Shitty movie its still shitty
As a movie, its ok.
As movie about jazz, it is shit.
Any professor who acts like this, no matter his reputation or whether or not he/she has tenure, he/she would be fired.
Slapping a student is assault, throwing a chair at a student is not "artistic". I had a percussion professor who was terrifying and he hit students when they were stupid, but he never hit them hard enough to hurt them, he rarely swore, and he would help his students in every way he could. His intimidation came from his stare, reputation and the way he talked. Still a fantastic musician and person.
I was in a car accident on my way to a gig once, first thing I did was made sure my two saxes and flute were ok, they were, then I got to the hospital. I didn't go to the gig, that was a stupid point in the movie.
Not even getting into how he "practiced" or his views on Charlie Parker and Papa Jo Jones.
