haven't seen one of these in a while

>Who is Dean Blunt?

Dean Blunt is an enigmatic singer-songwriter, member of the possibly defunct Hype Williams, and former collaborator of Inga Copeland. After a run of narcotized pop deconstruction under the Hype Williams moniker, Blunt and Copeland released a single record on Hyperdub records and then parted ways. Towards the end of their partnership and since its termination, Blunt has put out a steady stream of music under his own name. Known for the mystery surrounding his persona, his antagonism towards the press, and his totally unique approach to pop music, Dean Blunt is one of music's enduring mysteries.

“Let’s not start a war - it’s not enough.” - Dean Blunt

The James Ferraro Collab, some various singles, 7"s. Lemme know if youre looking for anything and I'll try to upload it

===================================================

>Where do I start?

If you want to get into Dean Blunt's abstract heartbreak, I'd recommend starting with The Redeemer or The Narcissist II. The former is a melancholic R&B breakup record, and the latter is a horrifying, lo-fi glimpse into a relationship, torn apart by arguing and domestic violence

Black is Beautiful is also a good starting place if you want a more challenging listen. It's a real labyrinth of a record.

i love you dean

I liked Black Metal a whole lot (probably aoty 2014), then checked out Redeemer and Narcissist too, also good. Didn't care for any of the Hype Williams stuff at all.

>> No.54457061

does anyone have "Watch the Throne 2"? it wasn't an official thing blunt uploaded but it was available online as a bootleg. can't find that shit now

But anyway not much to talk about with dean

He won the nme but sent his bodyguard to pickup the award for him. based as fuck

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyzE5QH_x2I once again sent his bodyguard to read his poetry. Brilliant stuff good listen.

It took me a long time to realize that hype Williams wasn't the same one that directed hip hop music videos

Also the redeemer is one of the greatest albums of our time.

Prolly flaxen, but it's one of those albums you always have to listen to all the way through, so I often don't think of it in terms of individual tracks

It was a good breakup

Brutal is one of my least favorite, it relies too much on his shoddy voice. My favorite is by far id Walls of Jericho followed by All Dogs Go To Heaven and Demon.

It's just ferraro and dean fucking around on the piano and dean humming shit

Not a big fan of Walls Of Jericho, it works good in the context of the album but as a stand alone track it just gets repetitive. Demon however, and All Dogs Go To Heaven are great

I tried to get into their stuff because my sister recommended it. I like the mysteria behind their personas but their music didn't really back that whole vibe they built up around them.

Bodyguard is just for show. it's making parody of hip hop and such.
In deans words "i feel more comfortable with having another brother in the room with me"

He did a live show once. where the whole night he just had kevin hart playing in the background and drake and nicki minaj music blasting at full volume. in darkness where you couldn't see him
until the last 20minutes he finally started playing stuff off redeemer then he left.

Dean Blunt's ability to both parody and realize archetypes is one of a kind.

but majority of his life has been in london. he was in a london parody band itself as a bass player Graffiti Island

Yea you right I don't really know if hes parody. but he wants to remain undefined. and "stay out of it" like he says in lush

I like his music and his art is just icing on the cake

forever,100,lush,50 cent cmon m8s

Black is beautiful is okay for the texture but it's just a collection of songs really. track 9 is goat.

Agree with the rest of the list

>> No.54458571

saw mr. blunt last year in LA.

the venue was fogged out throughout the night and it was completely dark except for a few lights around. he started with some songs from the redeemer then played through nearly all of black metal.

its hard to describe the feeling of being there. the music itself was beautiful but dean's presence was very intimidating. i dont think he ever directly spoke with the audience but he would stare directly at people in the crowd and pace around the stage looking like he was ready to start fighting someone.

>> No.54458607

>>54458495
I'll be going to art school myself so I'm trying to see where he's coming from. I'm not quite sure if I dig the ambiguity he leaves open in his art; it seems a bit lazy.
I'm like the music though:

Thought Black Metal was crap. Starts out decently and 50 Cent is one of his best stand alone tracks but I'm not a fan of anything else on that album.

Black Is Beautiful is amazing imo, on par with The Redeemer and definitely the best Blunt/Copeland work.

>> No.54458706

>>54458607
I think thats what he wants his art to feel like "lazy"and hes high 24/7 so ya I think thats what he's going for to give you that feeling.

but it's not he puts alot of effort into it.

I mean his music is itself is pure samples but you can't really tell.

the song the redeemer. he sampled fleetwood mac oh daddy. and a couple words from puff daddy on the song victory.

>> No.54459119

>>54457257
thanks but i was asking about Watch the Throne 2, the second one. first one is readily available, but the second one i can't find anymore. it was a bootleg recording of their set from Unsound that year. similar vibe but twice as long.
