The mood of the song and Kendrick's mood should be the same. A songs music and it's lyrics should be expected to adapt to each other, unless it's going for ironic juxtaposition. I don't see how that makes a record's production good

>> No.54327622

This is an album for egotistical pretentious backpackers to gather around and spew their garbage opinions about garbage meme rap. There's nothing new or innovate about this album. It's just you're typical pop rap album with jazz and funk influences.

That's the fucking problem with meme rap fans. They attempt to ruin good music by spitting their chewing tobacco on other people's shoes and slapping their dicks across each other's faces. "WOW THIS ALBUM IS SO BASED" "KENDRICK IS A GOAT!" That's all I fucking hear these days. This is the last straw.

Now I'm not one to say that I enjoy mainstream music, especially hip hop. It's contrived and mindless and should not be considered art by any means, but this shit's gotten fucking ridiculous.

While all of you retards fawn over the meme rap that has been constructed by the shitty internet and mainstream rappers, what your really doing is taking all the music that is held so hallowed and "primo" and perpetuating it into an endless cycle.

Pretentious hipster backpackers that know absolutely nothing about musical composition or what it means to be a musician will shit out their memes and opinions like usually; thereby upholding it as musical "genius" even though it's not.

Eventually, this album will become irrelevant and the fool you all once fawned over will crash and burn because people will finally wake up and realize that fact that this is complete garbage.

Essentially, fuck you meme rappers. You're a paradoxical, shit-eating tactics of bastardizing music will come to an end and you all will suffer.

Done my first listen and i can already tell, long-term, i'm going to look at this as his first truly great record.

Section 80 hasn't drawn me back to it that much, and as impressive as some aspects of GKMC were, the cinematic feel of it ended up working against it at times. Also, that album still had a couple of duds on it that were just hard to ignore (especially Real. jesus christ what an awful hook.)

First thing's first, i absolutely love the production on here. It's so dense and haunting. He sounds great over this sort of thing.

There are a number of highlights on here that i could point out, and the low-lights on here weren't nearly as bad as Real. But that last track... holy fuck, that thing was like the jazz/hip-hop equivalent of BBF3. I'm going to be returning to this a lot this year. Absolutely shattered my expectations.

Call it his Stankonia. Call it his Fear of a Black Planet. But these comparisons are of course easy to make. These albums were stellar left-hooks to already impressive uppercuts. Whether or not they were superior to their predecessors is irrelevant: the beauty comes in the fact that they're at least as good as them. And let's just roll with that for Kendrick.

The lyrics are personal, yet universal. Kendrick consistently darts the line between introspective reflection and extroverted demagoguery. It never feels forced, even when he sobs as on "u". Perhaps this is the greatest strength of the album: it's full, frontal honesty. Kendrick's come down to talk to us.

But even more impressive than his already-established-as-great lyricism is the production. Jazz and Funk influences are obvious, but more importantly DYNAMIC production that adapts to the track and the moods. The music knows Kendrick, and he knows the music. This forms a beautiful harmony that is the crux of To Pimp a Butterfly: Kendrick knows himself. He knows what is expected of him. And he fills that role spectacularly.

It's just lacking so much while it's claiming to be "unique". Kendrick tries to show that he has all this talent and he's shoving it in your face, but it comes off as pretentious and mediocre. He also forces social commentary so much in this album it distracts from the sloppy production that i supposedly one of the highlights. It doesn't offer any of the imagination that GKMC did and lyrically it feels lazy. His flows are still great, but how am I supposed to relate to Kendrick like I could in Real? For fucks sake even in m.A.A.d city he's still at least telling a story that anybody who has listened to any rap music can connect with him in some sort of way, and he also paints a character at the same time so even if you can't connect, he has this character made out for you like a true artist.

He's not shoving his black cock down your throat like he does in some songs here.

On the other side, this is why I love The Blacker The Berry. He's more of painting a character. Same thing with "u". Then I get to "i" and then this..

>I promised Dave I'd never use the phrase "fuck nigga"
>He said "think about what you saying, fuck niggas"

Seriously cringe-worthy. The reviews got to his head. Still a good album. Not great. Yes, it is already overrated. Believe me it won't be considered the masterpiece everyone thinks it is in about a month.

Remember when Fashion Week came out and some people would say "HOLY FUCK THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER", than not 2 days later all those posts died? The commotion will die. Section 80 and GKMC are both immensely better. Honestly I rather listen to Kendrication than To Pimp A Butterfly again.

i feel like the jazz/funk influences are there only because they are genres of music where black people have always been prominent and it fits his overall (boring and shit) album theme of "LOOK AT US BLACKS BEING BLACK HUH"

GKMC is objectively more accessible because it had records that related to all listeners of hiphop, from casual, to radio heads, to hypebeasts and to Patricians.

This album isn't bad it's just less accessible on a wider scale that's literally it. If you can relate, tolerate Funk/Jazz or understand even a semblance of black culture, then you had a good time with this album. That's it m8

It's immaculately produced. That being said, I personally like the aesthetic of GKMC way more. I like the use of modern hip-hop banger tropes (808s and ridiculous synths) in contrast with poingant lyrics and the evolving narrative of a growing-up Kendrick. TPaB is so well put together but does precisely what I have been annoyed with modern backpackers, which is doing the 90's throwback production boom-bap style with all "conscious" lyrics. That being said, Kendrick does it better than anyone has and despite fanboying GKMC, he has crafted a very impressive follow-up. It's also not my place at all to police his direction, especially considering his position (inb4 TUMBLRINA)

>It doesn't offer any of the imagination that GKMC did and lyrically it feels lazy

If there's one thing GKMC wasn't, it's 'imaginative' considering it was literally based on a biographical experience of Kendrick's life. Even if you mean imaginative as creatively forward-thinking, GKMC is just a typical Buldingsroman.

As for the "lyrically lazy" charge, I notice you keep comparing to stuff on GKMC, but this is a completely different side of lyrical. GKMC had thematic, narrative lyrics and this album is more geared toward abstract, poetry-esque lyrics. He literally reads a poem throughout the entire album. It's different because hip hop heads are always talking about "story raps," and while TPAB doesn't get rid of "story raps" or characters, it uses these devices for a broader aesthetic aim.

If you missed all this, then GKMC is still out there, you don't have to stop listening to it. But admit that TPAB is really not even comparable to GKMC; they're working toward different things.

Production is boringly regressive. Almost every track has some unnecessary choir, horn, or other jazz / soul cliche on it. It's almost like the producers made their tracks then Kendrick was like, "Okay, go back and add a bunch of shit." Flying Lotus should have been more prominent. Dude can honor the past while still being massively progressive.

Lyrics are on some Sociology 101 shit. His flow is nice, but he tries doing different styles and it just comes off as if he's grasping. I just want Kendrick to do Kendrick and not try to imitate an 'era' or style of black music.

The interview with Tupac at the end was cringe-worthy and basically summarizes everything I disliked about the album.

in this case the music on the album is honed so much to focus on lyrical prowess that it comes at the cost of having no really immediately memorable or catchy songs save for 'King Kunta', 'The Blacker the Berry' and the single version of 'i' due to the lack of conventional song structure

it doesn't make it bad just IMO it means that it's difficult to separate and digest/enjoy the individual songs on their own, especially if you're not a hip-hop fan

I get that it deals with transformation, guilt, depression, among other things, but I'm not sure I fully grasp the theme that brings it all together.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

essentially yes, a lack of "bangers"

but there are plenty of great tracks on it i.e. Institutionalized, These Walls, and How Much a Dollar Cost, the production is still immaculate and the lyrics are still rather thought-provoking, so it's still excellent just idk if GKMC > TPAB or TPAB > GKMC

If you're a middle class white dude than you're probably not gonna like the album cause it wasn't set out to make bangers.

It's simply thought provoking music. The shit that you'll have to listen to multiple times to understand. Then again you'll be even better if you understood black culture/struggles some more too.

And the beats are jazzy because from my understanding it's supposed to combine all forms of black music, like jazz. Because, after all, this album is black centered and catering to blacks because that's the demographic it's aimed towards.

That's just the way I see it....

I think you're completing over-estimating how thought provoking this shit is. There's no new ideology being represented.

>black centered and catering to blacks

ayy lmao, it's catered towards "conscious" whites, a bunch of cornballs who take cultural marxist stances as a way to promote their own "tolerance". In the end, they're ego-driven and easy to cater to.

I mean, I'm sure there are a ton of blacks who fancy themselves intellectual that will eat this shit up as well since it caters towards the ideology they eat up without thinking. A bunch of college-educated people who got scholarships because of the color of their skin and still cry about privilege.

And, I like this, but it isn't deep or thought-provoking.
