wonderful how he's evolved so much since 1983. imo his most important release was cosmogramma, electronic music has never sounded the same to me since that release.

>>54380902
true in a lot of cases, theres just a lot more shit idm that sounds too similar.

>>54380918
great opinion backed up with great examples.

Love it. I'm excited for the new Captain Murphy album coming out this year too.

>> No.54381171

love him. captain murphy is cool. random but so perfect that he's related to john coltrane.

>> No.54381175

Some people will think i'm crazy, but I think he's one of the most important musicians of our generation.

Also, does anyone know if he ever officially released the extended version of Coronus, The Terminator?

I've only listened to you're dead! and I was pretty underwhelmed. Had some really great moments idk why>>54380918 says he's trash but maybe it's because there's so much hype around him. I've been meaning to listen to comsogramma but I haven't found a decent torrent. So far I think he's pretty cool- just underwhelming. Like Kendrick Lamar on a lower scale, but I like him a lot more than kendrick

I've only listened to 3 of his albums, and they were out of order (UTQC, Cosmo, then YD). You're Dead! was easily in my top 5 last year, though I feel like the first half was fairly better than the second half. Cosmogramma has some great moments and is really solid overall, it just gets a little too hectic in a sort of uncontrolled way for me (as opposed to You're Dead! getting hectic in a very controlled way). Until the Quiet Comes is his true masterpiece imo. It makes perfect sense in his discography and has some of the most gorgeous melodies of the decade. I just can't help but get lost in it whenever I listen to it. It shows a sort of passionate restraint by keeping things "quiet" but there are still so many layers of beautiful sounds. I sort of wish the penultimate track was actually the end but the last track is good too so it's not too big of the problem. Overall I feel like he's one of the most consistent artists of the decade with Cosmogramma being an 8/10, You're Dead! being a 9/10, and Until the Quiet Comes being a 10/10.

Some of the beats he does are also amazing, with Between Friends and Wesley's Theory being the two that come to mind immediately. I'm not too big of a fan of Captain Murphy but I don't really mind it and will probably pick up whatever he drops as him. I also love FlyLo for introducing me to Thundercat because I really enjoy his music as well.

You should listen to Los Angeles. I think it's about on par with UTQC (I don't know how popular that opinion is though)

>> No.54381681

>>54381339
I agree. Don't get me wrong I love every one of his releases but as chaotic and random as cosmogramma was, it didn't peak my interest like LA, and You're Dead! did.

>> No.54381735

I couldn't listen to Cosmogramma for like a year or two. I was driving my car the day it came out, I had bought the CD and was listening to it when a car hit me on the side and I spun out of the highway and totaled it, thankfully didn't hit anyone and only had a small concussion. I go to his concerts every time he comes to NYC, if you ever have the chance, do it. Nothing like his albums, he goes bananas with the production and almost everything is a remix of something. Have a blast every time.

It makes me wonder what beats Kendrick decided to not use on TPAB. I assume they were great and that whatever Kendrick rapped over them was nice, but wouldn't have fit the album thematically. Flylo said he's gonna probably use them somehow, and considering most of them were planned for the new Captain Murphy project, seems like we're gonna get them soon. It would be fucking nice if we ever got the versions Kendrick rapped over, but seems like we never would.

>> No.54384058

I was a big Cosmogramma head but it's now clear that Until The Quiet Comes is his best album

I think he should stick to producing/Captain Murphy/EPs for a long awhile until another album

>>54381175

Love FlyLo. He's one of my favorite producers, I love his unique blend of IDM and jazz along with hip-hop. He's a capable rapper too, which is cool. You're Dead was one of my favorite albums of last year. Caught him twice already. Even got to say hi to him after the show last time I saw him. Didn't get to talk much, but he seemed really nice.

Seen him twice. Once before YD and once after. Honestly all critiques about YD being weaker are some of the funniest posts on /mu/. You don't know anything until you experience it live with its own mix alongside all his other material into one incredible set. I almost forgot the fact that he busts out Captain Murphy regularly and his visuals are top fucking notch.

True, after YD his live set was fucking sick.

I saw him in Toronto and he was gettin all mad and yelling for someone to get him water. Another song went by with no water and he was like "some nigga's gettin fired". Then he stepped outta the cube and started doing Murphy material. Shit was hilarious.

Genuinely, LA and Cosmog reshaped my outlook on electronic music. I was getting kind of bored, and then I heard those. I'm not saying there weren't others unique and that would have done the same had I heard them. But I stopped listening to electronic music in 2003. Heard FlyLo, starting listening again .
