Anyone recommend a good passive bridge pickup for me to look in to?

The guitar shop had a couple of "pickup sample" guitars AKA, 5 Squiers with different pickups in each one

The only one that I really liked on what they had bridge wise was a DiMarzio D'activator-X, it had a certain level of clarity to it and volume in general the other ones didn't have with the same thick distortion on all of them.

I could pick it up for $80 but I want to check some more out, the maximum im willing to spend is $150, and it would have to really blow me away.

If not something else, how do you guys feel about said pickup?

>> No.54436807

Do like the sound and feel? I have a 50s vibe mexican strat and I think its great.
If you have a mediocre amp now and $ burning a hole in your pocket, I think you'd do better to put it towards amplification.
A lot of guys hate the profiling stuff but I can get great sounds from my POD.

up to you. it's true that you really can immediately feel and hear the difference in a serious guitar though

This guitar is more for metal type stuff a good 80% of the time, I'm running 11-49 gauge strings in open C, every thing I've ever done has been put a lot of distortion on, and I have hit on a really good balance on my amps/pedals that gives me really deep smooth bass sound without sacrificing the clarity of my higher notes, it's hard to explain, the most common first sentence out of someones mouth playing my setup is "That's really, really clear..."

I'm really bad at explaining myself.

This is simple yet objective color spectrum analyzer. To get to cyan, which is probably would you'd begin to consider blue, you'd still have to move halfway through the green spectrum.

frankly, no, and it's extremely likely to be a shitty guitar as a result. I'm optimistic, though, because I have a couple of luthier friends, I'm very good at researching things on the Internet, I have a library card and know how to use it, AND I know people with good woodworking tools.

The basic plan is a through-neck SG with no neck angle (which means a different bridge), three humbuckers, 24 frets, weird switching (each pickup has an individual off / coil-split / full humbucker toggle instead of a 3-way selector), weird knobs (3 volumes and a passive treble/bass setup).

Omitting the neck angle makes shaping easier, but I'll still need to angle the headstock because I don't want string trees. Considering that I'll need to laminate the neck/center block, I'll probably just do a scarf joint through the fucker to avoid exposing the shorter grain.

I'll be sure to post plenty of pictures of the process. I think I have one of the tree.

oh, you mean as far as appearance. I'd need wood from more than one tree, or I'd need to partially finish some pieces before gluing it all together. If I laminate the neck with a darker wood (I was thinking wenge, maybe?) it'll look something like this when it's done.

I'm normally a woodwind player, and I've been fucking around with the guitar in the past year or so. Nothing serious- I barely know three chords or so. But today I figured out how the fourth fret on the first string is a whole step down from the first fret of the second string and that this continues for most of the fretboard and lots of shit just clicked. I've begun to memorize which notes correspond to which frets on which strings, and now I can play major scales and dominant 7th scales from any note starting on the first string (as in the low E string). I watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QcEoGrmpqc and am able to get the major G 7th, dominant 7th, minor 7th, and minor 7th flat 5 chords really easily. I'm able to play major scales and dominant 7th scales starting on the first string in 16th notes at 72 BPM now, and have even started to solo and play chords over basic blues standards like Freddie Freeloader. What's a good way to learn more about jazz guitar? It feels like something clicked today.

I just got here and I get to say it so soon?
>Remember kids, experience is only as creditable as how it's interpreted.

Here's a painting I like.
Artists tend to specialize quite a bit, painting, sketching, composing for a solo classical guitar, drinking, smoking, being depressed.
But they don't mix visual arts and the auditory arts (musical arts? Maybe that's too narrow...) as much as I'd like.
I think it'd be great if every image had a well fitting musical composition accompanying it.
Sure, it's common in film and what not, but I find that it's not as intimate. A single image may have many things to say, many things that may be interpreted musically for dozens of minutes.
I can vaguely envision some of it now.
Some artists creating things like a women sawing her arm off with a look of serenity on her face, with something like Yakety Sax playing.

There's no right or wrong plucking hand technique, some lend themselves better to different styles of music but ultimately it comes down to whatever feels comfortable. There are bad habits though, so stop yourself if you start overusing your index or playing random bass notes.

Standard classical (E A D thumb, G index, B middle, e ring) will build muscle memory and good form, so maybe just practice simple fingerstyle pieces with that for a while.

Don't get too caught up in the cerebral side of jazz getting a good feel for the music is more important for a solid foundation, you can study chord theory as you go along.

Start by transcribing bebop solos (charlie parker, charlie christian, barney kessel, tal farlow, lee konitz etc..) Then you can move on to modal stuff and finally chord melody.

>>54446450
It's a floating pickup (not attached to the body) so it actually sounds pretty acoustic, but with a tone knob so you can get a more rolled off electric sound. I like to use bronze strings for that acoustic sound though.

I switched to roundwounds, and it sounded great, but I was getting so many blisters that I couldn't practice between sessions. Half-wounds are bright and feel almost as smooth as flatwounds. Yep, that's what happens here in Brazil.

You go to a store, most employees will be doing something else and ignore you if you need help. There's also the opposite situation where someone who clearly didn't want to be there will show up to "help you". They have (and they make sure to display it) no incentive whatsoever to sell.

If you want to try an instrument, you have to ask first and they will do it with the worst face and mood on earth. They will also stay by your side staring at you while you play. You don't usually have the guts to ask to try more than 2 guitars.

Ernie Ball strings cost $12. The very few high end instruments are usually locked in a glass cases or up high, you basically can't try them unless you're going to buy and are just checking for flaws.

That sounds the same as it was here back before I started playing in the late 90s up to about 2008. They were always chatting with the black guy playing a piano or standing around looking pissed about nothing.

Back around that time I did my best to dress like I was a rich kid with more money than sense (I had just barely enough for a nice guitar) and no one even attempted to kiss my ass take my money. I turned and left without even trying anything. The next time I went last year, all they had were squiers and plywood acoustics.

I went to another place in a different town and instead of the failed rocker douchebags with gelled hair working there who scorn the idea of an acoustic, it was fat old guys who hated anything that wasn't blues or bluegrass. That was where I had a greasy man watch me like a hawk.

I still haven't bought a nice guitar. Probably for the best as I'm not all that good, but I shouldn't have to put on a recital to buy a guitar.

Been playing for about 10 years. I'm not in a band, I just play for myself. It's more a hobby (A damn good one) than profession for me, although I am proficient at the instrument.

influenced by Vai, Hendrix, Chili Peppers, Dethklok, any jazz guitarist, Guthrie, Joe, SRV, etc, etc, yadda yadda.

play ONLY with d'addario strings 9-42, and with Jazz III plectrums.

Pickups are Crunch Lab (bridge), and Air Classic (in neck), My guitar is modded with a heavier bridge and 500k pots.

I push the gain thru a modded SD-1, and thru a cocktail of the proper pre amp tubes for a Van Halen esque gain. Um, pretty much it.

I mostly just imrpov solo over backing tracks and songs. I have a couple fully written songs with a Hendrix vibe using mainly the clean channel (think wind cries mary and Have you ever been to electric ladyland).

think that's about it.

If any St. louis players are reading this, I recommend checking out Gravity Strings. Those guys have a great collection of gear and they can repair/set up anything you want.

The thing about shred is most guitarists misuse it. It just sounds awkwardly out of place in most contexts that guitarists use it in. When it's used properly, like to accent a frenetic part of a song or to build tension in a solo, it can be amazing, but it just sounds forced in most contexts.

>> No.54455928

That's also true of playing above the 12th fret and too much harmony fill in arrangements. It takes a very light touch of it to make you and the song sound better. Now balls to the wall dueling shred is epic and feels like baroque counterpoint.

They are.

They are also, however, very peculiar instruments with very narrow fretboards, unique pickups, shape and features (such as glossy bubinga fretboard, which is highly unusual).

Keep saving, but there's a chance you'll grow to hate or love them in the future as a guitar player. When that time comes you can just purchase a better suited instrument if you dislike the Ricks.

Also, I hope you're referring to John's 6-string Rick. He also used a 12-string Rickenbacker that isn't really an all-around versatile guitar. It's more of a studio and very specific equipment.

Apparently Duncan's is the closes reproduction whereas, sound-wise, Lollar's is about 6/10. I have no clue about this:

Lollar pickups are praised as one of the best in the market nowadays. Generally considered a step-up from companies like Seymour Duncan, Dimarzio etc. They are also generally more expensive than these brands.

Taste is extremely subjective and I won't discredit your personal preferences because I think that would be narrow minded and immature. Some people for example prefer the stock pickups on Squier Classic Vibe Telecasters than the ones in the $2.2k Fender American Vintage Reissue ones. That being said, Lollar pickups are seriously incredible.

I have one telecaster with Lollar 52Ts which previously had Seymour Duncans (Vintage Lead 54 and SM-3). I was not satisfied with the SDs and got the Lollars. They were incomparably better to me.

I also have a LP with Lollar Imperial humbuckers and I have another one with Seymour Duncan Seth Lovers. I also prefer the sound of the Lollars though in this case the difference isn't as extreme as it was in the telecaster. The SD Seth Lovers are still pretty amazing.
