Pet Sounds is much better than this. More sophisticated harmonies, more interesting lyrics/topics...it doesn't have Indian influence but does it need it?

If you disagree, explain why please.

>> No.53864798

Well, it's all subjective. Also, it doesn't necessarily follow from more sophisticated harmonies or more interesting lyrics that an album 'better'; there are more elements to music than harmony and lyrics. Regardless, the idea that we should even invest our energy in attempting to rank such subjective things is silly, imo.

I don't think one is better than the other. They're both singular masterpieces, and I think it would be more worthwhile if we would just enjoy albums such as these, in all of their glory, without recourse to some arbitrary artistic hierarchy; we should be beyond this by now.

Well Pet Sounds is much better than literally any other pop album ever made so you shouldn't even compare it with anything.

Sgt Pepper is really good though and better than SMiLE and any other beach boys related project except Pet Sounds imo.

>> No.53864993

Brian Wilson would disagree seeing as how he destroyed half his new album after listening to it. I personally think Pet Sounds was better, but mostly for Brian's stellar and visionary production. I can easily see how someone would prefer Peppers if it's more their speed.

Hard to compare the two on a musical level tho, the harmonies are a lot different and Pet Sounds is a lot more instrumentally diverse

what the hell are you talking about??? this never happened. I mean it did, but sgt pepper had nothing to do with it.

Look it up man... He listened to Sgt. Peppers, thought it was a masterpiece that he could never top. That's why he destroyed the records, and he was tripping hard at the time

The only thing that may resemble what your saying is his reaction after hearing "strawberry fields forever" for the first time where he said that they've reached the sound he desired. He didn't destroy half of SMiLE because he listened to Sgt Pepper, that's just misinformed information.

Fucking look it up, I'm not doing more research for you, there's like 40 other sources that will say the exact same thing.

Also you clearly haven't seen Brian's more recent interviews because he admitted vocally that it was the sole reason he destroyed the records

Pet Sounds is nice but it has the emotional range of a depressed teenage boy. Which probably explains its appeal the the average /mu/ser

Brian said strawberry fields was "good, a bit weird", but that was 2 years ago.

Also, saying that The Beatles were the sole cause of his breakdown is just wrong. You have to factor in pressure from bandmates, record company and the public for no longer being 'cool', obscene drug use, mental illness and a shitty work ethic.

>this damage control
I didn't say it was the sole reason for it even one time. BRIAN said that in one interview, not me. I think the pressure, drugs, and that six month period it took him to produce good vibrations just drove him nuts, then he heard the record and snapped. Can you at least admit you were wrong for your first statement that his breakdown had nothing to do with sgt Pepper?

didn't he famously hide in a room and break down when mccartney came to visit him.

on topic, i don't know what it is but although pet sounds is technically superior the beatles just had better songs. melodies from the BB always had this vibe that limited their success imo.

I'm not gonna go dig up the interview because I don't remember the name of it and I don't feel compelled to do it for such an incompetent internet user? Like what the fuck do you want from me, MLA format? If you had a decent sized brain in your head you would've found all of those from a 39 second google search for the EXACT WORDS I TOLD YOU

>> No.53867472

>>53867362
Not him, but you're wrong. I'm on mobile so I can't source much but I've watched multiple documentaries and read a biography of Brian. Sgt. Pepper's came out after he shelved Smile. It had no influence on his decision to give up on it and it was by no means what caused his emotional breakdown.

Your sources are all bogus and likely just spread the same rumor in a big circle of misinformation. Sorry.

>> No.53867520

>>53866296
Brian has never said a single word about Strawberry Fields breaking him down, just that he had to pull over his car. He also pulled over his car when he heard Be My Baby for the first time. It doesn't mean anything. The whole 'Strawberry Fields helped kill Smile' was something that writers inferred years after the fact when Brian's passenger in the car reported that had allegedly said (paraphrasing) 'the Beatles got to what I was doing with Smile before I could release it'.

>> No.53867521

nothing there say that brian destroyed smile because of sgt. pepper.

>I'm not gonna go dig up the interview because I don't remember the name of it and I don't feel compelled to do it for such an incompetent internet user?
so why even name it in the first place? that interview doesn't exist for all I know.

And i've searched google and wikipedia with the exact words you said and no source was valid. Also with my knowledge of watching Smile documentaries and brian interviews and just reading a lot about the topic I know that you're wrong.

It's just hilarious when people say information without providing any sources and just get angry about them being wrong about said information.

> his breakdown had nothing to do with sgt Pepper

This is correct. He began experiencing hallucinations brought on by LSD in early 1965. By the end of the year, he was working on his 12th album at the age of 22, only 3/4 through a 7-year contract he signed with Capitol at the age of 19.

The Beatles were 3 songwriters. The Beach Boys were 1. Brian was not only the producer, arranger, songwriter, and band leader, but also the bread winner. You're a faggot if you think Sgt. Pepper was the worst of his problems.

>> No.53867975

Brian probably had the talent to be as good as the Beatles if he could get himself together. It's a shame The Beach Boys only released two albums on Sgt Peppers level.

>> No.53868148
