside of It Was Hot..., The Glow Pt. 2, and Mount Eerie is good. I have it downloaded and everything but I just never got around to it.

But to be honest I haven't listened to a whole lot of Mount Eerie. There's a lot more content there than in The Microphones' discog.

Don't Wake Me Up is definitely worth checking out. In terms of mood it's like the midpoint between It Was Hot and The Glow pt. 2. Really bittersweet stuff.

It was hot takes place during the relstionship, and begins with a song comparing the growing of his love to the decay of a body, forshadowing what is to come. It is established that the relationship and to phils entire life is governed by these forces: the pull (into a relationshop), the breeze(?), the glow (his intense love) the gleam (his perception of his partners love for him). He remains loyal to the commands of these forces his whole life untill Mount Eerie, when in the afterlife he finally has complete clarity and becomes master of his own universe.
Also phil dies at the end of the glow pt. 2 sorry to burst ur bubble.
