Can one of you big Kanye fans tell me who is this Vic Mensa kid?

Is he one of those nameless Kanye "proteges" who are going to disappear after doing only one track with him? (I'm talking about Dwele, Cyhi, T-Pain, etc... Anyone still remembers any of those people? What did they do significant besides one song with Kanye?)

It seems like Kanye tends to pick only artists who are active/really prominent and/or big at the time to collaborate on his albums, and not artists who will actually stand the test of time. He even had Lil Wayne, Chief Keef and Adam Levine on his tracks which just proves my claim.

He's the complete opposite of Drake, he doesn't seem to want to promote new artists and propel them to fame, he just uses them for a track, once they're at the height of their popularity, and then forgets about them. The only artist who managed to stand the test of time and still manages to release relevant stuff was the dude from Bon Iver, but that's mostly because he was a well established artist way before Kanye discovered him, and not just a huge one-hit-wonder/meme at a time.

So, who is this kid? Is Vic Mensa a big figure in some underground scene I'm not familiar with or what? Is he going to disappear and fade into irrelevance in a few years? Or maybe as soon as the hype behind Wolves and this new album dies down?

Mensa is one of the current rising acts in the Chicago hiphop scene. He's best buds with Chance the Rapper. He used to be the emcee for a band called Kids These Days (who only put out one album called Traphouse Rock... it wasn't very good). KTD broke up several years ago so Vic has been solo since then. Pitchfork gave his latest mixtape a bnm I think. His relation to kanye is probably just based on being from Chicago.

are you asking a legitimate question where you don't know the answer or are you looking to be convinced on what to think? The body of your post came off as an attack on Kanye. If that's what you're intention was then using Vic Mensa was unnecessary support. As anon said he's a rapper based in Chicago which is probably the primary reason for his ties to Kanye.

I'd suggest downloading Innanetape. I personally enjoyed listening to it and if you're curiosity is genuine, checking his resume is a practical next step.

It's the other way around.

Drake takes complete nobodies, jumps on a remix, signs them to his label and/or gives them a shoutout (Father), and makes them famous.

No one knew who The Weeknd, Majid Jordan, Sampha, PartyNextDoor or iLoveMakonnen were before Drake introduced them.

Meanwhile Kanye always wants someone who's HUGE at the time he's recording a new album. Someone who's a one-hit-wonder and is going to disappear soon. It's like he wants them because of their popularity and because they have one meme song and not because they are good.

Late Regustration
>Adam Levine (his shitty band had one big song in that year and that's why Kanye wanted him on a track) -- now a complete nobody
>Jamie Foxx (is this guy known for anything else besides the Gold Digger song? Kanye only wanted him because he won an Oscar that year) -- now a complete nobody
>The Game (because gangsta rap/Compton shit revival at that time) -- now a complete nobody
and others

Graduation
>T-Pain (because he was famous at that time for inventing the auto-tune meme) -- now a complete nobody
>Dwele (because Kanye heard him on Common's song and he wanted him for himself) -- now a complete nobody
and others

808s
>Lil Wayne (only because he was the biggest rapper at that time) -- now a complete nobody and is about to lose all his money because of Birdman
and others

>MBDTF
>Kid Cudi (big at the time) -- now a complete nobody
>Swizz Beatz (only for being a known producer around the late aughts) -- now a complete nobody
>CyHi -- now a complete nobody
and others

>Yeezus
>Chief Keef (had one meme song, Kanye instantly said to himself "Shit, this kid is so famous, I need him on my album!") -- now a complete nobody, homeless, kicked out of his label, etc
and others

Also it's worth noting that Jay-Z is on many of his tracks, only because people say Jay-Z is the greatest rapper of all time and Ye looks for validation from him.

To be fair his voice was clearly fucked that day. Hence why he didn't perform his verse on Wolves. But yeah he's not an amazing live singer

He's more of a rapper than a singer though unfortunately. I've been a fan for a minute and I honestly never knew his voice was so fucking amazing. I mean he may not be able to hit every single high and low octave but his sound is fucking mesmerising...

I love Pusha but his verse felt a bit corny. Same with Pharrel's. He tried too hard. Future was good and Casino forgettable. I think that track had more potential.

What?

How the hell is Partynextdoor an R&B singer? He is more of a rapper than anything. Did you listen to West District? Most of his stuff is organized just like a rap song. His mixtape is more rap-ish than sing-ish. Most of his songs (verse, hook, verse, hook) he records a verse & do ablibs to them (like every rapper). He might stack/ harmonize his chorus sometimes but most rappers do that anyway. Vic Mensa is exactly like that.

Down On My Luck is a masterpiece, please listen to it before judging the artist.

If you haven't listened INNANETAPE then do it now, don't sleep on it.

And Vic is a pretty cool guy in person, very down to earth and has a cool personality. He used to be in a band Kids These Days, but he went solo since 2013, he was also on Chance the Rapper's mixtape. He can do anything, from rapping to singing, and his lyrics are pretty good, they are kind of reminiscent of Kid Cudi, Chance and Drake.

Down On My Luck is hardly a masterpiece. Its just a very good club/party tune.
That being said I love his music, I just don't think Down On My Luck is his best work. I prefer Orange Soda or Holy Holy
