The first volume is very engaging through and through imo; the second volume is less Brian-centric (obviously) so it may not hold one's attention quite as much.

I don't know of anything that I'd consider "the next step" after listening to Song Cycle. An argument could be made for OTC, but I've always kind thought they were more Beatles-y than Beach Boys, in spite of them covering Do You Like Worms? and the a capella sections on Black Foliage. An argument could be made for it though. I just drew the arrow to Song Cycle since the album is instrumentally similar to SMiLE, somewhat; plus, I mean, VDP was a very key contributor to SMiLE. So it didn't seem like a big stretch to throw Song Cycle in there.

Been down that road. Haven't liked what I heard. I don't think I like this type of music for it's own sake but when it's good, it's mind blowingly good. There's just so many Sunshine/psychedelic/baroque pop albums ala the Beach Boys that are just mediocre and too derivative for their own good.
Jesus Christ though, that song is so SMiLE it's actually kind of turning me off. They're definitely directly taking some chord progressions and melodies from Beach Boys songs.

Says me and every layman I've ever talked to. If you like Pet Sounds, you only have two routes:
A. The albums between 1967 and 1971
B. Compilations

Sunflower and Surf's Up are the go-to after Smile. Friends and Wild Honey are roughly interchangeable. Everything else is an afterthought

The compilations often have some obscure gems to make there early and later eras digestible.

After you've absorbed both of those is when you go to Today!, All Summer Long, Summer Days, etc...

You only go to Love You and Adult Child when you have the understanding that the Beach Boys aren't dadrock, and that Brian Wilson is proto-Daniel Johnston.

???

But Today and Summer Days are both great precursors to the Pet Sounds sound. If you like the instrumentation on Pet Sounds, those logically follow. I listened to Today! after Pet Sounds -> SMiLE and it was a comfortable transition because it was instrumentally familiar. Summer Days was equally as familiar.

And I don't think I'd ever recommend those cash-in compilations by Capitol, just out of principle.

>Sunflower and Surf's Up are the go-to after Smile.

Why? They're not really similar instrumentally, they both have contributions from all of the band members which is a big leap to someone who's only familiar with stuff Brian wrote.

And why not Smiley Smile?

>After you've absorbed both of those is when you go to Today!, All Summer Long, Summer Days, etc...

The only barrier of entry to these albums is the lyrical content, which someone can look past of they want more of the orchestral instrumentation (this doesn't apply to All Summer Long).

>You only go to Love You and Adult Child when you have the understanding that the Beach Boys aren't dadrock, and that Brian Wilson is proto-Daniel Johnston.

Brian himself said that he would recommend listening to Pet Sounds, then listening to Love You to new listeners of the Beach Boys.

Sunflower and Surf's Up has Til I Die, All I Wanna Do, Cool Cool Water, This Whole World, etc. which all logically follows Pet Sounds. Not Good to My Baby or Don't Hurt My Little Sister. Most people can't appreciate something like Please Let Me Wonder, which as one /mu/ poster once described, is an "uninspired ballad". I disagree, but whatever.

Smiley Smile is a shit show if you don't have the stereo mix.

Brian doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about half the time. He hasn't had a grasp on his music in 40 years.

I'm not talking about the cash-in compilations as much as I mean The Warmth of the Sun and Sounds of Summer. But Endless Summer is the definitive 1961-1966 hits compilation. If you're listening to Pet Sounds, you already know who the Beach Boys are, and you've already formed an opinion on their ostensible 'surf' songs. That is why you have two routes: forwards to their we-don't-do-surfing albums or backwards to the hits. Today! is a regression of Pet Sounds.

>Sunflower and Surf's Up has Til I Die, All I Wanna Do, Cool Cool Water, This Whole World, etc. which all logically follows Pet Sounds.

It also has straight rockers like "Got to Know the Woman" or "Student Demonstration Time".

>Most people can't appreciate something like Please Let Me Wonder, which as one /mu/ poster once described, is an "uninspired ballad". I disagree, but whatever.

Anyone with a critical ear should be able to hear the proto Pet Sounds vibe of side b of Today, especially someone who specifically wants more of the orchestral pop on Pet Sounds. That anon you talked to is apparently a poor sample size, considering he doesn't pick up on the beauty of the ballads on side b.

>Smiley Smile is a shit show if you don't have the stereo mix.

It's still a reasonable follow up. Half of the record is familiar if the listener has listened to SMiLE, and if they're down for more progressive/psychedelic vibes, then the material on Smiley Smile is exactly what they're looking for, not the saccharine sunshine pop on Sunflower, for example.

>Brian doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about half the time. He hasn't had a grasp on his music in 40 years.

I won't disagree with that, but his reasoning was likely that Pet Sounds and Love You are both self portraits; if you're interested in Brian's autobiographical music, then those are the two albums to go for.

>That is why you have two routes: forwards to their we-don't-do-surfing albums or backwards to the hits.

This is such a rigid way of looking at their oeuvre though. Besides, the two routes I have following Pet Sounds are exactly what you say they should be" one to the "we don't do surfing anymore" and the other in the direction of their surfing heyday.

>Today! is a regression of Pet Sounds.

Say what?

If someone wants more conventional orchestral pop, then Today is exactly what they're looking for, not SMiLE.

“I was sitting backstage after the 1974 Grammys with Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s lyricist) and John Lennon. This was when Brian was really having some mental issues. During the course of the conversation, I kept seeing Brian out of the corner of my eye, just kind of staring at us from different angles. Finally, he came up to the table, bent down and whispered in my ear ‘Hey Alice, introduce me to John Lennon.’ I couldn’t BELIEVE that these two men had never met! They were virtually neck and neck in the 60’s as the greatest bands on the planet, and I’m SURE they must have crossed paths at some point. But then I thought to myself, ‘Wow, if they REALLY have never met, I’m going to be the one to introduce them and become a part of rock history!’ So I merely said, ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, this is Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was very cordial and polite, saying things like ‘Hello Brian, I’ve always wanted to meet you. I’ve always admired your work, and Paul and I considered Pet Sounds one of the best albums ever made.’ Brian thanked him and walked away, at which point Lennon went right back to his conversation like nothing had happened. About ten minutes later, Brian came by our table again, leaned down and whispered something to Bernie, and all of a sudden, Bernie was saying ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was just as cordial and polite as the first time, saying essentially the same thing about always wanting to meet him. As soon as Brian walked away, John looked at both of us and casually said in his typical Liverpudlian accent, ‘I’ve met him hundreds of times. He’s not well, you know.’”

Where is the actual reasoning for this though? Going from Pet Sounds to Smile to a best of compilation? That's dirty to me. Going from Smile to albums with significantly fewer Brian Wilson contributions? Going from Surf's Up to Today? Going from their surf/cars phase to Love You? Some of this is just clumsy without some explanation as to why you make these connections.

Also, I don't really see why your personal experience with what people ask for after listening to Pet Sounds should have that much bearing (referring back to your "Nobody says any of those things after listening to those albums" comment). I recommended my friend listen to Pet Sounds and he specifically asked if Brian made more somber orchestral pop, so I told him to listen to Today, because Smile goes way beyond somber orchestral pop.

I can understand where you're coming from, but I still don't get some of the connections you're drawing or why you're drawing them. I don't think a good way to introduce someone to a band is to just give them four albums to listen to and an order to listen to them in, and not give any reasons as to why. I don't believe in the philosophy of just spoonfeeding "the good stuff" and then being like "Did you listen to that mostly unrelated material? Now listen to the lesser known stuff in some unspecific order." I'm trying to make my chart kind of specific, and for critical listeners, I guess.

Aight back from class! Okay my only beef with this is the idea of starting or branching off from Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds is very unique and experimental compared to the rest of their discography (minus SMiLE and its incarnations of course.) I feel that maybe you should have multiple starting points similar to the amazing Swans flowchart (side note: Brian Wilson and Michael Gira forever my biggest heroes!) Either that or like have Pet Sounds and SMiLE be where Spiderland and Soundtracks for the Blind are in the post-rock chart (the "I'm ready/logical conclusion" ones). Like you can maybe have one starting point at the song California Girls/the album Today!, one around the Pet Sounds/SMiLE, one around Smiley Smile/Wild Honey, one around Sunflower/Surf's Up, etc.

Also massive respect for the Van Dyke Parks post. Maybe add like an Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal, or AnCo album around there. Like maybe have Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished with Smiley and Wild Honey cuz of its lofi psych feel. Have an Olivia Tremor Control album in the Pet Sounds/SMiLE area cuz of the sound collage grandoise feel. An Of Montreal album around Sunflower/Surf's Up. Like yeah we don't need THAT many other artists in there, but it would be maybe somewhat cool to have to show where the influence has gone in terms of Beach Boys and kinda fits the fact that the chart's trying to be so comprehensive that it even has documentaries/books (another cool addition btw.)

> Pet Sounds is very unique and experimental compared to the rest of their discography (minus SMiLE and its incarnations of course.)

Well, compared to the rest of the discography, sure. But the album isn't really so experimental that it's an awkward entry point. It also contains their most well known hits (save for certain early career cuts like I Get Around and Surfin' USA), and it serves as a really good entry point since it's a fusion of the baroque/orchestral instrumentation Brian started using in '65 and the psychedelia that Brian messed with in late '66 and '67, so it provides a clean branch.

I'm also just afraid of starting anywhere but on Pet Sounds because pre Pet Sounds albums are really weak as entry points. They all have at least one song that would make most people roll their eyes (lyrically speaking). As blissful as California Girls is, musically, that would be TOTALLY lost on a first-time listener, who would likely just tune into the lyrics and be turned off, feeling like their belief that the Beach Boys were all surf and California has just been justified. I would just be afraid to use that stuff as an entry point.

I'm hesitant to add a bunch of artists in spite of the fact that I like the idea of showing off the influence of the Beach Boys. Those are some ideas that are maybe worth exploring in a "How to get into the Beach Boys (and related artists)" chart, maybe?

If you read anything about Syd or Brian from the people who knew him, you'd know that those two had a knack for faking their craziness.

Van Dyke Parks
>Oh it's a power trip all right. But I can get behind that. I can get behind the way Brian does it. It's funny to watch him when he can't find something he owns. It's cute when he ignores someone else's needs, because he can always plead insanity.

Loren Daro (friend)
>He was always bullied and intimidated by these people, and found that the only way he could get away from them was to feign mental illness – hiding in his bedroom with a pillow over his head, acting erratic and unstable, etc. He admitted to me many times that this was a theatrical performance and a purposeful sham to get off the road.

>He performed this act for so long, and with everyone in his life (with the exception of myself and a few trusted friends), that eventually he became pathological. Brian’s descent was exacerbated by his excess intake of food, tobacco, cocaine, speed, downers, more LSD, as well as many other drugs given to him by, among others, Terry Satchen, as Brian related to me.

>> No.54436432

>>54436237
The quote from Loren Daro is not confirmed, and also Loren Daro is the guy who originally gave Brian acid. He's a new age type person who probably doesn't really have that good of an understanding of Brian's mental health. Van Dyke Parks is an odd one because he has some weird cynical bent towards Brian for some reason. It's no doubt that cocaine and speed, as well as illegally-prescribed pharmaceuticals from Dr. Landy fucked Brian's brain up, but it's also no secret that he still hears voices, and recollects that he has heard them since shortly after his first acid trip.

it's sad that brian fears dying. in the 60s he was a very spiritual guy into lots of occult stuff. i personally think a lot of the medications he's been on for the past 25+ years have dulled his spiritual senses and he's lost touch with some things.

fearing death when you're his age and have seen your whole family die is a sign of some mental regression imo. you should be able to embrace the inevitable. i think brian is confused and has been for a long time.

Well, the compromise I called for should indicate that I don't consider either of those albums "non-essential". Just less essential than the four albums with the red border. Smiley Smile's production was extremely unique at the time, but its songwriting leaves something to be desired considering half of it is material from Smile. Today is a phenomenal pop record, but that's all it is, and I think someone would only really enjoy it if they're down with the orchestral, sad songs on Pet Sounds. Meanwhile, many of the songs on Surf's Up and Sunflower at least deserved to be listened to directly.

Also, ultimately, I just don't want to bloat the "essential listening" list. If this was any other band, I would agree with you. But Beach Boys have definitely had a career worthy of having six essential albums. Having six essential albums isn't normal, and it isn't supposed to be normal, but still deserved here. The Smiley Smile to SMiLE comparison is damn unfair since SMiLE is obviously held in a VERY high regard, being the highest rated album on metacritic in terms of albums released since 2000 (so newly released; non-reissues,) and that both albums have similar tracks but VERY different feels to them.
