>>53932268Would the film have same goodness if, say, it was about indie rock or sludge metal?
>>53932344>indie rock>drummingrofl
here you go OP>>53932344no, because there neither of those genres have the same kind of emphasis on musicianship and technicality that jazz does. it's easier to imagine a manipulative psychopath conductor/bandleader in a jazz setting than in a rock setting.
>>53932398and here's the complementary chart
>>53932374Not him but let's say wanky tech death instead of indie rock / sludge metal
>>53932409>>53932398Thanks buddy
>>53932419are there schools that teach wanky tech death?
>>53932419No, because Jazz is held in high regard. Culturally speaking nobody ever gave or will give a shit about tech death.
>>53932398That list is actually pretty good. Use it OP.
>>53932409The Brazilian list needs some Chico Buarque.

>>53932374could work if it was about early Dinosaur Jr. J Mascis was an asshole to the drummer because J was better than him

>>53932268on the heels of Whiplash, I'd say Buddy Rich - the Roar of 74oh and another thing - Whiplash is more documentary than fiction... almost every collegiate jazz band director is a complete and total asshole, using the flimsy justification of "that's how I get the best performances out of my musicians"...and as we used to say, "just because you're an asshole doesn't make you Buddy Rich".
>>53932268I recommend you to watch Sakamichi no Apolo
>>53932398>it's easier to imagine a manipulative psychopath conductor/bandleader in a jazz setting than in a rock setting.Captain Beefheart
>>53932268all the movie songs are pretty similar to ellington, listen to the afroeurasian eclipse
The other day, I was listening to pic related and I think it's the jazz record I liked the most so far.Can you recommand me something similar?I'm just a caveman, so I don't care too much about music complexity, I'd just like to hear similar atmospheres, a similar production and also the same kind of rough rhythmic section.
God damn, Whiplash is so fucking great. Blew me away.Anyways, check out some Thelonious Monk. His thing was he used a lot of intervals and dissonant chords in his piano playing but its pretty impressive if you can get past the abrasiveness of it.
>>53934311just listen to other mingus recordings, most of them are very similiar.
>>53934311That album is just new takes on Mingus songs from other albums.Listen to Mingus discography.
>>53932292Huh. This sounds surprisingly modern. Thought Duke was older. I'm a jazz baby fucking w/ Miles and Mingus and this is real good. Gonna check out more of him on the essentials chart. Thanks for the share.
>>53934607i recommended above to start with the afroeurasian eclipse to anyone wanting to get into ellington, I find it's good and entry-level as fuck as far as big band goeshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_W0a_wPSgM
>>53932268I made this track, hope you like. Grindcore + Jazz.>>53930000#p53934592
