Kunta Kinte is a fictional character played by Levar Burton in the tv miniseries roots. Roots, unlike tpab however, is an interesting and thoughtful look at the history of blacks in america.

>1. How is this innovative it's just funk/jazz influenced
It's innovative in that is it is bringing ideas of jazz (specifically fusion and free jazz), spoken word, funk, and experimental production into the mainstream hip hop world. This is no cLOUDDEAD, but for a triple-A rap album this is radically different.

>2. What is this album even commentary on
Race in America, loyalty, the duality of wealth and human happiness.

>3. Who the fuck is George Clinton and kunta
George Clinton was the vocalist for Parliament and Funkadelic. He's the Miles Davis of funk.

Kunta Kinte was a real slave who famously lost his foot. He was made famous in the TV miniseries Roots. "King Kunta" is thus a symbol of black empowerment.

Not even close to the level that Kendrick did it. Tribe has some seriously amazing production and even some verses that stick out still but I think even Ali, Tip and Bob Power would look at the production of this album and cream.

Tribe had a lot of the boom bap type soul shit that a lot of NY ended up taking (Kanye and Just Blaze as well much later).

This is more of a funk than a soul. Old west coast rappers are actually a better comparison. But still nothing was to this level of infusion. This is hardly even a hip hop record from a production stand point.

RYM review

"First of all i want to say,i'm not really fan for any "hip-hop" "Rap" "music" because i feel inside me,this music way is not "music" 100% at all..I listen music at least 20 years and i respect any lebel and any her face she have..But i have some standards on my head for her and any of you i believe..When i listen something i want to listen music with music organs or some echos, instrumentations and anyway some melodies..I count on that things and NOT on any lyrics, words or verses...If i want to listen or read lyrics i go to buy some book to read and not one cd..So for me on music the most important is MUSIC and not lyrics or verse.."Hip hop" music and her fans count on lyrics and not so much for music..I have listen many "Hip hop" classic albums and really try to understand that music..Some songs and albums like me because i find some music inside or some good tempos..But again im not gonna crazy for that things...I watch the ratings of "Kendrick Lamar" or "Kanye West" and really i shocked..I respect and believe on RYM users..They made me better and give me all day music with theirs reviews and good ratings they give..But all this, the massive good ratings on that music way really i dont understand..I cant accept some lyrics or some verses can be stand for so few massive ratings..Really like a person i embarrassing to listen that music on my car or on my house loud..That vocals or that tempos..."Nas" as example has some men vocals..."Lamar" sound like girl to my ears and sorry but is what i take from him..Anyway really i want RYM users continue to listen music and give ratings for her and not for any lyrics or verse...Really i dont know what more i tell for so massive ratings on that music.."

I know that anon was being an ignorant assbag, but this post is cringe dude. Black people are too accepting? Acceptance should be your mantra in this age. Accepting of all people (race, sex, sexuality, etc.)

Your domain? Rap was inherently black when it originated, and it's roots in sampling/the inventiveness and opportunism of DJs and MCs at the time should be held in high esteem (and it is)... but that was long ago. It's 20-fucking-15. There are no 'domains'. We live on the internet. Music is not territorial.

I can't tell whether or not you're black when you're posting on an anonymous image board, but even if I could could it wouldn't mean a goddamn thing to me.

I'm Canadian just like OP, except I know who fucking George Clinton is... lol. We just simply do not have the same race issues here. Period. Granted I only know a handful black people, and very few of them even ascribe to their own 'blackness', but a lot of the messages on this record are lost on me. But it has nothing to do with being white. It has to do with our government and general ideology. People is people. Kendrick writes some nice songs that I like to listen to with my gf while we smoke weed. He also writes some dumb songs that I do not enjoy. You do not own his music because you are black.

So you're white, don't even know many black people. Then why the shit do you think you're in any kind of position to tell a black person of who they should and shouldn't accept?

Because we're fucking humans you moron. "I'm black, so I get to choose who I accept in my lifetime"... Go fuck yourself. You're the reason intolerance and indecency still permeates Western culture.

Go ahead, view yourself as different from me, or anybody else. You're not. I don't have to know many black people to know that they all shit and piss like I do, or like to have sex, drink, smoke, and party just like I do.....or don't... like my white grandma.

Telling me to get serious and think about the question? What unbelievably idiotic thing to say. True, I'm not in any position to try to wrap my head around Kendrick's artistic statement, and if he ascribes to his blackness, all the power to him. I am however in a position to say that you do not own his music because being black is not a unifying ideology. Maybe I'm out to lunch, but isn't that some of the hypocritical inner-race racism Kendrick is getting at? Just because somebody else is black like you are doesn't make you the same. Sure there are similar struggles, and having somebody to relate to is important... but everybody is their own person. Maybe it would be different if I were part of a minority group, but I would be outraged if somebody expected me to cheer when Obama was elected just because I was black.

But I listen to Kendrick's music, draw inspiration from it, throw it on the speakers at parties, and even see his show when he comes to town. I make my own stuff (albeit post-punk/shoegaze, ie. non-rap music) and I would never expect some white kid across the country to think he owned my music just because he's white too. Fuck that shit man. Stop trying to glorify your existence through race. You're a shitty 4channer living in a shitty world just like me.

I never said what's best. I said fuck you, I will not accept your attempt at ownership over a pop record.

Thanks for bringing me that shoe, it certainly fits, but it really is that simple. Spend a year in Canada. We have rednecks and whitey-killing negroes as well, but the general population will kick your ass or give you flowers regardless of the colour of your skin. It does sicken me that we're only so few decades removed from systemic racism, but entire new generations of people have been born since then. We're not raised to hate anyone, and we fucking don't.

If black people continue to feel the need to 'rise up' as a collective people, shit's never going to change. All it takes is one kid to say "nah, fuck that, I'm gonna do my own thing". Even if you think you look like Kendrick Lamar, he doesn't owe you a damn thing. He doesn't owe me anything either, but at least I can acknowledge that.

I didn't start the thread boygenius.

I said I'm Canadian, LIKE OP.

And there it goes again. A "very white upbringing". THIS ISN'T A FUCKING THING. I don't have a 'white experience' and you don't have a 'black experience'. My upbringing was my dad inseminated my mom, felt obligated help his wife raise his kids and work everyday of his life, and now I shall do the same for mine. You hear the stereotypes that black fathers run out on their families, but I'm not going to go there. Yeah, I was lucky that way. But that's a pretty easy stereotype to break, don't you think? Just be a man and take care of your family...

It's not Candyland here. It's a somewhat functional way of life. We're all just trying to survive, and of course politicians, people in power, heads of corporations, etc. don't have your interests in mind. They don't have mine in mind either. It should be a shock to your system to know that even if you accumulate rich-white-man status and wealth, or become a rap star like Kendrick Lamar, or aspire to be a redneck in a trailer park... you and I are still the same and always will be. It's so unbelievable egotistical and arrogant to think otherwise. Fuck your black experience. Nigger is a word. There's plenty of words in this world. I'm not completely ignorant, I know what's happening in America is not just isolated incidents, but you can't put me in the same bracket as a racist cop just the same as I can't say "STAY AWAY FROM ME, YOU PROBABLY HAVE AIDS LIKE EASY E" .

There are your race blinders again. I dislike you as a person who uses race as a crutch. I don't dislike your race. But, I'm not even entirely sure what you consider your own race... is there a darkness level that determines whether you are or are not black? Do you relate with all visible minorities, or just the ones that look most like you and your pal Kendrick?

You also went directly to 'white privilege' when addressing my upbringing, which is actually kind of racist. What constitutes a 'black upbringing'? I thought you were literally implying that I had a dad, which I do. Because it seems as though even your own ideas of yourself rely on racial stereotypes. What is your upbringing? Give me even a basic summary - I can guarantee there is nothing 'black' about it. Because there is nothing about an upbringing that can be inherently racial. It's so stupid, dude.

Also, I'm not afraid of the word nigger. It's weightless to me. Rappers have reclaimed the term literally decades ago. It's yours, take it back. I don't ever feel the need to use it, because it's a stupid word.

Call it his Stankonia. Call it his Fear of a Black Planet. But these comparisons are of course easy to make. These albums were stellar left-hooks to already impressive uppercuts. Whether or not they were superior to their predecessors is irrelevant: the beauty comes in the fact that they're at least as good as them. And let's just roll with that for Kendrick.

The lyrics are personal, yet universal. Kendrick consistently darts the line between introspective reflection and extroverted demagoguery. It never feels forced, even when he sobs as on "u". Perhaps this is the greatest strength of the album: it's full, frontal honesty. Kendrick's come down to talk to us.

But even more impressive than his already-established-as-great lyricism is the production. Jazz and Funk influences are obvious, but more importantly DYNAMIC production that adapts to the track and the moods. The music knows Kendrick, and he knows the music. This forms a beautiful harmony that is the crux of To Pimp a Butterfly: Kendrick knows himself. He knows what is expected of him. And he fills that role spectacularly.

He's emerged from the coccoon but didn't quite become enlightened so most of the songs are bittersweet. Both are "experimental" and "innovative" when compared to the mainstream. Yeezus was written off as a Death Grips copycat, whereas TPAB is being hailed as a revolutionary jazz/soul/HH-fusion experiment that passed with flying colours. It's to do with Kendrick being far more inoffensive as a person compared to Kanye, I think. Yeezus certainly impressed me a lot more.
