I don't really know how we got here
or where here is
though there are many people around us
all I can think of right now is her
she's laughing
maybe I said something charming
maybe something unexpected happened
in any case it's warm
genuine
now she's not laughing but smiling,
though not her usual sunbeam grin
a thin, faint, absolutely beautiful crescent moon
something is on her mind
I take her in,
all of her with the hyperfunctioning eyes of the infatuated
her skin is dusky, smooth, flawless,
the gorgeous dark color made 1000 times more exotic and intense thanks to the pale blue ocean her face swims above
the dress is simple,
unadorned, but pretty
the perfect shade
as flawless as her skin
her hair is tied into a free flowing loose ponytail,
draped over her shoulder
clean, but unstyled
the distinct smell of flowers
now the sad thoughtful smile is gone
and so are all the people
we are alone
we are together
she's playing a guitar now
sitting in front of me, legs crossed, on the ground
her ponytail has come undone
her cheeks are rosy
her arms support a beginner's hands
weak, slow, inaccurate
but she moves with such grace
her delicate fingers glide and flow, more beautiful in motion than all the virtuosos in the world
as she plucks the synthetic strings of the instrument
a quiet, pretty, simple melody,
the air pressure in her throat plucks something altogether more beautiful
her voice is heaven
in this moment,
there is no single thing greater than her
and she has no idea
I open my mouth to tell her all this and more
but no words can escape
and before I know it
I've cut off her angelic music
my mouth stops her mouth
and sweetness explodes
her lips are lightning rods
her kiss is divine fire
I don't know where we came from
where we're going or where we are
but I know, in this moment
we are closer to God than anyone
