This is objectively untrue; he is generally regarded as one of the top 5 greatest of all time. The only place I have ever heard Jay-Z's place in hip-hop history questioned is on /mu/.

Jay-Z is the dullest, saddest excuse for a rapper I've ever heard. Nothing he says is clever, funny, interesting, or stimulating.
>hurr 99 problems but a bitch ain't one
Laughable. Even his supposedly honest "Moment of Clarity" contains nothing but thinly veiled self-glorification. Then again, there are other shitty rappers with nothing to say and no good way of saying it, but at the very least they can usually mirror their environment through their stupidity. Jay-Z manages to avoid even that, mirroring nothing but MTV pop culture.

That's not what we're talking about though, is it? We're talking about Jay accusing Nas of being 2deep4u when he's not.

Besides, the beef came from Jay always resenting Nas for not turning up to record when he was invited, and then tactically striking when Esco's career was on the downswing.

The difference is that Jay-Z makes tracks that are carried solely by nicked lines. Dropping a line here and there to show appreciation is one thing. What Big L does on Ebonics with Nas' "Speak with criminal slang / ... / Vocabulary spills I'm ill," that's reverential. Making "99 Problems" the selling point of your entire track is biting.

Honestly Reasonable Doubt didn't age as well as other classics from that time like Cuban Linx. There's some very corny moments and he doesn't really have any personality on there either.
