I recorded and released my first song yesterday. I'm really self-concious and don't want people that I know to hear my music, so I put it on youtube and soundcloud under a pseudonym.

I know exactly how you feel, though. I haven't spent a lot of money on my setup. I just have a guitar that my sister gave me years ago, use my phone to record, and I'm gonna do drums and stuff via software on my computer.

I figure if I get good and take off at it, I'll get more equipment and start releasing things under my real name.

By reading the full question this is obviously a joke.

But I'll answer anyway.

Making music is something that you should do purely for fun and for yourself. Don't expect anything to come from it and you're set. Also if you aren't sure, go and get something cheap or free to start with and then upgrade after 3+ months. I can't tell you the amount of people I know who pick up an instrument/program and then drop it after getting bored within a few weeks.

Music is expensive if you're gonna get serious too, but don't think about that for now, just think about it like a hobby.

I do it as therapy and a hobby as well, it can be rewarding, but only if you actually have a passion for it. Forcing yourself to make music if it's not your thing isn't rewarding.

You do need a space ship to create music. I'm currently making stuff using only a bass. Just try to make the most of what you have until something clicks.
