So obviously Ariel Pink and Bob Pollard (of Guided by Voices) are the two greatest songwriters of our generation.

The question is, who is #1?

>> No.54017217

I've tallied up that Ariel Pink has written 68 good/great songs.

I've tallied up that Robert Pollard has written 68 good/great songs since around the end of 2012, alone.

ariel pink began when robert pollard was accepting his status as a music wizard and a place in the outsider pop hall of fame, so probably neither since the question is irrelevant and they both occurred during different generations.

This notion is evidenced by pinks pink hair, and pollards grey hair

Pollard has released more music from 2000 on then before it.

>>54017218

They've both released the majority of their music from 2000 on

To quote Robert Pollard

"For YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU"

>> No.54017340

I like Ariel Pink more but I acknowledge Robert Pollard is more influential and probably more important. But as for their abilities with releasing new music, I think Ariel has a better chance at releasing good music now than Robert.

I don't know about that. I think OP's arbitrary match-up is a blow out for Pollard, but Pink has been a big influence on chillwave and hypnagogic and you know, the hazy nostalgia sound so dominant in indie from the late 00s up to recently. GBV have their prominent fans -- The Strokes, Steven Soderbergh, Eddie Veddar -- but no real identifiable influence on those people's output. Joyce Manor is the biggest clear case of GBV influence I can think of at the moment.

But anyhow, Pollard is the greatest rock/pop songwriter of all time. Pink's talent is significant, but limited.

That's a good point. I'd say Ariel Pink is definitely more relevant and influential now, but I don't think there's anyone who could accurately trace Pollard's influence on music. I think people are more ambivalent to cite more "recent" artists like Ariel as influences, so I don't think we'll ever know until that point comes where people are more open to talking about it.
